Great reaction. I will take responsibility to give you the hypotheses of the whole album concept. It is called "The Great Turn", like artwork for the album with the dude with two heads. The album can be listened in two ways. From Fear Inoculum to Tempest (from light to dark) or otherwise from Tempest to Feat Inoculum. In the middle we have Descending. Descending was initially called Ascending/Descending, the first part of it is light, the second part is dark + it was the first for this album to be written and the most complex one. Basically through the album we have a journey from one side to another Fear Inoculum - immunity to fear (being the core evil in the album), enlightenment Pneuma - searching for the inner light, embracing it Invincible - preparing for the inner battle + winning the battle in the end, which greatly showed by Danny's drums in the second part of the song. Treat it as going on march and fighting with your nemesis and eventually winning. Descending - call for arms + fight Culling Voices - doubts within the mind Tempest - infection with fear. Those descriptions are obviously do not reflect the whole depth of the songs. But it shows the transition within the journey and that it can go both ways. mostly from dark Tempest side actually, since every tool first album songs are really heavy, which is not the case with FI. There are a lot of hints, but the core key for all of this is the artwork "The Great Turn" by Alex Grey. You can also see that the middle of the artwork is the spiral, which is reflected on the album cover + reflects Descending song. + there is a video created with this figure from "The Great Turn" where it is floating in the spirals and getting soaked into a red eye creature. So if you take this video and add to it its backwards version it perfectly matches Descending song. The narrative hidden depth of this album will amaze generations to come.

Inoculum - (noun) a substance used for inoculation. For me, Tool is the modern day "Pink Floyd" in that not only are they incredible musicians, they speak to the human experience and social issues. This song speaks to our journey toward overcoming fear and it's control over our actions, or better stated, overcoming the ability of fear to suppress / oppress.

Inoculate the fear of getting old. Inoculate the fear of releasing an album after 13 years, and hoping it will be relevant. I heard Maynard say that during an interview. Remaining relevant as you get older seems to be the main theme of the album in my opinion.

Fun fact: if you fold the image on the album cover in half 'TOOL' appears to be a syringe. Which is interesting not only because of the album title but also because of all the songs by them that can be layered upon each other to make "new" songs out of the old ones you already know. Lost keys/Rosetta stoned with faaip de oiad on top is haunting. Tool is really the gift that keeps on giving, always enjoyable to hear your discussions on them. Can not wait until you get to 7empest. So glad I splurged and went to see this tour twice in 19! You never know when your favorite band is going to call it quits (or the whole world will get flushed down the toilet) and it damn sure was nice hearing the band play an ass load of new material. In Cincy after the intermission Danny unleashed that giant gong of his out to the front of the stage and made it his bitch for about 10 minutes. We were all tripping out on it. Tool is one of a few bands that sound as good or better live and the stage show has evolved into visceral psychedelic eye candy as well. As a bonus I was lucky enough to have my boys with me at both shows and we caught Descending both nights. Descending wasn't played at many of their North American concerts so we totally lucked out. My advice if and when the tour ever resumes, buy the fucking tickets and go see the show. I'll be that tall asshole in front of you that won't sit down, and I am not sorry at all. Buy your tickets before me if you want a better view, and for fuck's sake stand up. This isn't a James Taylor concert bitches.

To me this song is relevant from anyone’s perspective. We all act and react to fear. And usually our fears lead us down paths in life away from what and where we’re truly meant to be. But also, the fear that we’re fed daily thru media. At least I feel, in American culture. We’re all fed fear which keeps us distracted, from truth and faith, true faith. I see this song as almost a prayer to remove fear. To inoculate it.

Innoculated FROM the source of fear. This song is where the pinnacle of personal growth is realised.. Like many tool songs, this speaks to the divided self, ego/soul, higher self / lower self ect. The devil on your shoulder, that inner critic giving negative whispers that keep us from thriving and hides from our concious awareness. Now that it is unvieled and seen for what it is he can release it from its control over him and exhale in relief from the chaos and fear that this aspect of him brings.

