Who else has a thunderstorm right now? I can't handle it. A few years back, lightning struck the house next to us. My vision turned white, the noise was horrifyingly loud. I have witnessed lightning at a very far distance in my childhood,but the thundering sound was so piercing to my ears that it still gives me nightmares whenever thunderstorms occur. When I was young, I was on a boat and all of the sudden there was this GIANT thunderstorm that was VERY close to us. Long story short, we were on the water for a very long time after the storm started, because we got lost. It was terrifying. And ever since then I have been deathly afraid of thunderstorms.

Julie Inch I had a bad one where the whole house shook and things fell, it sounded like a nuke outside my window, and the flash was bright even when I closed my eyes and hid under the covers! I was so scared when it happened and I was fine with thunderstorms before that severe one happened. So now when I hear even a normal one I get the same fear feeling because I'm worried that might happen again!!

I have overcome the fear of tornadoes, now that I know what to look for. But lightning....lightning terrifies me. When I see a flash, my heart pounds so hard in my chest that it hurts. My anxiety began when my family was out at a drive in and a thunderstorm started and we were forced to go home. While going home, however, lightning was flashing around us literally every other second. And these weren't the streaks of lightning that remain in the clouds. They were hitting the ground all around us. We could not see the road because the lightning kept creating those blotches you get in your eyes after looking into a bright light, and the rain was pounding. I had never really prayed before, but I was so terrified that we wouldn't make it home that I silently prayed right there in the vehicle. When we got home, we found that the tree beside our house had been struck by lightning and a large portion of it lay in the middle of the road. The power was out also. I know the fear can be overcome, but I don't know how to. Unlike tornadoes, lightning is unpredictable. And that terrifies the crap out of me.

I learned what to look for. If a storm is approaching, you want to look for clouds like this: vermilionweather.com/wallshelf/wallcloud.jpg Not all wall clouds have tornadoes, but all tornadoes form inside the wall clouds. As long as you don't see a wall cloud, you are fine. There is no need to be afraid. And if you do see one, look at the direction it is going. As long as it isn't going toward you, you are also fine. If it is getting closer, however, yeah, it is okay to be afraid. If you have a basement, if the tornado is a category 1-2, bucker down. If the tornado is a category 4 or 5, get the heck out of its way. It is risky to be out in a storm, but even riskier to stay in the wake of tornadoes that large and powerful. Category 3, choose either, but know that there is still a lot of risk. And if you live in a trailer, get out of the way no matter what the category is. All of them will do a good amount of harm.

I suffer from lilasophobia, which is extreme fear of tornadoes. I wish I can overcome this phobia, but its impossible. This phobia has effected me so much, it interferes with daily life. I now find myself checking the weather everyday to ensure there are no tornado warnings. If I see a thunderstorm in the forecast, or a severe thunderstorm warning it makes me shakey. I assume that every single thunderstorm will cause tornadoes. Even if I am in one, I find myself checking the sky to look for any unusual clouds or a funnel. Even in normal weather, if I see any weird shaped clouds, I think its a forming funnel. This fear of mine is really severe and I wish I didn't have it.

It's a beautiful day here in Oklahomabut in 2 days there's a slight risk for severe weather and instead of enjoying today, I'm preparing for Tuesday. Where to go? Where will my daughter be? When she starts school, do they have a safe zone? Should I call into work on severe weather days? What if I'm on my way home from work with my daughter trying to beat the storm and my car breaks down? The weatherman can be wrong. How do I trust them when one told us to "head south" and get out of the path just to hit traffic and go into labor then, another one said the sirens were false sirens and 1 minute later said seek shelter. What if I trusted him enough to not seek shelter when I seen the tornado forming? I could be dead. What will happen if my house is destroyed and we have nowhere to go? ....this is all in one day and then it's time to get ready for the next system in a couple of days. And this is what it's like living in Oklahoma from March-June-ish. So, sorry but your sales gimmick and cd's cannot help.

