💥MAJOR correction - Partition wasn't between Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India but Muslim Pakistan who thought they can't coexist with Hindus and a Secular India comprising of Hindus, Muslims, Christians etc. It is reflected in the present day population of the 2 Nations too. While India today has almost as many Myslims as Pakistan = 200 million... Pakistan's non Muslim population has shrunk from 15% to 1%

My grandfather moved to india with his family after the partition when he was young. They lived in Bangladesh at the time and had to smuggle themselves upriver on a small fishing boat. Their only possessions were my great grandmother’s jewellery and they survived on that and did a few odd jobs for months until my great grandfather got a job at a railway station. They lost their land, homes and all their savings. It was a hard time for everyone.

Indian forces were stopped and instead Pakistan started advancing into Indian territory. India never gained any territory in any war whatsoever. 47, lost half of Kashmir. 65 was stalemate with Indian suffering heavy casualties dispute being 5 times Pakistan forces. 71 even though Bangladesh gained independence, india still never gained any territory instead lost some on western front such as Chamb sector. So get your facts right.

One correction Simon, The "Cold Start Doctrine" genesis lies in the 1987 Operation Brasstacks, conducted under the Indian Army COAS General KV Krishna Rao. It was put on hold in the 90s but in 2001 after Indian Parliament Terror Attack, India mobilized over 700k Troops along the International Border, but it took nearly 2 months to achieve the offensive posturing while Pakistan managed to mobilize 300k of its own troops. After Months of Skirmishes and Artillery Duels, India had to back down (under US Pressure). India's performance in the 2001-02 Border Standoff with Pakistan (codename: Operation Parakram), forced the Indian Armed Forces to re evaluate their strategy and restart the Cold Start Doctrine.

@@naveedhasan5365unless backed into a corner. India is already ruled by parties who have dangerous rhetoric. And they are considered moderate. Pakistan ain't different either. I doubt Pakistan will ever start any war, they'd be rolled in a conventional war. India one day might try to exploit Pakistan's weakness under a different administration. Pakistan has first strike doctrine I think. Moment something bad happens, such as critical infrastructure hit or communication is cut off (which a component military would do as a first thing) they'll most likely launch the nukes. Anyone in their position would. Nowadays Putin for example, if pushed out of Ukraine completely and threatened with his own or family's lives would most likely push button for smaller attacks. Why not, he and his family is going to die, what left for him? Nevermind rogue nations getting nukes, like NK did. Israel losing militarily and getting pushed would push the button too, it's literally their doctrine. So, sleep well, someone mad like Hitler would have pushed the button. Or some idiot US president would have let McArthur nuke China. We are lucky to not live in Fallout world, shouldn't take it for granted.

@Naveed Hasan I did not expect the intricacies and history of the India/Pakistan problem to be explained in a 15 minute video. I dare say the 20 hours you mentioned might not be enough to fully comprehend everything regarding this. Did I say in my comment that I expected to wholly understand the subject of the video? No. I just found it to be lacking in areas compared to some of Simon's other content. I have a dilettante's knowledge of the subject here, and was just hoping for maybe an extra nugget of information. Your assumption is incorrect.

