Thank you for giving me the insight to try and pull the battery out without the hold being fully removed! I managed to get the battery out and pulled out the tray. The nut (or whatever) that was holding the bolt was spinning pretty much freely, and was chewed up beyond belief. So I dremel-ed the bolt (and the metal nut insert) out, and just went and replaced with a zinc-plated m8 flange bolt, a nut, and a lock washer. Pretty sure it should hold - only issue is when I tighten it now, I need to manipulate both the nut and the bolt... honestly a way better option then paying 100 bucks for a new tray. Nice. more MK4 content! Yes, rusty fasteners are to be expected on an MK4, especially where you guys are located and anywhere on the rust belt. Been there.. I was wondering if you were going to put the cover back on! Mine has never fit right over the battery since I got the car! 😬 I still have the insulator/blanket thingie that goes around the battery too..

If you don't want to have to reset radios and such, there may be other 'easy to connect to' terminals that you can put another battery in parallel with while you replace the main battery.

Changed the battery on one of these, but I’m unable to get the battery hold down to tighten. I think the new battery may be a little bigger than the old one, but not sure. The old hold down is really rusty so I ordered a new one.

My MK4 2000 is totally out of power, no lights, radio not even the auto door unlock. What might be the reason?
