He analyzed Real Madrid and found them to be way more dangerous in the second half (I think there's a statistic out there that mentions that almost 80% of their goals were scored in the second half last season) so instead of starting with Olmo which will definitely give Barça the upper hand offensively, he starts with Fermin, instructing him to apply pressure and roam around the field. This means that he saves his trump card (olmo) to be used later on so that Barcelona keeps the attacking rythm going in the second half until the game ends. He knows that the offside trap will definitely work vs RM because it is a team that relies heavily on long balls and counters thanks to the fast pace of its wingers. Also you mentioned that Mbappe should have stayed onside. It is easier said than done. I don't think Mbappe ever faced a team that plays a defensive line this high and for a player that relies on his pace to receive passes and create goalscoring opportunities, it is a direct counter to his style. One thing though, that could have helped him, was to instead go deep and help his team with the build up play, just like what Kane did vs Barcelona. The result of this game was clear from the start: the offside trap will swallow any team that relies on long passes and fast breaks, and Bayern & RM are no exception. Flick is a monster. If you really think about it, he is revolutionizing football since this offside trap with this very high line is something somewhat new to our modern football. And the crazy part, it hasn't evolved to its final form yet. We might be witnessing the birth of a dynasty if all the pieces align. Anyways, good video.
