It’s good to see that somebody else went through the struggles as well and you obviously have received your instrument rating since this was filmed so I to have faith that I will work through these struggles and receive my instrument rating soon. Thank you for all the time and effort you take Making these informative and entertaining videos.

This is AWESOME video. I'm about 20 hours into my IR training, so I felt your pain. Actually, you did a FANTASTIC job for having been off training for a year. Stuff will come back quickly, I'm sure. I can SO relate to the mental overload. One is thinking of so many things at once, but you did a great job of keeping it glued together. I have to say, being an armchair observer, I knew you were going to be in trouble on that inbound turn with a 51 knot wind busting at your tail. But it's exactly stuff like this training that get you to think the next time "Hey I'm gonna have to somehow extend my self on the protected side so I have enough room to make the inbound turn without getting my butt handed to me." I SO want to see part 2. Keep the excellence coming!

Great Video! Keep up the good work! I am a CFII. I am working with a friend to get his instrument rating. Bought a VIRB recently and have been experimenting on how to make videos that help the learning process. You've given me some great ideas. I wish I had all of he knowledge you have to make a great presentation like this. What a great tool to show someone before a lesson on holding! These tools make the learning process so much simpler. Saves lots of time in the airplane when you can watch someone else struggle with the process of learning the complexities of holding in wind. Time is money. Thanks again!

I've said it before but I love these videos and now so does my daughter. In fact I'm commenting from my room in the Arakur Hotel, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina where I'm taking a much needed vacation. I'm IFR rated/IFR current and loved the video. It brought me back to my instrument training and the feeling of trying to control my brain from exploding all while processing inbound headings, reciprocal headings, offset headings, outbound/inbound times and entry techniques of a hold. Great job for having been away from IFR training so long. Definitely the hardest training I've ever done but incredibly satisfying. Great use of cloud ahoy to help the viewer visualize your course. The production quality is outstanding and I can't wait to watch the second half. Keep up the great work!

Really awesome video, actually a great resource for me as a CFI-I to watch Dennis train and note the things he says, does, doesn't say, doesn't do, etc. Holds can be tough to teach due to the limited time to communicate such a bulk of knowledge, especially with a strong wind aloft. Excellent job! One tip that I'm sure Dennis mentioned to you in the debrief but wasn't mentioned in the video - try doubling your wind correction angle for the outbound leg. Reference the second lap around, beginning at 15:55. Where you decided to make the 15 degree correction for the outbound (same as inbound), you achieved a track merely parallel to the inbound course. By doubling the wind correction to 30 degrees (265 in this case), you will actually fly farther into the protected side and thus give yourself room to have the massive turn radius on the inbound turn at 17:40 and roll out exactly on the inbound course. Looks like you are having an incredible amount of fun! Best of luck to you! I just found your channel this afternoon and immediately subscribed. Looking forward to more.
@FlightChops9 жыл бұрын
Luke Gerst Thanks - it is so awesome to hear that CFIs are enjoying my stuff. But do be sure to keep in mind that this video is edited down to under 20 minutes from over 3 hours worth of briefing and in flight training... so many nuances of Dennis' work was likely lost in editing. And as you pointed out, the out bound wind correction tip doesn't come across clearly - thanks for making note of that!

My favorite part of the video at about 18:40 your instructor says "Patience Skywalker"!! The editing with CloudAhoy and you matching it cockpit video was a pretty slick idea. It's crazy how much you were blown into the unprotected side of the hold! That wind, man. Once of my saving graces during IFR training was a wrist watch. Even though being in a NAV III cockpit, it was a huge help being able to just glance at my wrist without having to go hunting for the clock. Can’t wait until the next one!

The side by side edits with ForeFlight track logs on CloudAhoy and the cockpit footage is great. These are gradually going from good to great. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with hours of suffering through edits and post production BS. Keep it up sir. Well done as usual.