1:22 its not about doing better for your audience, its important to know the lyrics and to try and grapple with them yourself, thats why people get on those listening to Tool for the first time about lyrics. Its deeply metaphorically rich, and Tools music isn't just about listening to it and having a good time but theres a lot of philosophy and metaphor in it. So don't worry about pleasing the audience and acting unnaturally like we're your boss or something, just try to enjoy the music and take it as other people giving flawed directions for more ways to experience the music. Because people do suck at giving directions and this comes out a lot as angry sounding words and insults borne from frustration. Easier to blame other people for not getting something instead of yourself.

15:14 during a time where fear is becoming a more prevailing force in the world, love and art and understanding the beauty even in the ugly things in the world can inoculate you from the self inflicting madness of fear when it becomes your driving engine. Both in the meaning of the song, and even the construction of the music itself. I believe you can activate parts of your brain the resonate with certain tones and frequencies just the same way your brain resonates with an optical illusion in just the right way to create this appealing experience, but we only ever think about these experiences in the terms of drugs when those are just the easiest paths to these fundamental truths found in alien perspectives. Besides fear itself, what you you think is the disease that comes from it?

After 13 years maybe they were fearful of how this album will be received. This song seems almost like they are summoning something from the past, in order to sacrifice it in order to move forward. he chants a little spell "deceiver says" part.. and the "innumerate all that im to do calculating steps away from you" is like the planning and preperation of what they need to do in order to "divide from mania" it feels like a metaphor for what they went through releasing the album maybe.. Anyway, just a thought.

@richardchurchill51814 жыл бұрын
There is an incredible amount of meaning in Fear Inoculum. But, where to start unpacking it all? I'll start by saying that I think the whole album is based on aging and the changes in fears, concerns and purpose that come with aging and experience, with Fear Inoculum setting up the themes of the entire album. In the first two lines there is "Immunity / Long overdue" giving a hint that this has developed with time and age. This is followed by "Contagion / I exhale you / Naive / I opened up to you / Venom in mania // Now, contagion / I exhale you". Fear is obviously the contagion that naiveté allowed him to fall prey to, and that fear is poisonous, contagious and prone to creating manic responses. It is that mania that is venomous as, based in fear, the mania is irrational. "Naive" indicates his youth, his inexperience, in allowing fear to infect and control him. Note that exhalation is the expelling of air that has reduce oxygen and increased carbon dioxide. I think we can treat "exhale" and "expel" as synonyms, here, as show by the later lines, "Exhale, expel / Recast my tale / Read my allegorical elegy." There is also a tie here to Pneuma with repeated references to exhaling, and thus to breath. If you look the meaning of pneuma it comes from Greek and means "breath." The interpretation of breath has spirit exists in Greek thought, but is also found in the first verses of Genesis. Genesis 1:2 reads (as per the NIV) "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." If you look at the Hebrew, the word translated as spirit also means breath, so we have the same connection between breath and spirit. In Genesis 2:7 (NIV) there is "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." God's breath or spirit is used to give life, breath, spirit to a man. In English, apart from pneuma's meaning as spirit, we end up with the more mundane pneumatic tires and pneumatic tools, which are air filled and air powered. But, here we are dealing more with the etymological, religious and historical usage as spirit, which is carried into the next song. (The theme is also carried into Invincible, where "the warrior" fears not the fears of youth but of loss of meaning and relevance as his life, his breath, his spirit, wanes with age.) The sources of fear are the deceiver, and the fear acts to possess him, isolating him from the light (knowledge) of others, the spirit of others. But as experience, the breathing in of life experience (not just fear) grows in others he sees that light, that life, that clarity, and is inoculated against the fear. But, as the other parts of the album show, not all fears are baseless. Inoculation against the control that fear can exert makes the responses much different. They are no-longer controlling and isolating, nor motivating to the self-destructive. Rational fears understood rationally motivate rational responses. He wants to enumerate the steps he must take to separate himself from irrational fears, and thus his irrational spiritual clone that has acted out of fear, delusional from the manic responses he has had to those irrational fears. The whole song is symbolic, and thus allegorical. It is a sad, almost tragic tale of how he was controlled by fear, and is the an elegy for how life was. And so, he weaves the allegorical elegy we read and hear, with the remainder of the song speaking of the expelling of irrational fears and their responses, along with the ending of their control over him. The lines "Exorcise the disparate / Poison for eternity" should be read as a single statement, just as the lines "Purge me and evacuate / The venom and the fear that binds me" should.

