Btw, the actress playing Polly is Connie Booth. You've seen her before; she played the "witch" in "Holy Grail". She also co-wrote the show with Cleese, and was newly divorced from him when they started the show (they had been married from 1968 up to the early seventies).

Basil Fawlty is based on this hotel proprietor that John Cleese and the rest of the Pythons encountered when they stayed at his hotel when out on location filming outdoor film segments for "Monty Python's Flying Circus". Cleese said the guy was exactly like Basil in terms of the pompous disregard showed with hotel guests.

And few people probably know the 1983 movie "Yellowbeard", a pirate spoof by Graham Chapman, Peter Cook, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Marty Feldman, etc 🙂 Quite funny, but technically not a Monty Python movie.

Finally someone who reacts to this gem the way it deserves. Keep an eye on the hotel sign in the following episodes. If you can find a way to watch the Monty Python's Flying Circus, the original Monty Python tv series, I think you'd really enjoy it. It's only John Cleese and Connie Booth (the waitress) who have a connection to Monty Python in this show (as far as I remember). Connie played the witch who weighed the same as a duck in The Holy Grail. Connie and John were married for a while in real life.

This episode was filmed several months before the rest of series one. During production of the remaining episodes, they had to re-shoot part of the scene with Polly and Mr Brown in the dining room, bringing back actor Robin Ellis and a female extra to do so. Originally Polly was studying psychology but they decided that she'd be more relatable as an art student.

70's era Brit TV mostly was introduced to USA viewers via PBS. I have yet to see "Good Neighbors" or "The Good Life" series reacted to. A suburban couple change to self sufficiency. (farming and raising animals at home) Another very funny series is: "Are You Being Served?" about a department store company. What is nice about seeing these shows today, if you have any questions, you can look it up and find out right away online.

Fawlty Towers is a British sitcom television series from the 1970s, created by John Cleese and his then wife Connie Booth (--> Polly). It is one of the classics of Britcom, reached number 1 in the BFI TV 100 and is regularly repeated due to its great popularity. All the actors are great, but John Cleese is a comedy legend, which he has proven countless times as a member of the world-famous comedy troupe MONTY PYTHON. In April 2019, the Guardian wrote the following: >> Fawlty Towers has been named the greatest ever British TV sitcom once again by a panel of comedy experts compiled by the Radio Times.

Fun fact:- John Cleese was married to Connie Booth (Polly the waitress) when they made this show. Connie was one of the writers along with John Cleese & Prunella Scales (Sybil Fawlty) & others. Connie Booth is actually American. She also played the witch with the parsnip on her nose in The Holy Grail Andrew Sachs (Manuel) was brilliant at playing the Spanish waiter. I love the way Basil accuses the couple driving away of being snobs when he is the biggest snob & treats the cockney CID officer with such disrespect just because of his accent.

In 1970, the Monty Python team was staying at the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay. The character of Basil Fawlty is based on the snobbish eccentric owner of the Gleneagles Hotel, Donald Sinclair. Apparently, he was very rude and treated all the guests like he wished they weren't there and were keeping him from running the hotel properly. And he especially didn't like the Monty Python members. As a matter of fact, small spoiler, there's an episode with a briefcase, that actually happened with Donald and Eric Idle's briefcase 😂😂😂 His reasoning for his actions were "we have been having staffing problems. "

I'd also recommend "Ripping Yarns", with Michael Palin and Terry Jones, which is a series of standalone tales. Do "Tomkinson's Schooldays" if you do no other. Michael Palin also did a series "Around the World in 80 Days", where he attempted to trace Phileas Fogg's route (more or less) in the same amount of time. It's not a comedy, but has funny moments, as well as Palin's fine narration. Eric Idle also did a film "The Rutles" which was a spoof of The Beatles, made with Neil Innes, who was Eric's lead minstrel in Holy Grail.