Don Abney Haha - yes, hours of suffering is one way of putting how this edit felt... It would have been hard enough even if I hadn't lost the sound on the first flight of which I needed to use footage from. Another enjoyable video. Judging by the number of comments you have generated with this single IFR video I would say you are on to something that so many of us want to experience. As a long time supporter of your work through Patreon I can't wait to see your next video. I truly wish you had enough sponsorship money to allow you to do this full time and keep the videos coming once a week instead of twice a month. I am right around your same level of IFR training and Dennis gave me the same advise as you. We need to have some consistency in our training otherwise what we learn today is easily forgotten by our next lesson. I edited my first GoPro video the other day. I realize you are in that industry but I take my hat off to you. It took me 2 weeks to edit down 2 hours of footage into 20 minutes. It's as basic as basic can be. I feel your efforts whenever you post a new video. Thumbs up to your crew. I realize this is a team effort.

Stephen Robinson Thanks so much for this great comment, and the continued support Stephen! It is really cool that we're sharing the same instructor! maybe we can compare notes, and do some studying for the written together - that is my biggest weakness - I am a poor student when it comes to book work - I've never been good at that. I am using the Areocourse IFR workbook as well as the Air Command Weather manual (and workbook) AND I have a pretty cool App that has a zillion INRAT sample questions - of course that's only useful as an augmentation to book work - not a replacement :)

You asked for feedback regarding the length of the video for the content; No, yer good. I got to the end and you gave a nice cliffhanger effect. I want to see part II. IFR can be difficult to watch dry, but the instruction environment gives it it's own sense of drama and, I will have to assume at some point, resolution. We try and give this sort of contrast in any art form, from writing music to writing novels to cutting film. You always have an element of emotion in your videos that, be it frustration, genuine enthusiasm or unbridled victory and success, is the reason you've been so successful. You're ability to story tell while being the on-camera talent makes me wonder if there's not a possibility of teaming up with your sponsors to produce an actual training series at some point with you as the host working with their qualified instructors. I'm sure Canada is probably similar to the U.S. in regard to having to be careful not to get paid for the flying, but being paid as the film maker and talent shouldn't be a terrible way to get around that while their team of CFI's do the "professional aviation" stuff during filming. Might be a helluva way to finance the channel's future and have you making a good living doing it what you love. I'd buy.
@FlightChops9 жыл бұрын
eljuano28 Thanks SO much for this awesome comment! It is very rewarding to hear this sort of thing, confirming that I am succeeding at what I am trying to do - it is a tough balance of engaging story telling while also trying to maintain solid technical content. You are correct regarding the revenue stream model: I am careful to be sure that any time it is even possible that I might be acting as a "film maker" while in flight, I am not PIC - such as in the case of this flight. For other simpler shoots that I do alone, I am a pilot simply running "set it and forget it" GoPros, recording a flight I'd have done regardless, and the footage is primarily for self analysis - if I find something worth sharing upon review, I then snap into "film maker mode" after the fact and pay myself for the editing time. But yes, we do hope to make it bigger and better and get more sponsors on board! Loving these type of videos!! Keep them up even though it's not for training purposes I learnt a bit of information I never knew about holding patterns! Keep it up IFR is challenging but you can learnt pretty fast! Love all your videos and hope you can remember all of it this time! All the best

Not boring, and not too long. Just getting back into it after a long dry spell, I am not sure I would choose such a challenging situation, but the video was far more interesting because you did. FWIW, I work overseas, so there were lapses of 8-10 months between my three attempts at the IFR rating (that I now hold). When I go back in June, I plan on spending many sessions with my instructor coming back up to speed on it.

Well I mean't to get to bed by 10:00, but now it's more like 10:20. Haha Great video Steve, we're both working on IFR right now, so that was super helpful.

I'm trying to nail mine down before the Fly-In season starts (mid April). I'm just about finished with the test prep and will be taking the written fairly soon (I hope).

