Much of the old fleet in Petersburg, Alaska were similarly powered. My grandfather's boat had a Corliss one-lunger which was eventually replaced by a four cylinder direct-reversible Atlas. Low RPMs (600 maximum) with all kinds of torque from the massive flywheel. The hull was very similar to this old beauty, especially in that gorgeous fantail stern.

The earliest models of boats with this engine did not have reverse, instead they reversed the motor's direction of rotation by skipping an ignition with an evacuation valve on the cylinder. Quite awkward in narrow passages and when mooring the boat in port. 🙂

Underbart, minns när jag hörde detta som liten palt hos min mormor på Resö i norra bohuslän i slutet -60- början på 70-talet då de fortfarande fungerade i kommersiellt fiske. Härligt ljud, härliga minnen! :)

My Grandmother told us about her Father & his Father. both came to Mobile From Germany. & They both Built each of them a Commercial Boat & were commercial Boats for the city of Mobile River area. They pulled Cyprus logs down to the Cyprus Mill in Hog Bayou where they keep their Boats. & That Both Boats Had a one Cyl. Put Put motor they Hand Cranked by spining the flywheel. This was in late 1800s & early 1900s Would give anything if we had just one Photo

Was this boat ever named FAKSEN?? If so, I have pictures of her in 1955 at Bodo harbor. The picture shows the front of the wheelhouse from the name down. It sure looks like the same boat with running lights on either side of the name..

Why does the motor runs so noisy? Is there something that you can do to mitigate that noise? That ship is amazing, but traveling in it would be a bit uncomfortable, I think , isn't it?

This is a slow-running engine perfectly mated to a large variable pitch propeller. The exhaust note could be changed if you had a large bore diameter exhaust & a long pipe run. I would venture the opinion that the boat is running at rather high revs and wouldn't run a lot faster on whatever fishing method the boat was made for. The large prop would mean the boat could creep along at idle quite easily.

It was built in 1916 it's part of the charm, its important to keep it the way it is in order to preserve our coastal history and the journey we've taken the last 105 years, so the sound is a relic of our past.
