I'd think an even better title might be 'FEAR of screwing up', as many musicians encounter 'blank' moments when performing. This concept you are bringing to the practice arena not only helps with scale and muscle memory, but teaches the brain to be able to 'idle' within an idea as you figure out a new place to go. When performing, I quite often use bends (especially the half-step variety) and milk the livin' bejeezus out of it while figuring out where to go next. Being able to pause like that makes your performance 'breathe' - just like we pause when speaking. Or typing.

Just like playing with a band - if you get lost, NEVER stop. Keep playing it out and find your way to a reset point and continue from there.

Ian, you are very quickly becoming the source of the most pertinent info for guitar players on you tube. Everything you teach is so useful and has such an impact on players of all levels I would imagine. Thanks for everything you have taught me. Kevin O'Rourke

P.s.. i presume a 'barb' is something that isnt in the pentatonic scale for eg ..a bum note ?.. but never come off the rails is great advice. Is it fair to say its better to prioritise the rhythm and stay on the rails like you say.?✌❤

Yeah, helpful Ian. As I was doing the lesson, instead of doubling up on the same note on the triplet, I played it and bent it, which sounded good on the 4 and flat 7

As a "former" drummer, one thing I thought of was going between two strings using a paradiddle where you move the accent each time.

Hey Ian, Would you mind making a video about figuring songs out by ear and interval training and so?! And I’d like to see your approach to three note per string scales as well :) Thanks and lots of love!

Hi....been a while since I have visited your channel...I will keep up with your channel as you are too good a teacher to miss again! I will start practicing this technique now. A couple of questions: I pretty much can play the A pentatonic scale in the CAGED system up and down the neck fairly well and can now improvise somewhat with a backing track. If I take the A Pentatonic position and slide down string #6 from root note A to root note G or F notes, if I follow the same CAGED pattern from there, does that make it a G or F minor pentatonic and with some note changes make them into G or F major scales? Thanks! Oh, one other thing, I usually start out on the A note as root and many times change to a C as the root, but still maintain the structure of the A pentatonic CAGED system. Is that ok? Thanks again!
