DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial.I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive

I'm loving this series addressing the issue of MJ's fear of flying and actually moving forward to finding a resolution. Kudos to MJ for picking at that scab and her wish to conquer her fear. And kudos to you, Steve, for finding a fantastic approach to contrasting her fear with positive reinforcement. I'm really looking forward to seeing Reema take MJ up for her first lesson.

One of the reasons I started flying lessons is because I had a fear of flying. Mostly, however, it was a fear of not being in control and/or not understanding what was going on. I'm just over half-way through my lessons and I'm post solo, and I can say I'm over that fear of flying. In fact, I love it now.

One thing about fear and stress I learned in the military: Constant exposure to it is the way to get over it. I had an intense fear of heights until I started hang gliding. Not easy thing so I get where MJ is coming from. Props to her for facing up to it. What an awesome instructor! I'll be her wingman any time.
@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix 7 жыл бұрын
SiliconValleySky. yes and no, exposure therapy is a thing, and while "constant" exposure worked for you its entirely possible for it to have the opposite effect. or for there to be an effect like PTSD. being acclimated to something is useless if it results in trauma that effects other parts of your life, i know many military people that became acclimated to the violence of combat due to constant exposure but also suffer negative effects in their civil lives.
@SVSky
@SVSky 7 жыл бұрын
Combat is a separate thing, as I would argue that if you're "used" to combat (as opposed to being able to function) you will have trouble integrating with society, however everything else the question is... do you want to do whatever it is your fears are holding you back from or not? You don't just become who you want to be, you forge your personality with heat, pressure and abrasion.

This is essentially how my mother started out. She was terrified of flying, and a friend of her father's (who had flown army assault gliders in WWII) recommended she take an intro lesson to get over her fear. To make a long story short, she ended up flying DC-9s for a major US airline, and met my father at the airport along the way.

Reema did exactly the right thing in explaining WHY planes don't just fall out of the air. It's a real force that holds them up there, and it is impossible for a plane to just fall out of the sky. Air pressure is real. That was excellent. I've used that before and honestly, it's a big deal for people to realize that the plane isn't hanging in the air by "magic". WTG Reema.

I haven't really followed you from the beginning but 20 min videos become interesting when you have the crew you have built. Please let them know of my comments. They're doing a great job. 3) as someone who is getting more and more involved with video editing and multi camera views, I can sure appreciate the editing, time, and talent that's needed to put into a video like this. Looking forward to more videos like this and to continue the series. Great work!

Great job Mr Flightchops! Reema's very calming and quiet nature shone through, putting MJ at ease. Flying in a sim like that takes a lot of pressure right off, and allows the student to take in more detail and new visual clues in "bite size" chunks. A great idea to get MJ to show someone else who can't yet fly, some of the principle things she can recall from the lesson. Well done. Looking forward to episodes 3,4,5...

That was just awesome. Yes, a typical first lesson, as I remember it. It was so dense, so it was an easy watch for the whole 20+ minutes. I think shortening it wouldn't have done it justice. I'd really love to see more episodes, maybe see her take a lesson in a real aircraft or so.
@FlightChops

pinkdispatcher Awesome - Glad people are liking the length - I really struggled to cut this one down, and just decided that I'd leave it at ~22 minus. I figured those that didn't want to stick it out could click away. As it stands, I boiled it down from more than 90 minutes just over twenty.

There is nothing wrong with taking your time and going one day at a time. At least you are starting to see things from a pilot's point of view. Simulators are an amazing thing and a good instructor like Reema can get you flying in no time. Besides you can say one thing that almost no other pilot can say without lying. You landed the plane on the center line first try. It was nearly witchcraft.

