I've watched a lot of videos recently because i decided to start changing my F30 328i oil myself. NONE of them mentioned that the oil plug was a one time use thing. Thanks for pointing that out! Very helpful. It wouldn't surprise me if the car wash place I'd been taking it to the last couple of years to get my oil changed did not change it or probably even my oil filter since it's not a typical oil filter.

Tip. When you remove the drain plug the oil is streaming straight down and if the drain plug drops in your oil catcher right under the stream (like it probably will) the oil with splash everywhere like crazy. So pull it off to the side as you finish unscrewing it

Exact procedure and tools for the E84 X1 sDrive28i 2014 RWD. The iDrive “Vehicle info” display on this model does not have the option of “measuring oil” below the engine oil level status. Frankly, I much prefer a dipstick to physically measure the oil; also, occasionally, extract the oil using a vacuum container system, it works great on my 2013 E350 coupe. Great video, as always!

Did you input your own service to the car's computer afterwards? Just curious if the car notifies you to change it's oil. Then you decide to change your oil yourself. Does it still notify you? Do you need to log a change oil history into its computer?

@@MonkiestMonkey You'll have to reset the oil counter on the cluster. There's many videos on yt to tell you how to get access to the menu on the cluster to reset. In terms of adding history to your service, you need to program it using software with an OBD 2 attachment. Good luck!

8nm = 10.83 ft-lb, which is a very low torque setting like he said. 70.81 ft-lbs would sheer the drain plug in half!

Never mind guys, I just changed the oil on my F30 2013 316D, and guess what I found on the right side under the engine cover? Yup a dipstick. So my f30 does in fact have digital oil readings and a manual dipstick!

N20/26 takes 5L of oil. There's no need to pour it in parts. You can prove it to yourself by just pouring all the oil that came out of it into the same 5L canister. The electronic level thing shows it full in wide range of ~4.5 liters to ~6.5 liters.

Same with my 328d. It shows full after an oil change as long as you're close, but it also has a real dipstick which I prefer to the electronic sensor.

I drained all the oil out of my 2016 328i and measured a total of 6.9 qrts. That was after I bought the car as certified from the BMW dealer, so now everytime I change the oil I ad 6.9qrts. Then I run the engine on a flat surface and measure the oil with the idrive system and it shows "oil level ok" all the time.

Please do a video on a BMW V8 car. Like the BMW X5 or 6 Series using the N63TU motor. My independent mechanic says to stay away from the Bimmer V8s bc of oil consumption problems and so on. I’d LOVE for you guys to do an in-depth look at the N63 motor and tell us what we need to know. Also, just ordered a set of Zimmerman rotors for my W203 C-Class. Very good quality. Thanks!!

There’s an o ring on the drain plug itself, and it’s also made of plastic which degrades much faster than aluminum would

I have the wagon 2014 328ix and it seems (per Amazon) the drain plugs do not fit my car, are they universal between 2, 4 and 5 doors? It is certainly helpful that these are one time plugs, thank you for pointing that out. I would of been stranded otherwise. They really don't like us doing this ourselves do they?

Great info. I have a '17 330i xDrive. Is it still possible to do the oil change with only the front of the vehicle raised? Or will not all of the oil drain out, like it will with the rear wheel drive models?

Yes, absolutely. While the oil is draining into your pan, you could always lower the vehicle back down until it is done draining, then raise it back up to complete the job! if you wanted that extra.

I recently changed the oil in my friend's F30 328i xDrive. It has metal oil pan and drain plug. I added 4 qts and let it warm up. When I checked it, it showed the level to be at max. Could I have not drained all the old oil out? I have seen that the maximum actually ranges quite a bit. Should I add in a 5th qt even though it reads full since it calls for 5.1 qt in the manual?

It is not necessary to add oil. I have similar experience and no problem since oil level is at max. Mine is 2014 328i sedan, plastic oil pan and drain plug.

I always suck out dirty oil from oil filter housing. Almost 200ml came out usually. Then... pour new engine oil to the OFH (not too much...) . I've learned from pro mechanics. Even old canister type filter... I fill the new oil before install it.

Not necessary. Only need to prime the oil system if you rebuild the engine and starting for the first time.

Now I've got really paranoid as Ive just heard about this and looked deeper into it and the interwebs says all sorts about whether it's needed or not.
