As a 14 yr old I first saw James Brown live at the civic center in Tulsa, Ok. Concert was at 8 but I was there at 4:20. Saw 'em set up do sound checks n all. Didn't get to meet James but I shook Bobby Byrd's hand, Anne Norman had on a long black coat with a fur collar and was seeing how her platform would look to the audience. She said I was really dedicated to be there so early, and in almost a whisper she said "I really hope you enjoy the show" close enough I could smell the spearmint gum she chewed. She pinched my cheek and walked away. My mom had to make me wash my left cheek after a few weeks. Anyway the show was fantastic as was Anne and she was sweating just as much as James at the end. At 73 that memory is as clear as a bell

Very true, the was a true perfection. We musicians know what he means when he says back to the top and going right to the bridge. It’s on the one, the two drummers are playing different parts and it’s hard to put any timing to it but it sounds incredible.

I saw him in 1972, one year after this video was recorded, and I think the time frame (1970-1975) was probably the peak of his powers, he was, in a word, mesmerizing. I came out of that show with my thoughts about what was "great music" changed forever.