This is an awesome second part, both from the point of what's going on with MJ and from the point of production. And as someone who's only a recreational armchair pilot in PC sims, jealous of people able to enjoy the real thing, and someone with a strong fear of not exactly flying, but heights in general (though able to overcome it to a manageable degree at least when it comes to traveling on big commercial airliners), I really envy MJ what you're doing for her. Wouldn't be surprised if she ended up being a pilot herself eventually :) Really looking forward to an inevitable part 3!
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 9 жыл бұрын
Martin Fiala Glad you enjoyed it! I have a fear of hits as well - but only regarding ledges, balconies and cliffs - that sort of thing; I feel this strong urge pulling me to simply step off the edge or something - it is very unsettling. But in a plane when I have wings I'm good.
@Case_
@Case_ 9 жыл бұрын
I've heard about this urge to step off high places and I always thought that's another issue entirely :) I certainly don't feel any urges to step off, more like step back (where possible) ;) I feel more or less fine when there's some solid ground under my feet (meaning cliffs and such), even though I'd rather not get too close to the edge, but once I'm somewhere where there's a significant enough gap under my feet between what I'm standing on and the ground, I always get the feeling like the platform's gonna break off and I'll fall. I even have that in elevators sometimes. Not in airliners, though, I guess they feel solid enough for me to feel comfortable, and also the knowledge of how wings and lift work helps. I even enjoy looking out the window quite a lot. The only time I don't feel comfortable in an airliner is when there's some turbulence and the plane suddenly drops for a moment ;) But I also know that pilots actually can have my kind of fear of heights, as strange as it may sound to me. My girlfriend is a glider pilot, so I sorta know a few pilots personally, and a surprising number of them do feel the same fear of heights as I do, which for them usually goes away as soon as they sit behind the stick in the plane. If human mind isn't the most unexplainable thing there is, I don't know what is :)

Wow...that was an amazing episode to watch. Oddly, it was so engaging that it doesn't seem long enough. It left me wanting just a bit more, but at the same time I really enjoyed the 'show'. Reema was just amazing and with her calm attitude and cogent explanation of how airplanes fly before getting into the simulator and then doing what was necessary to explain things that MJ would 'get'. Just superb...it would astound me if she isn't an instructor in high demand. Of course, after this video.... Nice job all around and keep up the great work!

Good evening sir! I watched MJ's flight experiences this evening for the first time, and I was very impressed with your approach! I'm also a private pilot and have been flying for about three years now in addition to my A&P and IA. Your videos reminded me of some of my first lessons! I'll be sure to share these with my friends, and I'll be following MJ as she continues facing her fear of flying. If you think about it, please send my kudos, and my best regards! Happy New Year! -RD

Another great episode!! Reema seems like such a wonderful instructor. I love how patient she is and how well she explains things. I can't wait to see more episodes!! I know the camera is scary but Im she looked pretty comfortable to me. She'll get use to it more and more I'm sure.

***** I will definitely be considering Reema. I met her briefly about a month ago. So my flight training has been slow going due to holidays and weather but I'll be back at it again by mid Jan. Originally my plan was to start in the spring but I got really anxious to start ASAP ;) My next lesson should be on Ex 6-9 Straight & Level, Climbs, Descents, Turns.

weatherandsky Awesome - I look forward to hearing about your training! Just be sure to enjoy and don't get caught up worrying too much about how you're performing - it will seem over whelming at times - you'll have "brain mush" as MJ experienced - but you'll get through it.

Hey ***** thanks for the encouragement! I know when I had my first real lesson I felt relatively relaxed for the flying part (partly due to my gliding) but not so much for the taxiing LOL... I was horrible at that part ;) I am expecting some good and bad days no worries...hopefully Dennis is up for the challenge ha haa. He has been really good and patient with me. ------ BTW I just realized that the other cool thing about this video is that by featuring two women involved in aviation it could help to encourage other women and/or girls that have pondered this field as a career or hobby. There is such a strangely low percentage of women in aviation when you compare to other science and technical fields.
@FlightChops

weatherandsky For sure! A huge part of why I wanted to make this video was to feature empowered women in aviation.

Where is part 3!! I wish my instructor was like Reema. She did a great job taking MJ into an engine out scenario demonstrating how the plane will continue to fly as expected. I'm looking for more of these fearful passenger videos to better prepare myself for my own encounters with fearful flyers. Thanks for the video!

What an excellent way to help overcome a fear of flying ! MJ actually looked like she was enjoying the experience (a bit at least). Do you think that with some more sim experience, she might progress to a real light aircraft ? That would make a great multi-part mini series.

I'm really enjoying your fear of flying "series" and hope others who have this fear can profit from your videos! But I had to smile a bit when Reema cut the power and then had to put it back in because they'd have never made that field ;-)
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 9 жыл бұрын
Dominik Schreiber Heh, yeah I guess, I hadn't really thought about judging the glide they were on, as I know what Reema was doing was more about simply showing MJ the plane can still fly just fine with out an engine... And it was also because the sim "crashes" by default when you touch the ground anywhere other than the runway - it's sort of lame in that regard, it would be cool if you could "try" an off airport landing.
Use these four R's to get over your fear of flying
