Fear of Aging: Finding Freedom in This Impermanent World I, with Tara Brach
While it’s natural to have fears of what’s ahead, when we learn to face the inevitability of change and loss without resistance, we discover true peace and freedom in the midst. In a very direct way, our awareness of impermanence awakens unconditional loving. These two talks explore the ways we habitually deny or resist reality, and the three interrelated pathways-refuge in the present moment, love and awareness-that liberate us.
Note: Tara quotes 14th century mystic Julian of Norwich, in her work “Revelations of Divine Love”.

This resonated so deeply with me. I’m coming up on my fathers one year anniversary of his passing and it has been the most difficult year of my life after living out of the country and being left my a partner I thought was in it for the long haul. It’s been traumatizing to say the least and I’ve found myself after getting settled into a home being fearful of losing everyone around me eventually. I’m not afraid to die but my sensitive self is very nervous to witness all of the loss that lies ahead of me. This video helped and I’m very grateful for you Tara.

Dear Tara, thank you so much for this amazing and deep message. I am 74 yrs. old and feeling knee and back pain on and off. Even going up or down stairs is harder than last year, I eat very healthy and walk 10000 step almost every day. Your words have reached me deeply since my fear of aging has increased so much lately. My husband passed away this year and your videos help me so much to keep my spirits up. ❤️🙏🏼🦋🌷

Hi Tara: Very timely to have received your "Fear of Aging" talk on KZbin this evening. I've been struggling with my fears of aging. I've contended with a few health issues over the past year or so, which at times made me feel quite anxious until I remembered what Andy Whitfield said: "Be here now is all about being present and not fearing what you don't know." I'm turning 69 next week too. You recited one of my favorite mantras "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well." I found your talk about accepting impermanence, forgetting about the future, and staying anchored in the precious present very reassuring and calming. Thank you. Namaste 🙏🕊🌏 Jenny

Thank you Tara. I don't currently have a home and I haven't had one of my own for the last two three years. Healing a devastating medical issue without family support. Having to ask ppl can stay in your home. It's been very tough..extremely humbling. Before that I was renting.. I've never owned a home. Living off my covid check currently one day at a time. I'm really grateful for the covid stimulus and for the kind people with that have let me stay in their home.

I am dealing with this right now. I have always looked years younger than my age. My daughters, who are 13 years apart, have always been mistaken for my sister, or "a friend." Here's the great thing: I have had a very exciting life, and have always gotten a lot of attention, and even a bit of "fame." Becoming a grandmother has made me happier than anything that has ever happened to me. I adore my grandkids, and can't wait to see them again. Covid has kept me from travelling, and I miss them sooooo much. But, yeah, giving up the power of being young looking is, well, interesting, lol

Thank you very much. Recently I've been troubled with the thought of my own mortality after doing a body checkup and the doctor's diagnosis kind of rattled me. My survival mind keeps thinking about what to do and what might happen. Only by anchoring myself to the present moment do I find peace. I still experience panic attacks now and then but will learn to take refuge in here, now and always. Thanks for very much for your sharing, Tara. It resonated with me and is a great help. 👍

And Julian of Norwich near the end ... a lesson that nothing in human life has changed for centuries. Words written back in the middle ages can still resonate. Although a Buddhist, I am reading her book in the 'Thirty Day' series (ave.mariapress). So wonderful that a medieval mystic is a published author in our 21st century.

Theres fear, avoidance and grief when I think of aging. Avoiding making peace with reality. Numbing ourselves, eg, Spending too much time on- line. Its a survival- brain strategy. To avoid the vulnerability of aging. We do this by dominating and aggression too, and by trying to control the uncontrollable. We then lose touch of intimacy with our inner selves. So we go into a trance. We then talk of needing to take refuge in awareness of the present moment. Waking up from being in our head and coming back to our body and heart. Taking refuge by resting in Reality. Knowing that all will be well. We have to let go of our ideas of present, future and past. And just be in the present moment.

Dear Tara, thank you for the great meditation. I have a tremendous fear of the death of dear ones. As i moved from the fearful abdomen to the heart it was hard and the I groaned. When you talked about the universality of that suffering I simply felt I hadnt thought this before. I felt my.heart was straining with the suffering.

I have only listened to the beginning of this talk and then I have paused it because already it is said what I need and I thank you for this. I have a condo and 4 hour driveway I have a summer mobile home where I watch horses and a mirror lake and a Creek and close to town. I married and moved here and 1991 into this area I mean and my ex husband Is in the same area. Within the next year or 2 more 3 I will have to give up this place where i summer for 5 months. I can only this because of an inheritance. I'm very thankful but I have to set my age of 74 and the fact that I don't have any family so I have to move things a little bit At a time. So thank you for your talk, already I have benefitted. Linda

An issue for my early 70's I 'try' to keep at bay, or managed, though been through two x health emergencies, but come out safely, still high-healthy. Do my best to be accepting of what will be. With some confidence, but no certainty. Adaptability is a clue, or may be the key. The underlying general principle is confidence, trust and faith NOW in a future, the future. From the Latin: 'confido'. To believe, 'to be in a place of. faith' ? One diversion you have not mentioned: 'retail therapy' ? The biggest Q: The Great Unknown, or The Great Unknowing, or The Great Unknowable. An issue seldom discussed even privately - one on one (?) Thank you Tara Brach, for bringing in this 'eternal' question - this very day