Here are some tips of how i removed my fear: Tip 1#: BE PREPARED AND DO NOT FEAR AND TELL YOUR BRAIN TO NOT FEAR ANYTHING DURING THAT TIME,THINK OF SOMETHING ELSE RATHER THAN THE THUNDER Tip 2#: If you're scared of the sound, don't worry, the sound happens in the air only! So if a lightning strucks by close it will be just like as if it struck far away. Tip 3#: DO NOT COME CLOSE TO ANY POWER PLUGS! This is very dangerous if the thunderstorm is a large storm and can last for hours. Just don't come close since the phones have enough negative electricity that maybe even the lightning struck above your house,your phone can electrocute you! Tip 4#: try to stay calm and relax, pretend like it's a happy day and try to go to sleep or read a book as if you will be completely distracted! :) Tip 5#: Just don't overthink it,thinking about it too much causes the brain to fear and may give trauma to you. (some people had trauma near me because thunderstorms happen maybe every 4 weeks in germany in my city) Tip 6# Last and final tip is, just think how cool a lightning can be, with it's powerful energy! Like WOW! I'm currently during a storm right now,and I'll be hearing from you guys later,bye!.

Hearing possible chance of tornados or a tornado warning dispite my state is impossible to hace a tornado in (due to large rivers and such dispite being right in tornado valley) We've rarely had a tornado formation or touchdown in decades but heaeing those siresn,those horrible sirens drive me instantly into a panic attack..as if the world is gonna end and we are dying.

STORY TIME this fear started for me when i was 10. Me my mom stepdad and sister went all the way to my sisters basketball game. (shes 12) On the way home there was a severe thunderstorm warning. Then i got really freaked out. I was in the car with my sister and mom. and my stepdad was in his car. Anyway my sister was hungry so we stopped at sheetz. Then when we parked there was a TORNADO WARNING. Then i was really freaked out. i begged my mom to just drive home. But i was forced to go inside. I just wanted to go home. Then we got our food. on the way home i was still very nervous. Then we made our way into my moms hometown. (not saying it) Then all of a sudden on the right side of the town, there were big amounts of wind coming at the left side. for some reason my mom turned to the right. then my heart started pounding SO HARD. My mom stopped behind this building because she thought that the building would protect us from the wind. Little did we know, it did. so we drove all the way back home. At the end of the day, my sister had a sleepover with her best friend, and i went out to dinner with my parents. (we went to longhorn) after that at least we were all alive and safe, but after that, NOTHING WAS THE SAME.

I am really scared of lightning, because one day me and my friend were waiting for a bus, and it was not raining so i thought, it is just some gray clouds. But then i saw nothing but white for a 1\10 of a second, i was confused for a sec until a loud loud thunder struck, i was just stiff, that changed me, now when i see some clouds gathering up, i instantly try to get somewhere ASAP! Actually where I live in Latvia there are not any tornadoes thank god, no earthquakes but thunderstorms are just in summer so that is the time that i go outside when it is blue sky!

I am afraid of storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and just clouds in general. I always have a tornado plan, and I don't like going to buildings that don't have a basement. Instead of paying attention in class I always stare out the window and observe the clouds. I hate wide open spaces, because they remind me that a tornado could gain speed and become stronger, so I try to not go on the highway as much as possible. I've been trying to find ways to get rid of my phobia, and this video gave me hope.

I have had lilapsophobia since 5th grade because we had just done an extreme weather project and I did it on tornadoes. I learned a lot and got slightly afraid not to the point of phobia but that part is coming. On the same years christmas CHRISTMAS DAY (how unlucky) boom it all started at 9:35 a whole day of severe storms, supercells, and tornado warnings. None of them hit us but when the day was over my ass was scared off and that is how I got lilapsophobia.

Last month we had a straight line winds storm at 2 am, followed by thunderstorms all day long. I've always loved thunderstorms my whole life. I'm 48 yrs old and this fear is new to me. I find myself checking the weather all the time. Even gray clouds gives me anxiety now. We are supposed to have severe weather tomorrow. I'm trying to find videos that will help with this fear. Check out the channel The Speakmans. They have one on how to overcome fear of thunder and lightning. It is really good!

For me, rain is cool and I don’t mind it. Thunder on the other hand, it gets my adrenaline going in a bad way if you know what I mean. It makes me feel like the world is going to explode even though I know it’s not.

When I was a kid I used to understand weather in languages. For sunny days happy/fun, ordinary rain and snow sad/sleepy or even bored at times, thunderstorms/tornadoes angry in the sky when clouds are darkened.

