That's another myth that's bandied around. American's definitely love sarcasm. American sarcasm can be so dry (drier the better IMHO). Look at comedians like Louse C Clark where the whole standup can be one long sarcastic joke. And George Carlin also loved sarcasm. It's often more telegraphed, but not always. Even Bill Burr slips in the odd sarcastic joke now and then, e.g. "Why lie in on a Sunday when we can pay $50 for eggs. Now you're thinking!"

Harry Enfield (the angry husband/narrator) first came to fame in the 1980s doing a couple of stand-up characters - a kebab shop owner called Stavros and Loadsamoney, a plasterer who boasted about how much money he had. The routines were co-written by Paul Whitehouse who was the other speaking party guest in the first sketch. The BBC then commissioned a sketch series called Harry Enfield's Television Programme which is where these clips come from. After two series it was renamed Harry Enfield and Chums to recognise the contributions of Whitehouse and Kathy Burke who both played various characters alongside Enfield. Paul Whitehouse went on to do The Fast Show (also for the BBC) and Enfield and Burke made a film, Kevin and Perry Go Large, based on characters they'd played in the show. In 2000 Enfield made Harry Enfield's Brand Spanking New Show for Sky. This featured all-new characters and Paul Whitehouse and Kathy Burke did not appear. In 2007, Enfield and Whitehouse reunited for four series of Ruddy Hell! It's Harry and Paul (later just Harry and Paul) for the BBC. There's loads of other stuff but this comment is long enough as it is!

The significance of LoadsaMoney to Harry Enfield was that in spite of it being a clear caricature, it was widely adopted by the city traders of London that he was satirising. Almost overnight, the traders abandoned their Amex Black cards in favour of wads of £50 notes. They would acknowledge each other over their pints of Dom Perignon or Crystal by waving the wads and bawling out "Loadsamoney" at the same time. Harry was appalled when he discovered it. This sketch was clearly driven in part by that, it is so absurd, that nobody could take it seriously... he hoped!

'Are You Being Served' ?? They haven't watched that. All they ever know is 'Monty Python' or 'Fawlty Towers'. I'm sure Mrs. Slocombe's pussy would get many laughs in the US. It's because of Monty Python and shit like Downton Abbey that Americans think every person from England speaks like a toff and why they cannot decipher a Cockney, Scouse, Geordie, Brummie or any other of the many regional accents of England.

I was laughing at your reactions. Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse(Gent on the right)are comedic geniuses and British Legends. This show and The Fast Show would be what I stayed up to watch as a young teenager in the 90's. They formed one of the best duo's to date. I could list a hundred sketches from either show that would tickle you but I hope you have time to delve into more of the comedy they produced. I hope you see that British comedy is quite different and we will take the mickey out of ourselves and our history just as much as we will anybody else. Amsterdam Police are some of their best acts together. I am now 41 and this genre of comedy will always have a place in my heart. I hope you enjoy more!

British comedies main ingredient is probably irony but it contains a heady mix of all the usual comedy staples and can be anything from highbrow to farce. The best skits often combine few elements together to create a n unpredictable taste test challenge in humour. You either love it or just don't get it. Harry Enfield (shown here) has a lot of great skits and another two in the same vein as these is "Women, keep your virtue" and "the Conjugal rights guide"," both hilarious.

Well, my grandmother got on a motorbike and rode it semi-successfully in 1926 when she was 44, and in 1939 she bought an Austin 10 and, after a brief tuition, set off on a solo drive from Suffolk to Cornwall. A very nice little trip of nearly 400 miles with no incident whatsoever. Also a nice little detour to Stonehenge, which she had always wanted to visit. Even my Uncle, a mechanic and a former racer at Woodlands said that she was quite a competent little - at five-foot-nothing - driver. She also kept the family together during the thirties and forties and ran her own business from 1930 to 1963 when she sadly passed on when I was far too young to know her better. Wretched cancer.

Before Monty Python John Cleese was in "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again" on the radio. This was equally zany and well worth a listen. This was preceded in the 1950s by "The Goon Show" with Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Seacombe. This is a must listen if you want to hear the origins of British zany humour. Both are on KZbin. Both are extremely funny.

The dinner party sketch is an absolute classic, One of a series of "women: know your limits" sketches from Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse. I'm so glad you took it in the spirit of parody that was intended. Something today's woke censorious world would no doubt condemn. If you have teenage kids, it's worth checking out the "Kevin's Birthday" sketch from Harry Enfield - another classic to which anyone who has had teenage kids can relate.

"Harry Enfield and chums" (circa 1998), if my memory serves me correctly... His main friend, Paul Whitehouse (who was featured there), went on to do "The Fast Show"

Bit late to this comment section, but you really need to do more Harry Enfield. The "Gay son" skits are hilarious. Harry plays a father who can't handle his son being gay. Brilliant.

As an Englishman who grew up watching the golden era of British comedy in the 70's, 80's and early 90's I have such a deep appreciation for how open it was, how subtle it was, and most importantly how unabashed it was. Classic comedy is the only TV I watch. We British have such a unique delivery and nuance in our classic comedy. Glad to see some American cousins taking time to engage with what we consider one of our greatest assets. I may be mistaken, but the lady who played the woman trying to drive the car was Helen Mirren.

You are indeed mistaken :-) The woman driving the car is Carla Mendonça. She was in quite a few of the other quality British comedies, including the Young Ones, Alas Smith & Jones, French & Saunders, Bottom...

Harry Enfield had numerous comedy sketch shows brilliantly backed up by Paul Whitehouse and others, check out the “ Slobs” for example. Unfortunately the ultra woke BBC of today no longer allows proper comedy on its channel, everything has to be politically correct and therefore not funny. The days of “ Only Fools and Horses” ( The absolute best) are long gone, I don’t watch any of it.

We have been so lucky with the regular comedy we used to have on each weekday evening between 7.30 and 8.00. That has all generally finished now, and we have a few modern day attempts at comedy, which is usually just peppered with foul language. The best of British comedy:- Only Fools and Horses, The Morcombe and Wise Show. The Two Ronnies, are generally acknowledged as the best selection through about 15-20 years. The Rise and Fall of Reggie Perin was a great classic from the late 70’s Fawlty Towers, from the mid 70’s. Open All Hours, another classic, which has had a recent revival:- Still Open All Hours. Coupling was something from the early part of the new century along with Men Behaving Badly. That’s a pretty good selection that should keep you amused for a few weeks. There are loads of others, but these I believe are the best. I hope you enjoy looking through them. P.S. I continue to enjoy The Big Bang Theory.
