For all commenting on the "abuse" involved. This is NOT greyhound racing! This is an amateur sport with NO money involved. All the dogs live with their owners. When they stop running, they retire to the sofa. I have had multiple whippet race champions. They are NOT trained with live rabbits. (Mine were trained with a plastic bag tied to a tennis ball. :)) The dogs love this more than anything in the world and it is a really fun sport you can do with your dog. SO many comments from people that assume whippet racing = greyhound racing and have never been to a whippet race!

It seems like the dogs like it, right? But I bet you would tell the opposite thing if YOU EVEN KNEW what's hidden behind these horrible races, and how the trainers let the dogs maul live rabbits and keep keeping them in small spaces. If the dog doesn't win, the owner abandons it or puts it down. If the dog is abandoned, the owner cuts off its ears so other people wouldn't know who was its previous owner. Clearly, animal abuse and the government still allows that.

They're literally bred for racing and coursing
@jacksporran74685 жыл бұрын
@@miles3798 No they were bred for hunting not racing and their breed goes back thousands of years. The courses they are expected to run on are completely different to the real world of coursing. Running at 40+mph in a continuous anti-clockwise direction is completely unnatural and causes horrendous problems with the left hip and leg which manifests in old age. Many dogs break their left leg during their "careers". I'm on my 6th rescue Greyhound I should know.
@miles37985 жыл бұрын
@@jacksporran7468 they were bred to hunt rabbits, and the tight turns are natural to the sighthound group, whether it be coursing, racing or actual hunting. why does it matter whether they're running counterclockwise or not? seems like a load of bullshit to me. in the past i fostered at least a dozen ex-racers - man do i miss having them around! best house guests ever - and none of them had any hip issues. ive never heard of that in racers anyway.
@jacksporran74685 жыл бұрын
@@miles3798 Then you are clearly full of bullshit and peddling an agenda. Whippets & Lurchers were bred for tight turns and rabbits, Greyhounds were not. You clearly don't know your sighthounds. Almost all sighthounds were bred for different prey depending on the geographical region in the world that they are from, which is why there are so many different breeds of sighthounds depending on the natural prey they were bred to hunt. Greyhounds were bred to bring down prey as big, if not bigger then themselves such as deer. It is natural for Greyhounds to change direction in the same way that a deer does but that puts even loads on both sides of the pelvis. Continuous counterclockwise racing (as well as the immense training regime) only loads the inner legs, particularly the rear left driving leg which is completely unnatural to what they were bred for. A 36kg dog running a 40+mph, continuously turning left, puts incredible stresses on the inner legs as they try to overcome the centripetal force which would otherwise throw them outwards. I can tell you now that all of the Greyhounds that I have rescued have had problems with their hips and particularly their rear left legs. My current boy, broke his rear left leg in three places from racing. My current girl has no hair on her rear quarters where they burnt her in her trap to make her race. "in the past i fostered at least a dozen ex-racers - man do i miss having them around! best house guests ever - and none of them had any hip issues. ive never heard of that in racers anyway." You are a bullshit artist. Give me the details of the organisations who you've fostered for plus your details and I will check you out. I rescue for the Forever Hound Trust and the Greyhound Trust, so you better not have fostered for them because I promise, you won't ever again with that fucked up attitude.
@miles37985 жыл бұрын
@@jacksporran7468 JackSporran Ohio Friends of Greyhounds, who are no longer active sadly. We don't foster anymore, it must have been a decade since we last did. Also, I can foster from whoever I want to. So we disagree about something. I bet that will definitely keep them from letting me foster. No reason for you to swear either. Also, we've bred sighthounds for well over 20 years, so I think I know my hounds well (mainly whippets, our kennel name is Wellesley Whippets).

Normally they don't get injured. They normally get into fights over the lure but the muzzles are there to prevent them doing that. They might run into each other but bad injuries are rare. For amateur racing, rewards are usually ribbons and or a little gift like a blanket or toy or bed. Not sure for professional though since I only do amateur with my whippet
