I am an aircraft mechanic and some have a similar air/oil separator. The difference is the drain plug on bottom is actually a nipple or fitting which has a hose connecting it to the crankcase so oil drains back to the sump. It would be easy enough to do since you have the pipe plug at the bottom of your fill tube. You could remove plug and install a 90 degree fitting and plump the catch can directly to it.

Mr. Christopher this is literally the best mod you could possibly do to a mud mower.

I think you may have forgotten one thing: Gravity. Since you mounted the catch can inlet so high, I think it would take either high pressure from the PCV or a failed PCV valve to collect much oil in the catch can. You may want to think about lowering the can down...

I used a spare plastic mightyvac brake bleeder container as my catch can on a Honda ch80 4poke scooter. lid has a rubber seal and is air tight, as well as an inlet and outlet ports built into the lid. works superb.

plumb the catch can drain with a shut off down to the engine block drain so when you change oil, just hit the valve and drain the can too. also could drain the can back into the block that way.

Wouldn't the can be too high causing oil to fight gravity? I know small engines can't produce that much vacuum

Looks good! Oh and don't worry about being higher than port,, whole objective is not go in carb,, all that will happen is catch can will catch less
@MrTheHillfolk

It doesn't look too bad. If anything , bigger is better on pcv hoses. I'd try and get something that's like 1/2id hose, changing those fittings on the tank would suck tho. Ya just want a large area for the oil and blowby air to seperate,and naturally oil is heavier than air so it'll usually fall to the bottom inside a large container

Sweet mods...seemingly effortless install! You should do an update vid after some nice romping and show how much oil you end up draining out, if any.
@UnitCrane514
@UnitCrane514 10 жыл бұрын
I see a major flaw in that design. Its higher than the carb so the oil has to travel uphill to go the can, which it wont do because that engine doesn't produce enough vacuum. You don't need to run that blow by air back into the carburetor. Close off the port in the intake and run the crank case side of the hose into a sealed tin can with 3 or 4 1/16" holes in the bottom. Stick a filter element in the can so junk cant go up through the holes in the bottom and your golden. Its total loss and will just drip on the ground...but so what, its a tractor. 2 stroke Detroit Diesels have a breather like this (just a pipe no can or filter on the end), its a fail proof simple design.

@Fearlessfront 10 жыл бұрын
Thats all fine and good on a semi-truck, but occasionally go under water (and sometimes stall) and that would backfeed the system with moisture... The whole point here was to build a sealed system that doesn't leak oil all over the environment. I'm not really concerned about the oil not making it to the catch can at all, as long as it doesn't make it to my carb i'm happy.

On Cat semi engines they have one of those with a hose connected to the drain and the hose goes back to the crank case so you never have to empty it. I think with the way you have it higher than the carb it won't pump the oil up there but it will kinda sit in the line and gurgle on it. Its all theory just try it out on the track again

nice...and looks pretty industrial [in a good way]. for a couple bucks, you could get some braided steel sleeves to slide over the lines. would be helpful in case the lines are rubbing someplace, but would look cool, too. looking at this, it is very similar to the oil catch system on some of the older motorcycles i have ridden. this would also give you some idea how much moisture is being trapped in your crankcase, since removing that moisture is one of the reasons for having a PCV system on an engine. definitely a must-have if you do a lot of leaning on curves, or just happen to dump what-ever 4-stroke bike or ATV you happen to be on....not that i have EVER dumped a bike. LOL

It's being used beyond it's designed purposes. Cornering forces and over revving beyond stock have added up to cause a problem. I still think a little deflector on the inside of the rocker box cover would also help so the splash doesn't hit that disc directly and draw oil in so easily

Thanks Fearless!...I would never had known what that was or it's purpose. Great vid! Question: Is the volume and/or pressure of "splooge" exiting the pcv going to be sufficient to scale the incline and length of your tubing and make it to the catch can? And that which doesn't reach the can, will it be problematic for it to drain back into the pcv while the tractor sits idle? OOppps...never mind! I read where you already addressed this issue! Again, Great vid!

you could have just connected some of that hard line to the PCV valve and run that so it dumps somewhere where it won't be exposed to water or mud like coming out the side of the hood. Your chanel is the greatest ever, but you spent twenty dollars on that new fn can. I see you can weld too so I wish you would take that shinny can off and get your twenty dollars back, then get a piece of old pipe from off of something else and hammer one side closed and weld shut. Tap a drain plug if needed. then weld two small pipes in the top, hammer as closed as needed first. Also be sure to put gobs of JB quick weld somewhere as that's the American way man. I wish I could help as it looks like so much fun. I would also like to see major sponsors take more of an active interest in supporting activities like your channel as you could use more motors, frames, pro-tools, compressors, explosives and cameras to add to the fun. Just thought explosives would be fun but not necessary.

Do you know what condition the valve seals are in? I had a go kart with an old Briggs from a tiller and the seals were wearing so it had the usual smoke on startup but when I took it around my track it really blew smoke. I put new seals on it and it stopped the smoke. I should have just put a whole new engine on it though because I stuck a bearing on the crank and it wollered out the block lol

Yea I just got a 20hp v twin and wanna swap my 12 flatty. I know the 20hp mower we cut the grass with is a very thirsty beast compared to the 12hp. And I bet the transaxles get a lot angrier quickly when you put like 70% more power to it. Who knows, we may like em, or not, and wanna swap back. But I was from the school that more(hp) is always better. I'm just not sure on how long the other parts can take it.

Check out General Transmissions (You Tube and the website) The RS800 is almost as strong as a peerless MST 206 (221 ft-lbs. vs. 225 ft.-lbs.) and is claimed to be a trouble-free transmission with a torque converter setup similar to a snowmobile, scooter, or ATV. Already on Sears and Husqvarna tractors.

for an oil catch can to work properly, its need to be internally baffled with a condensation plate , connections should be placed away from each other, requires air flow over outer housing etc etc.. lot of the L cheapo cans are for cosmetic purpose and have near zero design consideration, like having the lines at the same point makes them very inefficient collecting crank case vapour.
