Marco's Devil Fruit is one of the rarest type. There's only a handful that allow fight which basically negates one of the main threats to DF users, falling into water. I think Pell from Alabasta is the only other one we've seen that can fly.

Crocodile can fly across water, implied in this arc when the ship falls into the sea, Crocodile is the only DF user not shown falling into the sea. Ace flew across water in Alabasta, when he took out BW ships. Judging by these examples, it is likely Smoker can too, same for logias based on energy or lighter elements.

People like to pretend magma fruit is stronger than fire fruit, or ice fruit is stronger than snow fruit. Truth is, magma/ice boast higher destructive dmg, while fire/snow have much better mobility and flight, so I personally see them as trade-offs.
