..been there.. Good job! Sad you had to back up & pull the cams again. 'Summit Racing' has been my "go to" store (..& now "online") forever practically. "You have the power!"...
Setting the dials reminds me of taking pictures of my 7m build. Clicking through the pictures makes the progress look easy. But what happened behind the scenes was several hours of painstaking work.

Great video! I imagine it is easier to degree cams with a belt drive, i have only degreed cams on engines with timing chains. The PITA with chains is chain slop, so you have to only turn the crank clockwise. Can't go forward/backwards like you can with a belt. The way i do it: 1. Find TDC with piston stop on cyl #1, rotating engine clockwise until piston hits the stop, record number. Rotate engine counterclockwise until piston hits the stop, record number. Then position the degree wheel so that the numbers are the same in both directions. This should be TDC, verify. 2. Set up dial indicator on intake valve spring retainer cyl #1. Rotate engine until max lift is reached, zero the indicator. Then record the #s for .050" before, and .050" after max lift (just like you did) add the #s together and divide by 2, this should be your cam centerline. Repeat for exhaust cam(s) I can appreciate how long it takes to properly set up the dial indicator(s), making sure the angle is correct, otherwise the readings will be off. All of this work will be well worth it to get the engine operating at max efficiency. Having adjustable can gears will make it easy to make any adjustments, you'll get it dialed in for sure!

I remember doing that decades ago with the original Minis. In the absence of affordable tuning following engine mods, what made practical sense was homebrew blueprinting on the 1275 engine. It was swapped in place of an 850cc, pulled out of an Austin America, as was the fashion. Starting with selective assembly and then with filing and stuffing in bits of feeler gauge, I ended up with the cam timed in to within half a degree of the spec. It was immensely satisfying since the factory tolerance was something like plus or minus 8!

I just degreed my B18C cams foe rh3 first time a couple weeks ago, one of my freind's dad showed me w trick that saves a lot of time and is still accurate enough. Set up the degree wheel as normal, find your max lift degrees on the cam card, turn the crank to that point (98° and 105° on my case) then loosen you adjistsble cam gears and turn the actual cam until you hit the highest lift on your dial indicator, tighten the cam gear and done. I did it both ways the first time and ended up in the exact same place, when I put my sleeved ramey block in over the winter i'll just use the cheat method

Hey faye, the struggle is real, I spent 2 years trying to make a set of bc264 cams in my 7m, degreed them in countless times but never got anything to match the cam card. Duration was less, lift was left, centre line was not in the middle of duration... did the best I could but the engine ran terribly, 8inch hg of vaccum at idle. Swapped back to factory cams and it works like it should. Hope you dont end up down the same rabbit hole I did.

I need your help on this issue I have. I put my 7mgte at TDC all three marks on crank and both camshaft gears. Now the issue I have is a high rev and a slight misfire. Timing light is irratic with no rhythm. TDC mark on crank does not match with timing light. The question I have, is it possible to be 180 degrees out even with all 3 TDC matching? Could it be my CPS is 180° off?
@1320_ikimasho9 ай бұрын
Was it pure chance that your pointer just happened to be in range of pointing at 0/TDC on the cam wheel, or did you do something before that to make it work out like that?
@jarcadipane28498 ай бұрын
Is there NOT an issue turning the motor backward ? Shouldn't you only turn the motor forward in order to determine TDC properly ?

Is this to verify your timing or to make sure your new parts are properly installed or both
@swicked862 жыл бұрын
It's too validate cam timing, it has a large impact on where peak torque occurs. Advancing cam timing will lower the RPM for peak torque. I think Toyota was normally 110/110 on most of the G series engines I could be wrong. I've normally guessed Toyota was accurate in making cams so I'd only have to adjust the position when building a 7age.
@FayeHadley2 жыл бұрын
Verifying TDC was to make sure that I had the degree wheel set up properly. Verifying lobe center line was making sure that I degree the camshafts to the proper location per the manufacturer specifications. In this case the manufacturer is BC camshafts! You will see in my fall about video how I move the adjustable cam gears to the exact point of the desired center line per the cam card!!
