Lesson learned: if I wanna piss off Librarian I need to make a horror protagonist who's so unbelievably oblivious to his surroundings that it's comedic but then force the player to walk into the line of danger or say something they shouldn't. Infact not only will they have to, but I'm also going to put in dialog reinforcing the illusion of free choice at play "no I HAVE to do it." "There's no other choice this is a requirement"

Y'know, I hadn't seen the previous videos in this series and... This was such a cool atmospheric game to watch. Seriously, that part where she went around saying "Noah" as she knocked on all the doors and you had to keep silent? Chills. Well, until game mechanics happened, that is.

This kind of hits home. When I was in highschool, I met this girl for like a flash of a second when passing by my friends in the hallway. I was introduced to her and said hi but didn’t strike up anything after that. Like a week later I get bombarded with hate texts from her saying I’m a horrible person for not talking to her, almost exactly like those texts from Cara. I never gave her my phone number either, which made it even creepier. For the next 5 years or so, I’d get these texts and calls from her at random stints in my life, well after highschool. So much so, I told her I was going to contact the police if she continued. Luckily she stopped and it never gone any further than that, but this shit right here is scary and very real.

You kind of have to imagine what it must be like to be someone like that. This game did tension perfectly. You never knew where or what the threat was going to be. The only problem is when it made it blatantly obvious it was the ex the protag took too long to catch up. He should have been silent or they hire a writer. All the problems with this game came in the third act with mechanics but the tension and immersion was absolutely top notch.

I think the convenience store segment was brilliant. Having a brightly lit, well-populated place with pleasant ambient music in it, paired with a menial task, gets the player into such a relaxed state, and then the anxiety is re-heightened when the player leaves the store into a dark, quiet, empty street. I love horror games in which these little "breaks" are employed to keep the horror fresh and prevent the player from becoming immune. Absolutely brilliant psychology at play here.
@KNullHypothesis Жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely see how the devs dropped the ball on this one tbh. I can imagine it being frustrating that there aren't any checkpoints and that you have to guess what to do exactly. Plus, the whole story actually fell apart by the end and Cara was no longer scary because they didn't allow her to be. I agree 100% that the end line was also nonsensical "what freaked me out the most, is that my psychotic ex who broke into a house looking for me didn't actually steal anything, not the fact that she broke into the house looking for me in the first place"
@MadisonRamanamabangbang Жыл бұрын
I think that line was supposed to imply that since she didn't steal anything, that it wasn't some "trying to freak him out and getting something out of it", I think the point is that that meant she specifically was there to find and get to him directly

The problem with this is that the threat is just a single female. Okay she has a knife, but that alone is not enough to make her as intrinsically scary as the typical "monster" horror character. Any guy would probably be the one to threaten her and/or confront her (if feeling aggressive), or just stay in a room and call the police (if feeling logical), when he understood what was happening. The thing that makes her scary is the jumpscare; the noise when you are caught. Which isn't based in reality, why is there a freaky noise that comes from the supernatural realm when she catches you? It's like the game is trying to half portray her as a human and half portray her as demon, which no longer makes sense when we realise she is just a jilted girlfriend, even if pyschotic. As always the threat is in the unknown, the build to the conclusion holds the power, the what is it; it is more scary until that unknown is declared and you know it is a just an ex, a weaker female who you would actually have some chance of overpowering being male if a fight became the only option, and the logical thing to do is just stay in a room and use your phone to call the police. The game's answer is to still imbue her with some extra demonic quality to artificially continue the heightened scare, despite it not quite making sense any more. I still enjoyed watching however. :)
@LethalByChoice8 ай бұрын
I disagree because there's a reason why you can only die after she grabs a knife. Watch some videos on knife defense and you'd be surprised how hard it is to defend against a knife against someone trying to kill you let alone against a girl who's a drug addict, probably blasted on meth or cocaine and is stalking you outside your house and sending you crazy messages appearing nice and sweet one moment then a murderous psychopath the next. Gender really doesn't matter, its the fact that she's crazy, drugged, and has a knife. You'd be surprised how deadly women can be with a knife. Plus the guy could be skinny or not that physically or mentally strong so he would rather just run away, which most people would. I guarantee you most men will not try to fight back against someone with a knife. They might say they will, but that's bravado, the smart thing to do is to not risk getting sliced and diced and just run away. When you have no self defense skills in order to have a good chance at defeating your attacker. I'm just trying to explain how its very plausible that she would be dangerous with a knife, the fact that she's drugged out and crazy with a knife makes her very dangerous. Either way, trying to fight back against a woman who's drugged, crazy, and has a knife and wants to kill you, even if you could fight back, is not a smart risk to take my friend.

I also won’t spoil anything for you but just know 1: it’s a slow movie apparently, and 2: it’s gonna be about stuff you like. It came out today in theaters too so maybe you can catch it somewhere soon. I think its Shudder release is March, or so? It was gonna be October but it got pushed forward because someone leaked the movie last year >_> hence why people know so much about an unreleased film (outside of film festivals).
