I love these old cop training videos. Reminds me of an era gone by back when cops were cops, criminals were criminals and you could tell the difference between the two. People had respect for each other too. Nowadays seems most everyone is a thug.

This was similar to the firearms training I received in 1968. We didn’t transition to semi autos until the mid ‘80s.

I like old training films. I dig the gun hand motion of sweeping back the jacket prior to the draw.

Once your hand is on the grip of the revolver, point your elbow at the target and pivot your revolver around that elbow until it points forward. And make sure you swipe your right leg with the muzzle at all times, during the draw.

It’s cool to see videos like this in my opinion. Besides the history these types of videos hold, we also see how things like firearms training for LE has changed over the years as well.

This technique with these types of revolvers was actually a faster way of getting shots on target.

Actually claimed to be. Not actually was. Ed McGivern proved that with slow motion about 20 years before they made this video. It was institutional stubborness in spite of the evidence that had them pridefully teaching this unaimed single handed fire. They claimed it was faster and more instinctual, but they ignored the performance tests which routinely showed that with any degree of training, using the sights and two hands got faster accurate hits. This is Plato vs Newton.

Nonsense. We now emphasize accuracy and using the sights. Those days the training doctrine was reflex, hip, or point shooting. It takes a lot of training to hit Anything that way, but even moderate practice with the sights will produce much better groups.

i wonder why law enforcement agencies opted for revolvers instead of the 1911 or browning hi power.
@7come11two

A number of factors. First of all, revolvers were being carried before the 1911 and BHP were introduced. Lots of officers were apprehensive about switching. They were familiar with the revolver and trusted its reliability. Also, some departments did not allow auto loaders, because they didn't trust their officers with that much fire power. I remember when the movie Robocop came out. It was futuristic and all the cops carried auto pistols. I thought it was corny, because at that time, most cops still carried revolvers, and I thought they would never adopt the auto pistol in large numbers. Not long after the movie came out, cops were carrying Glock 17s everywhere. Unfortunately, with the adoption of the Glock pistols, accidental shootings by, and mostly of, police officers skyrocketed. So, maybe the delay was well grounded.

they where 2 reasons 1) cost-most small agencys had 38s at the time 2) the 1911 was mostly to the military and at the time was very expensive to maintain train and purchase 3) dont forget this was the late 1950's early 1960's the 9mm was still kind of new and foriegn to most people at this time not many american guns mostly foriegn 9MMS where from our enemys most of the world especially Europe was still recovering from WW2 and korea and most cops in those days didnt trust a autoloader.

They never adopted either. FBI was still using mostly revolvers until the infamous 1986 shootout that led to sweeping changes in both the FBI and other law enforcement.