I'm still scared of storms since 8 (Which was my first thunderstorm O_o) everytime when it rains or it's very cloudy I get scared... my computer is next to my window so I peek through the blinds to see if a storm is coming.. Earlier it rained and it SCARED me with the gray clouds. But when I went out it was barely raining so I feel happy :D

Here because I'm nowhere near the Carolinas, yet am so anxious about stupid Florence! I live in a place that has tornadoes, though I've never seen one myself (I make sure not to). My boyfriend is in New Jersey. The sky is darker there right now, but he's just close enough to see it and not be affected by it. Whenever anyone tells me anything storm-related (minor or major), I get mad. I choose anger over fear because at least with anger I'm doing something, and it's okay for me to not be okay with people dying because of stupid things like tornadoes and hurricanes. They're not worth dying for! I have noticed though, that usually it's the people who stay that get killed by hurricanes. Tornadoes don't really have an evacuation plan. Your basement will do I guess. One person died from a tornado while being in the safest place in the house, following all the safety recommendations. I really do hate these things. Lightning is fine with me, because they can be useful for zapping some pollution away. High winds, hail, flooding-totally unnecessary. I cannot see any benefits to them objectively. It might encourage people to come together, but it shouldn't have to happen this way for people to come together. I have a high amount of empathy for the people affected by Florence. I think of what it would be like if I had to evacuate, then come to my house with a large amount of damages. It's horrible and totally unnecessary! I just want them to not exist anymore. I want to no longer go through an emotional rollercoaster every single time. I'm sick of them, and I'm sick of being so bothered by it.

April showers, kill any flowers. It’s thundering, not raining, honestly for me a first. I have anxiety, and discussed with friends with the same disorder that we all fear things that we surely know won’t harm us. Like: the dark, storms, needles, bugs, EVEN DEAD BUGS. I always panic during storms, and I have always had a fear of them. Even with a noise machine. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, I just wanted to say it.

For some reason, I don't get as afraid of storms whenever I'm with my friends. I usually am the most afraid whenever I'm at my own house and it happens. I had a tornado hit my town last year, and I think it traumatized me.

I was traumatized by it when I was 8. I was at the beach and my mom wouldn't listen and leave the beach. The storm finally got to us and I was bawling my eyes out. I've haven't gotten over it yet and I'm now 14

heres how it is..and LIKE if you can relate. since i was little as much i can remember ive been scared of storms at first because of tornados, but as i grew older it gotten worse to thunderstorms i cant stand it. I would not get out the house sometimes because of lightning strikes. Eventually as the years and months pass by ofcourse..it gotten worse. from the clouds down to severe wether. i cant stand seeing irregular clouds in the sky if i feel just a bit change of wind i freak out. I've have a lighting phobia. When I was a kid I use to cry, scream and just try to hide. But now as an adult I think I educated myself and although I'm still afraid it's much much much better. I thought I was the only one for a long time lol. Wish I has KZbin back then 😭😂

people who live in Pennsylvania don't worry we NEVER get tornadoes and if there was a severe thunderstorm it would just be rain with little rumbles of thunder and small lightning or we never get it

when I was little, we had a huge thunderstorm and the sirens sounded when I was in my bus and then we had to transport to the highschool that day because there was a possible tornado watch, to calm me down, there were ballerinas practicing and waiting for the storm to be over. When my mom picked me up, we went home right away and we had to go to the basement. and I have had a huge phobia of storms ever since. and yet, I dream of being a storm chaser for some reason....I even have panic attacks...

And what to say to someone that has experienced lightning VERY close? I've been exposed to lightning a few times. When I say "exposed" I mean that the hair on my body rose to attention, and felt the shockwave of sound. Not a fan unless strikes are FAR away.

Had the fear of tornadoes since I was like 6 or 7 and still have not completely overcome it. Not sure why I have this fear, I live in New York where we don’t have tornadoes and if we do it’s extremely rare, I think it’s just that there’s always a very slight possibility.

I can’t stand with thunder, or even loud sounds in general.. :/ When my school has a fire drill I always get scared and sweaty because I don’t like the loud sound. Same with thunder... I just try to get things to distract me. It interferes with school work as well because I can’t do it with the fear of thunder rolling in a thunderstorm.
