All I see when I hear about USB standards are missed opportunities... it's an incredible feat of standardization wasted on bad nomenclature, lack of transparency towards costumers, and some baffling decisions I just cannot. Guess it's the problem with leaving too much into the implementers side of things, and how badly informed consumers are about it. We end up in a situation where a whole ton of tech gets limited by the lowest common denominator when it comes to adoption of parts of the specification. Then again, not specific to USB. Seems all standards in computers and electronics falls in some grey area like that.
@walkinmn2 жыл бұрын
Seriously, USB started as a revolutionary standard and I mean, it still is, but they did so many stupid things with the nomenclature and you know, standardization till we reached this point where you can get a cable with the famous USB-C connection and have no idea if it will work for what you need until you read the actual spec-sheet of the cable
@MartinFinnerup2 жыл бұрын
That is more of a property of backwards compatibility. Wanting to keep everything compatible, means you have to conform to the lowest common denominator, even if you can selectively use newer features as supported. Just look at Windows. Their doctrine of making everything compatible (up until Win11) means that there is a ton of bloat slowing everything down. This is however necessary, as you can't expect everything to always have the latest capabilities, especially when it comes to hardware.

Another consideration, please permit me to observe, is that wired USB frequently was also used to power whatever peripheral was attached, rather than requiring the peripheral to have batteries or be energized via its own wired power supply. To make the USB sans power vitiates many of the usual USB use cases. It might still be nice to have an explicitly donglefied way of doing it, where it is acceptable to have one dongle of a pair (or perhaps, peripheral dongles to a hub) to contain a power supply, and the dongles having a reasonably secure way of identifying one another, but I've never actually seen it. Wireless printers with WiFi or even Bluetooth can be a pain in themselves due to other built in identification protocol requirements, whereas a USB wireless dongle system might be able to made to work simply by setting up a security code with switches or a built in TV-remote-style keypad on each side.

There should be a very short range (i mean NFC like range) for very high speed wireless data transfer. The short range would mitigate most of the security risks associated with a wireless USB like protocol and the high speed would mean we could get rid of many usb ports making many appliances cheaper and more reliable.
@reappermen2 жыл бұрын
Except that a high-bandwith wireless circuit is inherently more complex (and thereby expensive) than a simple wired port. Though depending on how high bandwith you want it would end up very short ranged anyways, as you'd need higher frequencies which are also inherently shorter ranged beofre they get distored to much. Also roughly speaking wired transfer on any given technology standard has both cost and bandwith increase linearly by sticking more wires together, while wireless has more or less exponential cost increase with linear bandwith increase.

Many budget motherboards don't have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built-in. As others have pointed out, Bluetooth is not really ideal for peripherals that will most likely stay in one place and don't need to pair and unpair often, if at all, such as keyboards, mice, headsets, mics, etc. Speaking of pairing and unpairing, that still straight up doesn't work sometimes, and the pairing sequence is clunky for devices that don't have physical keyboards, such as car stereos. I've had Bluetooth devices from both cheap and premium brands that just crap out even at short distances, from budget keyboards to my Bose QC35 headphones. So there definitely is a use case for a wireless USB standard.

Wireless USB AKA BlueTooth. What would be nice would be a more available USB Wireless Extender, where you plug your USB device into a little box on one end and into the PC on the other end. I have seen a few devices, but nothing really standard or widely available

I was actually trying to make something like that. The idea was to have an "invisible" rf bridge. Basically, i would have transmitted anything that came from the Tx cable and on the Rx side i would have a Schmitt's trigger set high enough to trigger only with strong signals. This ignoring any rf law but whatever.

ah I was told that it was originally only intended for smaller devices to receive updates that didn't need a full Internet connection. however because the mass produced WiFi chips and antennas were becoming cheaper it just made sense to have said devices(door bells ,baby monitors to have a WiFi chip, also it could have been used for phones but then push updates became good.) if we had better wireless charging it would maybe have taken off but forcing a wire also ment that there was less risk that devices powered off during updates. and ofc back then during an update most devices were unusable. so it made sense to just force ppl to plus and wait. so potentially cause more issues that it solved.

currently Mad that a media agnostic usb standard exists, but no products for it. Gonna have to see if I can't make a microcontroller do that.

because pushing power through the air is hard. For peripherals that mostly stay in place, like speakers, keyboards, even mice, not having to power them with batteries is nice.

