Many people confuse Hairy Woodpeckers with Downy Woodpeckers! I have a difficult time telling them apart unless I see their bills closely. Hairy Woodpeckers have longer bills, and their bodies are larger than the Downy Woodpecker.
Woodpeckers are highly adaptable birds with diverse diets, which vary depending on species, season, and habitat. Here’s a breakdown of what woodpeckers typically eat:
1. Insects and Invertebrates
2. Tree Sap
3. Fruits and Berries
4. Nuts and Seeds
5. Suet and Human Offerings- Woodpeckers are frequent visitors to backyard feeders, particularly in winter when food is scarce. - They enjoy high-energy foods such as: Suet cakes, peanut butter, peanuts (shelled or unshelled), mealworms, cracked corn
6. Opportunistic Feeding- Woodpeckers may also eat eggs from other birds’ nests, small lizards, or even fish on rare occasions. - They are opportunistic feeders, adapting to the resources available in their environment.

I really have a hard time telling the hairy woodpeckers and the downy ones apart. I think if I saw both side by side, I could do it - but that never seems to happen.

I always try to look at the size of the bill since the Hairy Woodpecker's bill is about the size of its head! It would be great to see them next to each other to really see the difference.
