‘Fears About Safety Of Pakistan’s Nuclear Weapons Not Far-fetched’

NEW DELHI: Questions about the safety of Pakistani nukes are not new but the incidents of last month-vandalism of military installations and street violence by rampaging mobs after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested-have amplified concerns worldwide. The Pakistani military is in charge of day to day deployment of nuclear assets and the army prides itself that its chain of command has always remained intact. But the way the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence was vandalized and the soft attitude on display towards the activists of Imran Khan’s party raises questions about a possible dilution in that chain of command, says Ramanathan Kumar, former Special Secretary of R&AW, India's external intelligence agency. Speaking to StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin. A. Gokhale, Kumar said the Pakistani nuclear command and control structure follows conditional control, in which during times of crisis the authority is quickly delegated to the lower levels.