For a comprehensive report from pre-independance till future conflict you have put together a great educational video. Thanks. One can only add ones thoughts or back one of your presumptions. People (globally) forget the Pak Occupied Kashmir region is hilly and forested and there will be barely a few km of gains unless the present inflationary circumstances cause the local population to revolt en masse. Spectacular gains (due to perceived armoured superiority) mean nothing in the Central sector (Rajasthan/Punjab) as the lines of the IB would have to be abided by, post the ceasefire- so to retain the gains, India would have to ensure that politically Pakistan did not exist as a nation but as 4 or 5 new nations. So India would not only have to work with (say the US) to secure the Pak nuclear arsenal BUT also work on creating 4 or 5 potential regional satraps who would step in and create the 'new nations' before the nukes go off or a ceasefire undoes all of what gains India is assumed to have made by D7. India hasn't been particularly brilliant in handling the last air battle by the Kashmir region, amplified by the inability to predict, let alone stop, the 27 fighters that raised Indian in the morning after Balakote. And then to lose a pilot behind enemy lines who disregarded the billion dollar AWACs... This display of lack of vision and utter disregard to the multiple billions spent on modernisation (if pilots continue to disregard and not listen to AWACs) does not look good for India. Small and 'little' as Pak may seem, India has always lost territory where it counted in 65 and 71 before it's logistical might bailed it out. Akhnoor, Chhamb- Jaurian being a prime example. India seems not to realise that they gave up 90000 POWs - because in part the Pak Forces were at the Akhnoor bridge (1971) and held the entire region north(Rajouri, Bhimber, Poonch) hostage. I have tremendous faith in the bravery and spirit of Indian Armed Forces, who would be on the line, but it's when the leadership crosses the ranks of Colonel and moves above that the leadership becomes suspect. Pakistan may be whatever, their men in uniform have always been upto a good fight and I don't see anything ending quick in the next round. A quick exchange of nuclear weapons (say 5 or 6 detonations) would as you say rightly be something more worrisome than any reason to go to war in the first place. Good write up. Cheers.
@Poo_Brain_Horse
@Poo_Brain_Horse Жыл бұрын
Both nations want to avoid war, as the result of nuclear exchange is obviously the end of both nations. So even a(nother) border skirmish is extremely unlikely to escalate far beyond that. Both nations have extensive political connections to prevent such a war. Also the Rutgers study that claims "2 billion" would die from India Pakistan nuclear war was flawed as it models things like volcanic eruptions to simulate climate shifts following a nuclear war. The soot ejected by volcanoes does not quite aerosol the same way as soot ejected by nuclear strikes. Lastly the "2 billion" figure requires 250 100kt bombs which not even India + Pakistan combined have. Both India and Pakistan's delivery systems each cap out at about 40 kt each. The "2 billion die if they go to war" is not only factually wrong, it's blatant scaremongering disinformation. You don't have to lie about nuclear war for people to understand that it's really, really bad.

@tylerwarner7837 Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen much of the video yet, I came to the comments right away but I could personally see it being somewhere close to that bad. It's not that the nukes would do it, they'd kill a ton of people for sure but also the destabilization, rioting, famine and disease that come with disasters of that level, refugee crisis (That's a lot of people moving to next door countries) and then frequently criminal organizations rise to power and that can be a problem for decades. 2 billion is a bit overzealous I think but it would be a ludicrous amount of people. death on a scale humans have never seen before.

As much as the video was great, the reason for partition as always has been mis represented by western channels, indian founding fathers categorically rejected the idea that as pakistan was created on the basis of religion (which actually was the demand of a single party and person i.e jinnah) that what remained shall be a hindu state, india was founded as secular nation for all religions cultures, languages and castes. At the time of independence more muslims decided to live in india than move to pakistan, india still had a greater number pf muslims than pakistan till very recently when pakistan surpassed because of its higher birth ratio and as far as idea goes that religion was biggest problem and not culture, look what happened 24 years after that, bangladesh won its indenpendence after a bloody struggle as even they rejected the idea that a nation can be built solely on the concept of religion

Ah...the age old British strategy of divide and rule classicaly explained by a Brit as a "mere inability of the newly formed and obviously inferior people to govern themsleves". They ruled the subcontinent for 200 years without a major hindu muslim conflict for hells sake. What rational person would create a country with 2 parts on either sides of Another huge country with no direct land connection between those parts, and hope all will go well....They wanted an unstable subcontinent and they got it.... The only comfort for me is that i got to be on the side which is better off for now...

