I'd say the *best* old music is better than the best modern music, but the *bad* old music was much worse! Modern music is generally of pretty decent quality, IMO. But it's also completely homogenous; nothing stands out. Whereas, the best old music is timeless and still invokes strong emotions - even to young people who haven't heard it before.
