The digitalisation of cars is so idiotic. I don't want to fucking have to root/jailbreak my car. Further, sometimes "smart" features aren't particularly smart. It's pretty popular to have proximity detection on, that can detect whether or not you're about to crash into something and brake for you. I've seen it happen in the middle of a road with no abnormalities. No cars other than the car in question around. The car just slammed on the breaks. The driver looked horrified. It happened to my boss with her old car - every time she drove on a particularly narrow road, the car would slam the breaks because it thought she was crashing/driving off the road.

My very first programming job was while I was still in college. We had an IBM System 34 at work (the precursor to the iSeries) and it had a whopping 128K of RAM. At some point they decided to upgrade to 256K (it also could be upgraded to 512K). I was in the computer room working when the IBM rep came to do the upgrade, and I watched him. He opened a panel on the unit and changed 2 jumpers on a block of 3 jumpers and closed the panel up again, then left. The unit already had the extra memory in it! It just wasn't enabled. I tried to get my boss to let me fiddle with the jumpers to see if I could get us up to 512K , but he was afraid that I'd void the warranty. Turns out that our line printer worked the same way: 3 different models with 3 different printing speeds, each more expensive. Turns out it was the same model with a resister pack in it to slow it down.

@Waldel Martell I agree, but i'm affraid of times when we have no choice. There are less and less places where you can use old cars or get new parts for them. And we are going to a time when you can't buy it for less, and can't fix your stuff. I can hardly imagine any good reason to create 30 slightly different version of the same part for cars, sometimes just in size a few mm just to not fit in the same place or a few pins, same power output and data transfer, or simply just a firmware switch with the same components, just to avoid cross compatibility. And be able to sell the same thing same quality just with different letters for more. Not like the turned off cores in cheaper CPUs. Because than at least the housing would be the same, to be able to just put it in cheaper cars where the function is is not needed, but it is not compatible, and if it is once got put together can't change anything. And why hiding everything away even if it making the manufacturing process more complicated, just to not be able to change it your self. How is it going to be cheaper for anyone? If they would really wanted to make it cheaper they would make everything compatible and easy access and repair. Instead we throw away anythind slightly faulty. And do we need to create this many cars, when we don't know the demand, and if they can't sell just let it rotting away in huge yards before it get crushed. They yust figured out that people can't track their micro transactions ant they can benefit more even if they are selling everything with every car. When you pay for something because a road trip or weather condition, because it is "just" x much and jour trip takes longer or the weather stays bad and you have to pay "just" one more time. Compare it to when you buy the car with that function and you can use it any time (for example AC or heated window). Not mentioning the change of therms of conditions, system errors, prica changes. And if it brakes you have to go to the dealer and pay full price for service and replacement. If you try to repair it they shut down your car that you payed for because it is unsafe for you to plug in a one way connector. It is already happening, just look at Tesla (i also lowe the idea of it, but not the buisness policy, not like i ever going to have any problem with them, i never going to have enough money for anything they sell :-D but if others are following it...). And if you went to service, than now you can pay to use a part, that you already purchased twice, and who knows how many times during it's life span. Sorry unfortunetelly i can't see how it is going to be cheaper :-)

This goes way back. This was (is?) IBMs operating model for some enterprise systems. IBM used to have a "computing on demand" offering. IBM would lease a system to a company, and the company would receive a fully loaded version of that model. Only the resources agreed to in the in the lease were active. If the company needed additional CPU/Memory/Disk, temporarily or permanently, they called up IBM, paid the money, and IBM would remotely enable the entitled resources. Or the lease may include predetermined times of increased resources, such as in retail which requires increased transaction processing capability during the holidays. Eventually someone had the bright idea that those unused resources could be used by other customers. So now we have "the Cloud" which is the same leasing concept, but instead of sending the computer to physically reside in a single company's building sitting there with unused resources, IBM (or Microsoft or Amazon or whoever) keeps the computers in their own data center and leases that one computer to multiple clients keeping all the resources busy. There was also the Athlon/Duron pencil trick, but I do not remember if that was due to crippling of the CPU or if that was an intentional "feature" for over clockers. There were also stories of the 486SX vs. DX, but not going to repeat because I'm not sure if they were ever proven/verified.