Maybe it wasn't the best way to deal with Indian independence, but blaming the British alone is lazy. The subcontinent wanted independence and they got it fairly quickly after the end of WWII. Don't be stupid. Hindus and Muslims always fought each other since 1191. When Ghori attacked and fought Prithviraj Chauhan. After that it continued for centuries. If you are saying that Battles fought in the name of kings is equalent to the riots in the name of religion, Then you must be delusional...Those were territorial and resource wars. The Mongols attacked Europe not to convert, but to plunder. Even the English came to India to plunder first, convert was just another side mission they had to complete to get support from the home base There were wars in India even before gods of christians and muslims were even born. That doesnt mean India should be fractured along all the boundaries of those kings

I want to correct several things in your history part of the video, which you didnt make very clear, but is very important for an audience to know. 1. While a border was drawn by the British for the partition of India, it was very arbitrary, not only on ground but also theoretically on a map. The British Raj was not entirely ruled directly by the British, but there were also Princely States, where it was acting like a vassal state under the British Empire, where the ruler had all his rights to rule his own kingdom except defense, foreign policy and communications. The partition line was drawn only to divide the provinces that were directly ruled by the British, not the princely states. There means that when the British finally left India, they did not create just 2 new independent states (India and Pakistan), but 567 (2 + 565 princely states) new states. The princely states had a right to either join the newly formed Dominion of India, the Dominion of Pakistan, or remain an independent entity. Now the problem was, some of these princely states happen to be right at the border drawn by the British. The Dominion of Pakistan was initially made up of partitioned Punjab, partitioned Bengal, partitioned Assam, the entire province of Sindh, the province of Balochistan and the Northwest Frontier Province. 2. While the princely states had Hindu or Muslim majorities, their ruler still had the full right to decide who they wanted to join (especially if the state happens to be at the drawn border). Jammu and Kashmir, the region that is of question today, was one of the largest of the 565 princely states and most important, and happens to be right at the border. Pakistan claims the entire state based on its overall Muslim majority, but the Hindu King of J&K wanted to remain an independent state. Pakistan then launched an invasion of the independent Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, which forced the King to accede to India when the Pakistani troops (initially just armed tribesmen) had almost reached Srinagar, the capital, since India wouldnt protect the state with the Indian army unless it acceded. 3. There are many other princely states that have controversies, other than Jammu and Kashmir. Examples: Hyderabad, Junagadh, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Kalat, Travancore, Sikkim. The state of Hyderabad was a Hindu majority state with a Muslim ruler, who did not want to join India despite being landlocked within India and wanted to remain independent. India eventually launched an invasion of Hyderabad, 1 whole year after independence. The Nawab of Junagadh and the Nawab of Bhopal both wanted to join Pakistan, and Junagadh did end up joining the instrument of accesion, despite not actually being near the border at all. In order for Pakistan to actually claim Junagadh being on the other side of the drawn border, he had to convince all the princely states that connect by land to Junagadh to also accede to Pakistan first, each accesion legalising further expansion to the other side of the border. This can be seen when the Nawab of Bhopal (Muslim ruler with Hindu majority) wanted to join Pakistan, Pakistan tried to convince all the sequentially connecting states till Bhopal in Central India (Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, in that order and all Hindu rulers of Hindu majority states) to join Pakistan, offering everything to them in a desperate attempt, but only managing to convince Jodhpur, so the plan failed. All 4 eventually joined India and India invaded Junagadh after a local revolt and held a referendum, where the people overwhelmingly wanted to join India. The Khanate of Kalat, entirely on the Pakistani side of the border, was waiting for an offer from India, but at the end joined Pakistan in duress, after no offer was given by India. India did not have any chance to acquire Kalat anyway, since it was competely encircled by the Dominion of Pakistan with no connecting princely states to the border. It only had the choice of independence or Pakistan. Travancore was a state in the deep south of India facing the Arabian Sea, that wanted to remain independent even after the British left. The King even wrote letters to the British, asking to pressure India into allowing independence for Travancore, but eventually joined India anyway. Sikkim was the last princely state remaining and managed to stay independent till 1975, and finally faced a revolt by the Nepali Hindu majority, who did not like the Sikkimese Buddhist monarchy and opted to join India. The move was also due to the increased threats from China, and finally the last princely state joined India, almost 30 years after the British left. To see the madness that is the princely states accesion to India or Pakistan visually, I highly recommend watching the video "Formation of India and Pakistan" by Ollie Bye.