Consider this: replace the word "deceiver" with (ideological extremist of choice). I have long-thought of Maynard as prophetic, though, in my maturity have come to realize that he has a firm grasp upon reality and is globally conscious. Thus, evidence of his awareness is inherent in all he produces and he knowingly obfuscates his perceptions to prevent the wrong parties from realizing the impact of his influence. The phrase "a magician never reveals his secrets" belies the simplicity of a trick to perpetuate the suspension of disbelief. Or, I have had too much to drink and need to sleep.

I took the song to be about being inoculated against the venomous rhetoric we are exposed to every day. To me, it was a direct rebuke of a certain leader of a certain country who spreads fear of immigrants, fear of the poor, fear of anyone that doesn’t look like you. The inoculum is the wisdom to see through the lies and recognize the deceit. To see the truth.

Other thing is that there are some differences between album and live version of Pneuma.. so.. yep.. :) Hope you enjoy Pneuma as much as I do.. from my point of view it's one of best songs and I had days when I listened that in loop for almost whole day.. and I didn't had enough of that... and I had to break that circle not because I was fed up with Pneuma.. but because I missed other masterpieces from them.. :)
@nickmagrick77024 жыл бұрын
32:30 you guys missed pretty much all the religious and metaphysical references in there. For instance, deceiver stands for the literal devil and the christian depiction of him, or it could be a reference to the snake, which itself can all be an allegory for the spread of an intangible force that parasitizes people with deception. The world is increasingly being filled with societies that grow a greater and greater use of deception for monetary practices and its becoming quite normal even acceptable sometimes. Point is, lots of this stuff is meant to map onto both the present and representations of things that have been repeated not only throughout human history but the history of all life and even the story of the struggle between chaos and order in the cosmos. 32:48 "Why does he say poison the eternity then" I think this is part of that answer. You can't "recover" from the darkness thats within people, evil is just a concept we place onto actions with a story normally to describe it. Its the Yin and Yang, one cannot exist without the other and if one side of the coin ever gets too strong any system it operates in will destabilize and collapse to find equilibrium again.

Thanks for interesting insights. We actually discussed exactly that (the literal deceptive devil) soon after we finished recording. I (him) have thought that finding and inner devil inside oneself is important - as a way to knowing a dangerous /evil part of oneself, knowing how not to be defeated by it, but rather use it for good. But also never being safe from it, as it might be impossible

@@initum1599 no problem, I enjoy talking about philosphy and art. These songs are dense, so theres a lot of correct interpretations of it. Thats why meta-textual stuff is really cool, when theres some underlying truth it applies across a huge number of different subjects. Like Yin and Yang does. Speaking from personal experience, it is my experience with what I can only call evil that has both given me a great capacity to have compassion for enemies and a tolerance for evil people and their corrupting influence. Having overcome my own darkness and acknowledging that its a part of me, like greed, lust, wrath and all these other things we associate with negative emotions, I am less likely to be swayed by my fear and these other emotions that might tempt me to react. When you understand that you and your enemy are the same, the fighting becomes pointless. Ultimately we are all part of same collective spirit. God was the anchor that tied people together like this in the past, but "god is dead and we killed him" -Nietzsche Parts of religions may have been based off of lies but there was some truth in it and it allowed people to find collective meaning. Religion served as a buffer between evil/chaos and disorder but it did not serve well as an inoculation of it, just avoidance. Yeah you can't be safe from evil. You have to learn that good and evil are just concepts, that any virtue becomes a dark thing went valued to the exclusion of all other virtues. There is ultimately no safety from tension, from friction. There is no escape from death, nor is there from suffering. But find that balance and you can reduce the harm as well as make something meaningful from that pain and transcend it. If I had to use a specific example of what type of things people are being inoculated against, one of the prime suspects would be advertising, and politics as entertainment. Two very corrupting destabilizing forces that prey on our baser instincts. Sorry this was pretty long.

No need to be sorry for the length of the message. It read well, thanks.
