Adam, Excellent video and reporting on your part. One of you very best efforts to date. The past few weeks of 2017 turned out to be very tragic for both first responders and residents of the Bronx. First, we have this terrible 4th alarm fire you covered which left multiple families homeless and injured several fire fighters. Overnight during the early morning hours of December 27th there was an all hands occupied building fire in the Bronx where additional engine and ladder companies were special called which was followed by a third alarm occupied apartment building fire several miles away and finally a 4th alarm occupied apartment building fire which all resulted in leaving many families left homeless. That same morning there was also a subway train collision involving a light train with no passengers in the river tube between Manhattan and Queens which resulted in several injuries. Finally we have the horrific 5th alarm apartment building fire in the Belmont section on the evening of December 28th where twelve people perished and many others were left fighting for their lives in hospitals. In addition the same fire also left over twenty families homeless. So much fire activity during the final weeks of 2017 in the Bronx reminds me of the late 1960's and 1970s which was the busiest era in FDNY history. The only difference is that all these tragic fires in the Bronx during the final weeks of 2017 all occurred in occupied buildings.

For all the people saying negative things about the FDNY, I can't tell the following from just watching this so I will not slam them as many of you are. 1. are they inside trying to get people out. 2. are they inside trying to do an interior attack. 3. Do they have a water supply issue. Those are some good reasons why you don't want to just dump water on the top floors. I think these guys have done this before and you key board fire Chiefs should think before we take shoots at these guys.

Clyde being a retired firefighter officer (cap), there is a fine line between being aggressive and being foolish. The negative element is that you live without complication majority of the time -- but it will catch up with firefighters one day either in the form of dramatic injury or compromised health problems.

Until I watched this video, I always thought FDNY had their shit together! During an entire career in law enforcement, and as a trained fire investigator and volunteer fireman, I have never seen, nor heard of anything like I saw in this video! The fire went to four alarms because the FDNY ALLOWED it to go to four alarms! I never thought I'd see firemen, at the ready in their towers, just sit and watch the fire progress without doing any suppression at all. I've never heard of firemen doing overhaul in a ceiling with active fire directly over their heads! The Boy Scouts could have done a better job of suppressing this fire. But, then, THEY have adult leadership!

Not impressed at all with 3-4 interior firefighters dilly-dallying around with fire intensifying above and all around and have to stop and remove helmets to put hoods mask and regulator in service. No water keeping the fire in check from towers? Don't try to tell me they were hose streams operating inside. I did briefly see a couple squirts upward through the burned through open rough but should have removed them from the interior and hit the large body of fire with ladder pipes and tower to knock it down. Tactics on this fire seemed slightly off or odd?

All what the firefighters on the ladders are doing: They are watching the flames. No water over the ladders to the roof - nothing! - Is this a "special NYFD tactic", that I simply just do not understand...? Did they waiting for the moment when the fire will jump over to the left building, because one burning building is not enough for them and isn´t worth to react...? And what these guys are doing in the apartment immediate under the burning roof - do they waiting that the roof breaking down over them...? Questions over questions... And the most important question remains: *Why the hell they do not clear the roof fire b e f o r e the flames are so high...???*
@ETBX15 жыл бұрын
Seeing so many fires like this in the past few years (and these buildings used to be very good at containing fire, even when on the top floor), there must be some "good on paper" legal procedure that's been added. Doesn't have to be the most efficient; just keeps you "covered" on the legal reports; that you "followed the rules". Working for another "safety sensitive" city agency, that's what everything is all about now. Before Governor's Island was cleared for the park, they were using the buildings for training to reevaluate the best tactics, yet these things seemed to have gotten worse after that. From what I gather from people who answer commenters, it seems they're worried about steam and other danger water might pose for the inside crews. So now, it looks like they've determined it is "safer" to let the outside (including the roof and cockloft, as highly flammable as they are) burn. (And just ventilate, which adds more air to that part of the fire). I would think maybe they should get the inside crews out sooner then, but then one could argue they might be doing search and rescue.

