Watercolor offers a lovely transparency that you can’t get with any other medium. You can create delicate and soft variegation effects with layering of colors to achieve depth and dimension so easily with just a few tricks. in this video I'm gonna be showing you all of my favourite greens and how I use them to make beautiful botanical foliage.
In this months Watercolor subscription you should have a set of gorgeous watercolors created by hand to paint lovely Lilacs and leaves and I’m going to show you how to make sure that angelic transparency shines through to give a luminous quality to the artwork.

Tips and techniques:
Use a light wash of watercolor to gentle brush down the petals of the poppies, leaving some areas lighter to create a sense of transparency.
Add layers of color to build up the intensity and depth, allowing some of the layers to show through to create a translucent effect.
Use a fine brush to add details such as the veins in the leaves and the delicate stems.
Consider adding a background wash to enhance the contrast and make the botanical subject stand out. I love flicking splatter and mashing it up to get a muted background.

😍. Started watching as I get ready to do some mixing, mulling & painting. My best friend had received some of the new Rosa’s granulating paints, made a pan of the azure green for herself, gave me the tube and said “go do your magic..I need some more natural, warmer greens”. It’s a dark green-blue, very cool. Adding some ochre, raw sienna or quin gold gave her the very granulating, more natural greens she wanted. I think, like Cascade Green, the azure alone will be perfect for winter forests, Christmas trees, other evergreen mountains in the distance. My goal today? You are SO lucky to be in Ca. 😂 (My girls are trying to move me up to Niagara/Tonawanda, North of Buffalo…all I care is if there’s an art store just over the border so I don’t have to pay some of the ridiculous postage..Rockwell? $28 FOR SHIPPING?!? 🤯) Anyways, last week, when I got the notification for Charm 3 and saw their mix called “Blue Iris”? I’m obsessed. 😂. Last weekend I tried 5-6 different combos of PV23, PV19 & PB36. Obviously, the issue is not knowing WHICH PV19 & PB36 they used. I ordered some more tubes..get them today and can’t wait to put my lab coat on and start playing. I have to mull some more of my “hummingbird wings gray” for a friend..(PB35 & PR233), AND I just got some more PB33 to make some greens with. But my main goal is to figure out how to get that Blue Iris mix…I can’t get the blue to precipitate as much as theirs does. I ordered a more granulating PB36… I might even try my PB33 in it since I usually have some leftover. Unsure why I’m so obsessed with this mix…😂 maybe it’s just the challenge. 🤷🏼‍♀️
