In this video I will be comparing three of my favorite strings sets from Thomastik Infeld: Peter Infeld also known as PI’s, Rondo’s and Dominant Pro’s.
There is no silver bullet and no set of strings will be perfect for all the players and instruments out there. For the purpose of this video I will use the same instrument for the sound samples. Please drop me a line with your impressions in the comments section bellow. If you find some useful information please like and share this video.
Peter Infeld or PI’s are bright, noble, complex sounding strings with a big projection. They deliver instant bow response and feel soft and nimble under the fingers.
Rondo’s are a bit of a special beast because for many years they were available to be purchased only for luthiers or dealers but these days you can order them from your favorite music shop. Before they launched the Dominant Pro’s I thought these are the new Dominants on steroids. I love these strings and honestly I’ve not seen a violin that sounded bad with them!
They have a great clarity, responsiveness, sizzle and power. The feel great under the fingers, soft, they almost disappear.
Dominant Pro’s are dark, focused, quite powerful, it’s a sound that fils the room. I’d encourage you to experiment with different E’s which will change the sound of the whole set. I did notice that these strings feels slightly harder under the finger compared to regular Dominants or other strings. That does not bothers me. I have couple reviews if you'd like to hear more about these strings.