400 men? 3 towers and not able to put that fire out...wow great job; not. Not cooling the roof while firefighters are inside, strange tactic. Taking off the helmet while roof burns above you and no BA (not even mask on and ready to use)...just crazy and stupid.

Hi JB91710, I think your wrong, my reason for this is this, I believe the building was a residential block. Yes the fire has caused a lot of damage but if the crews tried to fight the fire internally with hand lines, far less water damage is being caused, yes the crews are taking punishment but I don't know any Ff who didn't enjoyed being in the thick of it knocking down a fire. The moment you use ariel ladders that are pumping out 12-15 bar pressure, all that water is going to flood all the apartments below that were not effected by the fire and you probably ending up pumping out the basement. From my experience not everyone has insurance. As for the Ff having to put his face mask on, that could have gone 'tits up' as we say in the UK, trying to put a face mask on wearing gloves isn't easy at the best of times.

I’ve been watching these types of vids from the NYFD for a coupe fo weeks now. My respect for these people has grown exponentially! What a tough job they have when they’re in the thick of it. Maybe an expert on this stuff can answer this for me. Why do they wait so long to put water on some of these fires? It just seems like in those buckets just watching the fire burn? I’m going to take a wild guess and say it’s because there are firefighters in there and they don’t want the water blasts to hit them or blow holes in the roof or walls which could expose them to fire. Is that right? Anyway, great job FDNY and all firefighters throughout the world. God speed!

Good job to the officer saving the pits. As far as the FD goes... Totally disgraceful. 1st. I understood S&R teams had a job to do. The steam and smoke created would cause blinding conditions trying to do your jobs. However, seriously with no water on the blaze til 13 minutes video time? Where were the people hitting the rooftops?. Why was no one of the "400" firefighters doing anything to extinguish the fire. Once water WAS put on the building it was out in no time... So it appears. Instead the flaming debris was allowed to fall from the building allowing potential for spread into lower levels, injury to those on the ground, and potentially creating more damages that could have complicated the problem. Oh, right.... Nothing happened from that debris.... and there were emergency crews on the ground to deal with the aftermath.The team inside.... Given the circumstances, you did what was needed, but removing your helmets to put on the masks?.... Then you guys wonder why you get hurt in these fires. You KNOW going in the air is toxic (plastics, foams, paints, etc..) going in. You should know that with fire in the ceiling; on the roof that your in immediate danger. Helmets are on your head for a reason. But hey, I guess nothing happened so those few seconds made it ok to endanger yourselves and your fellow firemen. Hats off to you. You put the fire out quickly when you finally did put water on everything.

FDNY is the top fire dept in the world and some of you knuckleheads have the audacity to pick apart their techniques. In case some of you missed it, the only reason that they probably didn't put water on the fire is because there were guys inside, and if you hadn't noticed the blasting power of the smooth bore nozzle, it would have brought parts of the building down on those guys inside, so they waited to make sure the building was cleared out before starting to spray water. Think about it it makes sense, clear the building and do a search of any residence that could have been trapped first then put the replaceable structure out!!! Know your facts before you shoot off at the mouth folks. As a former chief I would have done the same.

This is from firefighters fighting the fire from the inside of the building. IDEA!!!!! someone design a DRONE that the FIRE DEPT can fly! This DRONE has a "GUN" that can be LOADED/RELOADED with "SMALL SHAPED CHARGE BULLETS" This DRONE could then be flown into position where it could "remotely controlled SHOOT AT" and "blow inward" the screens and windows that can't be broken by water pressure alone. As an example ... in this fire there aren't enough towers available in the right position due to the spread of the fire! As you can see, a water gun is trying to break out windows that are high up, but the angle of attack is too great, consequently the water pressure doesn't break them! Consequently they have to wait for fire to reach the windows from the inside and "burn them out" It's sadly just a waste of valuable time, water, and property! I'm sure it's frustrating for the firemen as well. I'm too damn old to design it or i would ! ! ! !
