It was kindly pointed out to me that I had The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeki Emezi on the slides and that they are non binary! I’m so sorry about that. The book was on my list for February and I left it on the March slides by mistake ❤️

I also read The House in the Cerulean Sea and adored it! I think it was so great to see two characters fall in love who are not the typical young handsome ambitious hero-types. One of the best books I've read so far this year was Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami because it raised so many issues and topics I've never really thought about before.

The House in the Cerulean Sea was my favorite read of 2020, so glad you loved it too! It’s like a hug to the heart and exactly what I needed in 2020/2021.This book for sure has a middle-grade/YA feel, but it’s actually labeled and marketed as an adult book. I took it as it’s supposed to give adults that child like feeling they got reading fantastical books when they were younger and it also lends itself to a story a family could read and discuss together. You mentioned how some people didn’t like how the messaging was straight forward, but that didn’t bother me either - I felt like Klune wanted it to be straight forward to the audience that people should be more compassionate, but that’s just my take 😊 UHG it’s seriously just the sweetest and can’t wait to reread it!! ❤️❤️

I appreciate your thoughts on Year of the Witching. I do want to reread it, and I think it would be helpful for me to note explicitly that books dealing with religious abuse really tend to strike a chord with me. I didn’t read the ending the same way, but I can see where you’re coming from. And so pleased you’re enjoying Talia Hibbert and Alyssa Cole! They are two of my favorite romance authors.

I am just getting back into reading. I have a goal of reading 30 books this year (Not much but more than the 3 I read in 2020.) So far I am at 11 and my favorite so far was Cilka’s Journey. I highly recommend it for March. The main character, Cilka, was an amazingly strong woman. I would recommend reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz first though, also an amazing book.

💜 My favourite book so far this year has been The Map of Salt and Stars by Zeyn Joukhadar. It was beautiful, and heartbreaking, and just amazing. My march reading is all based around Women's History Month, and is mostly non-fiction or fiction based on real life, it is also heavy on authors of colour. ☺️ Trying to push my boundaries and read books that will develop my understanding of the world I live in. 💜

I have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, which causes a lot of body pain, I totally related to Chloe’s illness. I really loved the book, I can’t wait to read the next two. I agree that their miscommunication was dragged on but I am glad it happened- it made it more realistic. I like how they were able to acknowledge how they could let their past “baggage” hinder their blooming relationship if they didn’t allow themselves to be vulnerable and give each other another chance.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is such a warm and cozy book. Gotta say on the age gap thing, there are 25 years between my parents and my mother was so incredibly in love with my dad, even though he was 50 and she was mid 20s. She was the one to seek him out and he fell in love with her as well. So, good relationships can happen and it doesn't need to be a red flag. That said I had a truly traumatizing (I have PTSD from it) relationship with a guy who was only 10 years older than I was at the time. I was 16 and he was 26. He was truly evil and I don't say that lightly, so I know how bad it can be.

💜 of course I made it to the end, I love your book talks, these videos only make my tbr list grow in size... the book I've enjoyed most this year was the invisible life of addie larue and I actually was encouraged to pick it because of one of your past videos; best decision ever, I've loved it so much.

@@PlantBasedBride SPOILERS . . I understand your critiques. I did not see the witches as villains originally, but I do think it they were commentary on reverse sexism and how we can become what we are fighting. And eye for an eye makes the world blind and all. I think the main character would have done what it takes either way, but I think Ezra was there to show what a male feminist ally should look like. I do agree maybe she is reliant on him a bit too much for the plot, maybe to speed up the book, but that actually struck me as realitistic. POC and women only got the vote because the help of white men in the West voted to let them. Disgusting yes, but also reality. It is like saying Katniss relied too heavily on Peta or Haymitch in the Hunger Games. Their strength as male allies does not take away from Katniss's own role as a strong woman in my opinion. You need allies in the oppressor's group, but that doesn't make the oppressed group any less strong. That said, I did feel Immanuel was quite bland and kind of an anti-hero. She only did things because she was forced into the situation. My only problem with the book, really.

@@PlantBasedBride It is hard to reed. Especially the first chapters are just deep lore, but if you make it through the first 100 pages you should be able to finish it. Yeah, I have struggled with that in the past. I also really dislike reading about toxic relationships or immature behaviour when it isn't framed as an undesirable/problematc thing. I don't find it romantic when someone is extremely jealous but that's a common aspect of many romance novels, as just one example.

@@PlantBasedBride I totally agree. There are so many stories with toxic relationships (e.g. Twilight), it drives me crazy. I think it's dangerous to show young readers those relationships, because often they take it as role model
