In this video I will be comparing three of my favorite strings sets from Thomastik Infeld: Peter Infeld also known as PI’s, Rondo’s and Dominant Pro’s.
There is no silver bullet and no set of strings will be perfect for all the players and instruments out there. For the purpose of this video I will use the same instrument for the sound samples. Please drop me a line with your impressions in the comments section bellow. If you find some useful information please like and share this video.
Peter Infeld or PI’s are bright, noble, complex sounding strings with a big projection. They deliver instant bow response and feel soft and nimble under the fingers.
Rondo’s are a bit of a special beast because for many years they were available to be purchased only for luthiers or dealers but these days you can order them from your favorite music shop. Before they launched the Dominant Pro’s I thought these are the new Dominants on steroids. I love these strings and honestly I’ve not seen a violin that sounded bad with them!
They have a great clarity, responsiveness, sizzle and power. The feel great under the fingers, soft, they almost disappear.
Dominant Pro’s are dark, focused, quite powerful, it’s a sound that fils the room. I’d encourage you to experiment with different E’s which will change the sound of the whole set. I did notice that these strings feels slightly harder under the finger compared to regular Dominants or other strings. That does not bothers me. I have couple reviews if you'd like to hear more about these strings.
Initial Review Dominant Pro: • Dominant Pro Thomastik...
Long Term Review Dominant Pro: • Dominant Pro TI Violin...
Many thanks to my friends at Connolly Music and Thomastik Infeld for their support!

I enjoy your videos! My daughter uses PI's on the Romanian violin she bought from your friend Nica. Soft on the fingers and a big, complex sound.

I also play on a Guarneri del Gesu copy violin. I play in a baroque orchestra at my university and I love the Rondo on my violin, I definitely want to try the dominant pro, I liked how they sound on your violin

The Peter Infeld strings were QUITE piercing [in the recording] in the high register around the 2:10 mark (and yes, it could be a sensitive microphone situation). The Rondo strings were a little more mellow overall but still had a bright and piercing E string! At 8:52- the Dominant Pros had SUCH an open/bellow-y/ringing sound without hurting my ears though the speakers. The E string in the Dominant Pro set seems to be "calm " in a sense. If you played a piece such as Ave Maria [Schubert] on just the E string then it would possibly be the most pleasant out of all the sets of strings used. In my opinion. I've just ordered a gold-plated E-string (Dominant Pro) and I hope it will have a little bit of a softer sound, as my violin "favours" the E string the most with any set. I haven't ordered any other Dominant Pro string alternatives (and yes, there are many, like Aluminium-wound D strings or Platinum E's and such) but I hope to play on all of them.

if you can compare the Evah Pirazzi and Dominant Pro. since both of this string set are design for power.

1. Bright 2. Thin 3. Shrill 😬 lovely violinist though... he'd sound great on anything. Dominant Pro was my favorite of these three.... although I prefer Larsen. different strokes for different folks....

Personally, I prefer dark and warm sound. So, I pick Dominant Pro. Are you using AU version on E string?

08:10 It's the opposite. Very high tension strings feel like they disappear under the fingers. Rondos are very high tension, higher then Evah Pirazzi greens! Dominant Pros are the lower tension ones on this video, they're about the same tension as Obligato.

The Rondos sound much more balanced across the set, to my ear, than the PIs. Maybe not as much instant power as the PI's but not bad. I think the Rondos have a lovely sound.

The bad thing about thomastik strings is very bad durability.
@CristianFatu
@CristianFatu 8 ай бұрын
Durability has to do with usage and believe it or not… the PH of ones sweat. There are string players that burn the windings of strings in weeks due to highly corrosive sweat.