I would love some sort of wireless USB dongle for something like my MIDI gear which is normally wired but which I'd be happy to run off wireless

Unfortunately lots of peripheral USB devices with cord are still messy in most of the people's desktop. The Wireless scenarios from bigger manufacturer seems limited only for mouse or keyboard. If Wireless USB can continuously developed, lots small venders maybe capable to provide tremendous gadgets never seen.

My idea of this was different, the flash drive mags to the chassis of the computer and data transfers through NFC, that means the flash drive yanks off easily and in and direction.

i am more curious why there is no USB via internet or internal network. For example if i have a bluetooth dongle, i want to just plug it into a thin client in room A, and in room B computer can just use the bluetooth dongle like i directly plug it in into the computer USB port.

I wonder why there is no USB to wifi adapter device? I know there is special for printers, but I mean device to just repeat the signal while driver in pc taking care about recognizing and sending back whatever it should! Is it the buffer and timing problem?

Thats for sure we need wireless Usb. Actually i checked for that lots of times to buy one ower the years. And its good to see a detailed research for the case. The problem it seems money related wifi usb can be used for anything. While wifi usb can be used for any usb device which means manifacturers can sell you 1$usb to 100$+ bonus feature for a buggy wifi system stuck on printer that cannot be used for anything else

Honestly, I am currently using a wireless flash memory that I bought a couple of years ago. It solves many connectivity problems especially when you have to share data with many types of devices in different locations without having proper internet connection. However, you need to have a portable anti virus software installed on it just in case.

Does anyone remember that the Essential Phone had wireless USB as a feature use for their 360 camera? The pins just provided power, wireless USB handled the data.

There are actual firmware based data exfiltration attacks that use the USB bus as a radio transmitter. Secret squirrel stuff on par with remotely reading your keystrokes even on a wired keyboard.

I think it was ahead of its time because, back then, technologies like wireless mice were still pretty expensive compared to today. We use Bluetooth as an alternative, but it’s actually one of the worst options we could have gotten. I’m not sure exactly how it worked, but if Wireless USB had been a true USB replacement, it would have had a lot of potential. Even now, we don’t have a good wireless option for a network of devices that can directly connect with each other. If Wireless USB had been recognized as a standard USB connection, it could have allowed devices to connect indefinitely, with just two antennas and minimal effort. Sure, speed might have been an issue initially, but that’s something that could have been improved over time. Bluetooth can technically do this too, but it’s incredibly inconvenient, much slower than 400 Mbit/s, largely unsupported, and before BT 4.0/5.0, most of its useful features were missing. While we have Wi-Fi, it requires a hub to connect all devices, which is fine for speed but bad for direct or secure connections because it always has to go through at least one other device, which can be the weakest link in the network. With the rise of AR, I think we need a technology like multi-point Wireless USB, where devices can connect directly to each other without relying on a hub. Sure, there would be limitations, but we’re not even trying to explore this, even though it seems like a better option than relying entirely on Wi-Fi. Imagine how seamless it would be if devices could directly connect to each other, even when you’re outside your home, without needing constant internet access. We wouldn't have to deal with the annoying “please connect to the internet” PopUp every time a device loses its connection.

Could they increase bandwidth by including wireless channels alongside the wired ones? Like, if I had a flash drive that transmitted data both over the physical connection and over a wireless connection at the same time.

Wireless USB C might not use Wi-Fi because it is too slow for sending graphics data to the latest VR devices which also needs to be able to receive the higher bandwith signals in whatever format it is.

Point of order, both my wireless laptop, and my wired PC, are using ethernet. Ethernet is a signalling protocol, not a medium. My laptop uses Wi-Fi, my wired computer uses twisted pair. Specifically cat6a UTP. Do you can absolutely do ethernet protocol signalling over non copper non twisted pair.

Wireless USB dongles exist as raspberry pi devices. Set a 5-10TB file formatted at exFat on a server and have the raspberry pi zero w mount that file when it boots up. You essentially get a huge storage wireless USB stick. Perfect for retro gaming using devices that can use USB.
