There is so much fine detail in the original studio recording of this song that it makes a great sound-check for fine-tuning a listening space or room monitors. If you can get all the sparkly chimey parts standing out and feel the bass drop in the middle of the song, you know you're where you need to be.

I 'figured it out' in standard tuning, but the droning strings in the open tuning give in that airy, jangly sound... well, that and a $7,000 guitar!

First off, very well done, I too enjoyed the fact that you played through and then circled back to offer some instruction. I was doing my best to avoid the tuning conversation because I think we all understand that in typical David fashion, there are multiple guitars and likely multiple tunings present on the recording. So with that in mind, I am not sure that either typical open G tuning or modified open G is entirely the wrong answer. Speaking from my own experimentation, I tried tuning the E string all the way down to a low G but that was to deep, muddy and unstable given how loose the string became. I then risked the added tension on the nut, bridge and string by tuning the E up to a G and honestly that sounded right in my opinion. Having the G drone on during the climbs up to the12th fret seemed to fill out the sound nicely. Not saying this is correct just saying that with only 1 acoustic playing, it fills out the sound nicely.

If you need a little bit of help: for the part that goes all the way up the guitar, his fingers are on [A and G string (3+5) of standard tuning] or [G and G string (3+5) of open G tuning] on the 4th fret then they go: 4 fret 5 fret 7 fret 9 fret 11 fret 12 fret And then he bars the 5th fret (strum down, up) and then bar 3rd fret (strum down down)

You did a great job on this video. I especially like the fact that you play it all the way through, then get into the meat of technical aspects, but without a lot of extraneous blabbering. Your comment should be submitted to be part of a "CF Martin" marketing program. I enjoy listening to James James playing any guitar he chooses. He is a very particular guy, and usually chooses to play whatever guitar is best suited to the song, or whichever guitar has his attention at that moment. And James... great song, great playing, and great lesson. Cheers, and all the best to you.

It's open G... This song, along with being my favorite Floys song, is how I discovered open tunings. I was trying to play it according to the tabs, but it sounded crazy. Then I looked and noticed it was in Open G. I had to look up how to tune to it, this was long before the internet. Amazing song. I am a "decent" 30 year player, but watching you play it, I am pretty close. Thanks...
@gl360510 күн бұрын
It's open G but the low E string is tuned up to G too. It's a lot of tension on that string though. I'd prefer not to do that to my bridge. It can be played in regular Open G though..which is how this guitar is tuned.. I think.
