Back in high school I never paid much attention to Tool until a friend of mine urged me to go with him to Lollapalooza in 1997. I left absolutely mind blown by Tool's performance and watching Danny Carey play live was the biggest inspiration for me. I immediately began saving my money and a little more than six months later I bought my first drum kit. To this day Tool is my favorite band, by far!

I felt like it was a good decision for Maynard to allow his bandmates to be more the focal point of the songs. At this point it's more like Danny Carey is the frontman and I cant find it in me to complain about that.

After watching Part I last week*, I posted my thoughts regarding the "simplicity underneath the complexity" that many Tool songs possess. I also complimented your analysis/breakdown this song as well as your ability to clearly explain concepts that may be challenging or even difficult for some to grasp. Once again - job well done! I'd like to expand and/or clarify my previous thoughts. While there is a definite "simplicity under complexity" theme in the Tool catalog, in no way does that imply that their songs are simplistic; nor easy to learn, play, or perform. It takes a high level of skill and musicianship to perform most Tool songs at anywhere near to the same level as Danny, Adam, Justin, and that singer guy (what's his name again?) 😁 * There should be a special place in hell set aside for people that analyze half of a Tool song (or any great song), then wait an entire week before releasing the 2nd half!! The entire world's economy suffered last week - the drop in production, anemic consumer spending, and spike in work related accidents was primarily due to inattention and carelessness of anxiety-ridden followers unable to concentrate, unable think about anything other than Part II....

I honestly didn't expect there to be this much to dissect, but damn. I think that this is their most rhythmically intense album, which they mentioned in interviews leading up to the release. I dug the album overall but the only underwhelming aspect for me was that a lot of Adam's riffs or leads come off as exercises in minor pentatonic. Great video and analysis!
@Gnusseable
@Gnusseable 4 жыл бұрын
I know, right? They are barely riffs, but more of percussive rythmic ideas that never really turn fully into riffs.. I don't think Tool is anything special, but I actually expected more from them.

@@InfamousQwaQwaFruit I feel like there was lots of innovation on the rhythmic side of things. Like, this was one of the most generic songs on the album and even here they were triple-stacking polymeter which is something I don't really recall hearing on other Tool albums (okay, not true polymeter, but you know what I mean.) Adam seemed like he was innovative with all the effects he used too. I do wish there were more interesting riffs and vocal lines, but the album's definitely grown on me a lot since I first heard it.

Check out Rick Beato's "What makes this song great" episode on Schism. After I saw that, I painstakingly counted out the rhythm structure to all of their songs. I just left the CDs in my player (there's more to count on Lateralus and 10,000 Days) and did nothing but rewind and count beats on the way to and from work for months. I can't recommend this enough. You'll develop a great ear for rhythm structures by practicing it on your own. You'll start to really notice the uncommon times in any music instinctively - and you should always follow that up by trying to figure out what they're doing. The next step is to try writing your own riffs in odd times. Every riff you write, find a way to change it to 7, then change it to 11, then change it to 5, then change it to 13, and so on. I recommend this because that's a path I went down as a guitarist and I think I'm better for it, so maybe it can grow you, too.

Great analysis, Sir. The language of music has always fascinated me and the members of TOOL are masters of it. A gradual, methodical digression of the highly complex to the blatantly simple is designed to elicit the epiphany in the listener. This technique is used in all manner of philosophy, religion and cult. A true art form of the human condition.❤

As a music theory neophyte, I enjoyed the point you made around the 7 minute mark about the musical complexity being resolved into something simpler, which really ties in with the theme of the song and the point being made lyrically at that moment too. Definitely my favourite part of the song, and nice to think of it now at a level beyond "it just sounds awesome".

The timing of the video with the music is funny sometimes as it doesn't make sense. At the end of the video you talk about Adam's riff and then show Adam taking off his guitar and holding it in the air. I imagine the last riff actually being played while he just holds his guitar with one hand in the air. 🤣

That fan throwing their hoodie in the air is hilarious to me. Obviously they weren't playing that exact part of Fear Inoculum. But the timing is so funny! The fan getting excited during what we are hearing doesn't match at all. In the middle of the slowed down part is when the fan decided "FUCK YEEEEEEAH!!!" 😂

Wanted to like this, only to realise I already did. I could never count a Tool song, but I do feel it. 😁

I wanna see you do 7empest and see your reaction to that 21/16 guitar section. The entire song is nuts.

Hey i totally enjoyed both the parts as it was so simple to understand and i would like to tell you i also like the way you educate in a very simple way. Thanks and Keep up the good work. Also that percussion used in the track is a Tabla not congo or Bongo. Cheers

Did you actually realise that in their last song from that album, 7empest, they combine rifs out of vicarious and rosetta stoned and so on? I tried to figure it out but I would like to watch a video on this, where someone who know music better than me deals with it.

That's weird because I felt like I'd heard a lot of the riffs on this album before the first time I heard it.

Interesting, thanks for another nice analysis. I am not musician or have any proper knowledge, but what I think that I am missing is the relation of the lyric with the first asynchronous rhythmic part and more synchronized last section. To me, this make very coherent with the lyric, so as far as inoculum existed the rhythm remains asynchronous but as soon as in lyric start to fight against the inoculated subject it reached to epidemic part and everything will become synchronize again , I guess , maybe it's just over thinking , I should go and get a life

God, imagine if tool had two guitarists. There would probably be five(including vocals) completely different melodies going on.