Too short for me if anything! lol Another awesome production, bud. You're really doing some great things with this channel... Man, crazy winds huh?! Looks like you're doing fine, it is a LOT to manage and there's so much your brain has to keep up with especially in training. IFR can kick your ass and make you feel like you worked a 12 hr day after only 2 hours. I haven't flown in a while and I don't know how long it'll be before I do again so I absolutely love watching these, being such an aviation geek. Until next time...

Like the humility you have about your self and glade to see someone willing to except their mistakes. I have trained more than enough IFR pilots who don't have the humility to realize that I will not alway be sitting next to them when the shit hits the fan.

tsvkwilson Thanks! Yeah, I try really hard to stay humble and I'm glad you see it coming across in the videos.

Awesome video man, I really appreciate what your doing with this channel. I'm currently working on my PPL with about 15 hours so far, Once I plan on getting a tailwheel rating and an instrument rating! This is mainly base on your video, thanks for the quality vieos, I have lots of fun watching them!

Cool to see that you're coming to San Carlos in June! That's my hometown and I still live fairly close by. If you have a chance, spend a few hours at the hiller aviation museum, you won't regret it.

Awesome! yeah - we're working hard to make that trip happen - I wanna do it with my crew though... so it means a pretty good sized budget is required... but we have a fair bit of time to get it sorted...

Thanks for the great video - I think the length was perfect; IFR is a lot more complicated and seeing it from a rusty intermediate skill level is right where my interest level lies. Good luck.

Way to go Skywalker! ;) This was fantastic! It's got a story, drama and a real comedian as FI! Not to mention highly educational. I loved it. All the different cam posits make an excellent edit possible. Was it too long? No, just good enough. Any longer on this story would exhaust my attention without a kicker-up some sort. This is like real pro work. My two cents as an ex-cameraman.

I'd be quite happy seeing the whole IFR thing in on big movie! :-) I know you said somewhere that 20 mins is your limit, but I'd be happy to watch IFR comedy for an hour or so! :-) Great work, dude!

Monkey Flies Plane Thanks! I don't have it in me to make longer ones anyway - so it'll be an on going series - and that way I can also sprinkle in other content in between to keep it interesting - the Stearman is coming soon!

I must admit, I've been editing an hour long video (nothing flying related) for the last few months, so I know how much work goes into just a very basic video! Regardless, looking forward to part-2!

love your CFII...keep doing these!!! :) I'm still about a year away from doing my IFR but I think I'm going to just crank through the exam and then do one of those 2 week boot camps. Great video man - keep em' coming! (hour long videos work for me!!)

***** yeah he is really good. Love his demeanor and the fact that he's not just talking all the time. If I was in your area I'd be using him for sure. :) Good luck on the IFR! How do you find it using the older GPS? Can't tell exactly what's in your plane but we have an older Garmin 300XL and I've flown in planes with the 430W and it appears to be a night and day difference. I guess coupled up with ForeFlight and the geo-referenced charts and such, it's manageable...
@FlightChops9 жыл бұрын
Ken Lince I'm still too inexperienced with any of the panel mount GPS units to comment on that. I fly so many different planes as a rental pilot that Ive not committed to learning one. So my VFR navigation has been with paper charts and iPad... But yeah - I need to figure out my IFR work flow...

Great Video!!! Tip that has pretty much always worked for me in strong wind: Multiply inbound correction by THREE for outbound correction. (This accounts for the fact that the wind messes up your track in the inbound turn, while allowing to maintain a standard rate turn)
@FlightChops9 жыл бұрын
GeneralAviationGuru Thanks yes, we'll be addressing that technique in an other video - for this one Dennis didn't get into that with me as I was already task saturated....

Good stuff. Not too long at all. I'm IFR rated/current and this is a good example of how easy it is to get behind in the aircraft. Thanks for posting this and i'm looking forward to part 2! Makes me want to go do some approaches and holds! Thanks for the tip on the holding pattern app. This still can be confusing at times....
