There is a noticeable class difference between Basil and Sybil. Sybil is from a more working class background where as Basil was from a more bourgeois, middle class bakckground and so there is a stark contrast between types of people they feel comfortable around. This was filmed in the '70s where class deferance hadn't yet disappeared in Britain. Middle classes still aspired to social climb to the upper class and Working classes still felt most comfortable sticking to their own hence it's actually a wonderful portrait of society at the time.

Basil Fawlty always liked to think he was posher than he was and loved to suck up to the upper class in society to make believe he was the same which is why he liked those people visiting his hotel-you see this dynamic in other episodes

The Tony Hancock character of Railway Cuttings East Cheam was similar but with a great twist🤔 If he was in conflict with a working class person,he would be all snobby and talk down to them but when he was in conflict with an upper class or posh speaking person,he would be all working class and proud and then mock their posh accent😆

I've always desperately wanted to devour that trifle at the end. Watch the Basil Fawlty Specsavers advert if it's on KZbin. It's kind of a re-enactment of the breakdown scene in this, with John Cleese himself.

I vaguely recall the 70s, I was a child then, so obviously mainly I recall stuff like toys, sweets and movies, but there really was this obsession with class deference and hierarchy, how you dressed and what class you projected got you different levels of service regardless of money paid, there were places you couldn’t even get into if you were too low class. It still hasn’t entirely gone, btw.

As far as Basil's concerned working class guests should expect service like they're in an old-fashioned holiday camp where there's very little choice and activities are practically mandatory. 30:59 I'd say go for the longer version; that way you're more likely to see it in its original format without the PC censorship.
