Tchaikovsky's one of my new favourite authors from last year. I'm currently reading: *Fantasy* Dragonbone Chair / Tad Williams - I'm really enjoying it so far, it is a slowburn but this time I'm in the mood for it. *Historical-Fantasy* Under Heaven / Guy Gavriel Kay *Historical-Fiction* Last Kingdom 4: Sword Song *Thriller* Bullet Train / Kotaro Isaka

Nice!! How’s Under Heaven? I have to get to more GGK this year.

Stoner is one of the most remarkable books that shouldn't be remarkable. It's fantastic! Good luck with Infinite Jest - that's one of those books I'm too afraid to pick up!

Happy to hear that the smaller TBRs seem to be working out well for you so far!! YAY for A Natural History of Dragons, I have no doubts that you will have a blast with that story. And I have been meaning to read The Doors of Eden for a while, so you can be my guinnea pig and let me know if I should prioritise it, hahah. Happy reading Sarah!! 🥰🥰

Tchaikovsky seems like an SFF chameleon. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Stoner, Sarah! I think you’ll immediately see what I mean about Williams’s range in a literary fiction way, and I’m excited to buddy read Butcher’s Crossing with you and Allen this year! That will be so fun! 😁

Hi Sarah! I also have This Tender Land reaching out from my TBR - this is a new author to me but I was also impressed by the strong reviews on GR. I may tag along with your Buddy Read if your group is open to that (I haven’t done many of that sort of thing so forgive me for not knowing much about how those work). As far as a romance rec. goes, here’s one from an off-beat sector: I am about 100 pages from finishing Lost Stars (my first foray into the Star Wars EU), and OMG, what a great story! It is largely a Romeo & Juliet-esque tale of forbidden love cast against the backdrop of the original Star Wars trilogy. Claudia Gray masterfully weaves the main story involving new characters (separate from the movies) with old familiar ones and key moments from the movies. The quality of the writing is outstanding; this longish book reads very quickly, like a YA but with a mature feel. Instead of inexplicable insta-love, we experience relationships, including the main romance, develop naturally and believably. And then Gray doesn’t tug or tear at the reader’s heartstrings, she shreds them. I’m not a particularly mushy type, but, not gonna lie, this one’s giving me chills. 💞 Thanks for the video!
@TheBookCure Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the rec! I think Andrew has that Star Wars book, so perhaps I’ll give it a shot. I’m discussing This Tender Land with my friend Baron on the Grimoire discord and I’m sure you’re welcome to join in! I’m also happy to chat on my discord if you’re there and want someone to discuss it with ☺️

TBRs are tough. Everytime I make one I really try to read all of them and then eventually I end up picking up other random books. I like to look at TBR as a pile of possibilities now
@TheBookCure Жыл бұрын
That’s such a good way to look at it. I like the short TBR so far. It’s appealing to my love of organization and allowing for my natural tendency toward impulsivity 😅

I'm hoping to get to Lady Trent too, soon! If you like it, you need to read Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faerie - same sort of vibe, told in journal entries about her chronicling her study of faerie life. Its wonderful.

I love Infinite Jest. Make sure to use two bookmarks (second one for the Endnotes, which would be a shame to skip over). I probably wouldn’t have put anything else on a TBR for the month. I don’t remember how long it took me to read, but certainly over a month, though I read several books concurrently. Quite briefly, it’s about addiction and the ability to feel anything at all. Age of Madness is brilliant. The second book is better than the first, and the third is even better. I just finished it last week and I will be quite happy if I start a better series this year. Oh, and of course, it has Shivers being Shivers.

I am awaiting to get my hands on the final "Dandelion Dynasty" Novel, "Speaking Bones" by Ken Liu and since I am about to start reading the "Warlord Chronicles" Trilogy by Bernard Cornwell with "The Winter King", Liam from "Liam's Lyceum" has also got me to buy "Gurzil", another interesting take on Arthurian Legend that I hope to weave in-between my reading of "WCT"! If time, I’ll start on either my designated annual Guy Gavriel Kay books (“Under Heaven” & “River of Star”), or continue on with Elric of Melnibone ("The Sailor on the Seas of Fate") by Michael Moorcock and the "Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser" stories by Fritz Leiber. And I can hardly wait for "The Edan Trilogy" by Professor Philip Chase, starting this March!

I just got copies of Stoner and Augustus and hope to start one or the other soon. We’ll see how that turns out since I’m pretty much exclusively a mood reader. At the moment I‘m reading Ed Yong‘s An Immense World (very ejoyable non fiction) and hoping to pick up book 3 of The singing hills cycle by Nghi Vo. Since they are loosely connected stand alone novellas (asian inspired fantasy) they are perfect for „in between“.

I loved Lady Trent. I think you have to be willing to be in for slow reads, though. They are light and funny and She is sassy! Tchaikovsky has never wowed me. I have liked everything to a degree, I’ve never loved anything. I’ll be waiting to hear your thoughts on Eden. (I’m similar in what I’ve read of his - Guns, Children, Elder, & Redemption’s Blade) I’d like to read his new one (city of last chances) and maybe a novella called “made things” . In February I'm going to be reading: - Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo - Fool's Fate by Robin Hobb - Dreaming the Bull by Manda Scott - Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson If i have time maybe Dreaming the Hound by Manda Scott or mood read something from Kindle Unlimited which i just had success with on The Iron Crown by LL MacCrae. I was thinking about reading Wolf Hall sometime in March if you were till interested in maybe checking that one out!

Wait, Infinite Jest needs to be read in the giant floppy edition, whoever bought you the hardback made a catastrophic mistake. And Natural History might make one of your favorite series of all time based on your past non-fiction naturalist biology books you like, but now your expectations are sky high so my apologies haha I didn't do the audiobook though, her sketches are in the book so you are missing out on how she sketches the dragons...which I think is an important part of reading the series 🤷♂️
@TheBookCure Жыл бұрын
I realized once I started the audio that there were sketches. 😭 If I enjoy Book 1 I’ll grab the physical copies so that I can look at the sketches. Still may listen to the audio, but look at the sketches as well. And giant floppy copies are always the best copies!