One thing that is often not talked about is that while down-binning is a great way to get use out of otherwise damaged chips, manufacturing processes have matured to the point where these malfunctions are a lot less common than the rate of down-binning implies. Perfectly good chips are often down-binned to lower-spec models despite being perfectly capable of becoming a higher-spec model for the sole purpose of creating an "entry-level" and then selling the not down-binned chips at a premium upgrade. It always felt like a bit of a waste to me.

It's not a problem in the way that you think it is. Or the way that this video portrays it and correctly. Inkjet printers have print heads that wear out and need to be replaced. Rather than build a printer that's expensive and requires the user to service a part they build the print heads into the inkjet cartridges themselves which get replaced often. This way they can build cheaper print heads that don't last very long and need replacing as often as the cartridge would.

Time to invest in aftermarket ECU's. To be honest, you don't need to hack anything. You just need to rig a wire to a switch, add some voltage regulator, and turn it on and off whenever you feel like it. If there is an end circuit that checks whether or not you are paying for the seat heaters, you can just remove it.

A dirty little secret in the office laser printer market is that many of their machines (high and low spec) are the same physical hardware, it's just that when the printer is "pre-run" or configured prior to delivery to the customer, it's been permanently locked into being a particular print speed. E.g. a printer that can theoretically print 40ppm colour and 50ppm black and white (from the factory), is permanently "locked" to only print at a maximum of 30ppm colour and 40ppm black and white. Sadly, there is usually no way to undo this after it's been set.

Regarding the chip difference example i think "you missed a spot". As manufacturers have a high probability of success otherwise it would not really be feasible, some parts are intentionally shut down even if the chips are in perfectly working condition in order to artificially create different product tiers. Pretty much as how games are launched nowadays with the 60$ for the base game but can go over 100$ for the gold edition or whatever that has other content available to the player, but it's not something that it wasn't already build in.

The ink tank models of the printers have a software counter to limit on how much they can print before you have to "send them in for service" which is always "uneconomical" or sometimes the message simply tells you the printer or a component is "end of life". Look up "waste ink pad end of life". There's a KZbin video called: "Fix Epson ET-2720 Waste Ink Pad "End of Life" - Install External Waste Tank with EcoTank Supertank" - Watch that to see what kind of hoops you have to jump through just to try to work around these shenanigans. And every generation the printers get harder to defeat, until it's not possible or not worth the effort.

The first one actually makes a lot of sense. Reworking a defective items to work as a lower spec unit at a discounted price for the user is good for the company, good for the consumer, and good for the environment. Reminds me a bit of old cars with landau tops. Often times if a car's paint was damaged at the factory, it would be remedied by covering the top of the car with classy-looking fabric. I think that would cost the customer extra, though, so not as "noble" as the CPU/GPU rework thing since the landau top was only beneficial to the company. The ink and subscription car features are obviously both just anti-consumer nonsense that need to die immediately.

Except that it contains wrong information. Print heads are the most expensive part of printer except that they are not in the printer at all. Print heads wear out and need to be replaced often. Rather than build a printer that requires a user to service a part and be more expensive they put the print heads in the inkjet cartridge itself so that it gets replaced along with the ink and is a much easier process. The rest of the parts in a printer are inexpensive so if they break you can just get another printer and the manufacturer doesn't have to sell replacement parts. If you don't like this arrangement then you can always shell out the $$$ for a laser printer and experience what it's like the other way
Last month I bought a refillable printer (an epson ecotank) and so far I'm really happy about it, feels like freedom when you don't have to worry too much about the price of ink. I'm using the printer much more than I would before.
