Jane, there is a lot of snobbery with Blackpool. A lot of people I know call the old place dirty, tacky, etc. every town centre I know is dirty but Blackpool from 8am on is spotless. The street cleaners do the best job I've seen and it's the visitors that make the mess then go home and call the old place but keep returning. I do not go back to anywhere I don't like. Also a lot of people never venture further than between south and north pier. They don't even know that bispham, cleveleys, st Anne's, Lytham, Stanley park, etc exist. I always defend the old place and love it. Hoping to move there soon. Brilliant video Jane. Ta

Most of the people who say negative things about Blackpool haven't even bloody been. We have said that even if we went elsewhere on holiday, we would still come to Blackpool. Even if the sun doesn't shine when we come down, there is always something to do. We will always be on Team Blackpool 🙌. Xxx

100% with you on this. There's a vlogger who goes around different towns and cities throughout the UK looking at the more run down areas. He did Blackpool recently and filmed around the back streets, and fair enough, there were some boarded up shops and grot spots, and he also pointed out all the shops with their shutters down. This was filmed in February! Well out of season. What the hell did he expect? I love coming over to see my pals in Blackpool, and love the town. It's a brilliant place and, like you, I'd love to know where there is another large town or city that doesn't have any grot spots. Keep going with the good, positive vlogs that you do. I love 'em.

Very pragmatic and philosophical Jane , with a hint of disdain. Perfect. As someone who loves Blackpool, I hate seeing the negative nonsense. £14 b&b? Let's get the UV out. Why? I've stayed in some awful places, but there's no need to over analyse. When I first lived in Blackpool in 2000, I fell in love with it. It still has a long way to go, but as you say, everywhere has the same problems. When my good lady retires, we're moving down. Probably to Bispham as I'm not allowed to drive. Trams and buses will do me. Cheers Jane. Great rant!

Well said Jane, I live in Norfolk and as much as some areas are lovely we have rough areas too, including Great Yarmouth a seaside town very similar to Blackpool. Will often hear the locals say “oh there’s nothing “Great” about Great Yarmouth. But it just has the same problems as most seaside towns. Even our main city centre Norwich has rough areas. I’ve been really lucky the last 2 years when I’ve been to Blackpool it’s been hot and sunny. Last year I was there the first week of September in that heat wave. I love having trips on the trams have to say Cleverleys is my favourite place. But i always do the whole route up and down at least once. I love reading the comedy carpet, I don’t know anywhere else that has one of those, all that history just reading that. Norwich have only just recently got electric buses, where as Blackpool have had electric trams for years. Will be back in Blackpool later in the year. Talking of negativity I noticed on the Care For Cleverleys facebook page the other day people complaining about the direction of the benches, no gratefulness that volunteers have been working hard to make the place even better. Just moans, such a shame that rather than moan people don’t actually offer to help to make a difference.
@visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
All seaside towns have trouble with rough areas because of what they are. They're seasonal for the most part which creates unemployment in winter and the tourism jobs are mostly low-wage which creates all kinds of social problems. Then there's the added issue of local authorities shipping their problem people out to the coast and I know that happens all round the UK. Well I think the coastal towns have had enough - I know I have! And as for Care for Cleveleys - one of the main agitators regarding the bus station was one of the regular volunteers! Give me strength!

Hi Jane what a good conversation starter. Yes, I agree with what you said about how there are so many negative news stories etc however, as you say negativity draws attention and attention is a money-maker in media! I have been lucky enough to travel far and wide and have seen good and bad in all areas around the world but that's what makes a place. In some of the poorest places, you can find such strength in communities and some of the best in humanity. I visit Blackpool every year and love the place. I enjoy the sea air in all weathers and enjoy what Blackpool has to offer. When I say to people I'm off to Blackpool again some have said "Oh Blackpool what a dump" and I just reply by saying well we like it and point out some of the great things we've done and what the town has to offer. It takes all kinds to make a world and we all like different things and places. @visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
I see your point, but the weather is so brutal that greenery really struggles to grow on the seaward side where it's so exposed. Places like Jubilee Gardens thrive at Gynn Square, but only because they're sunken and therefore slightly sheltered. Being sunken/sheltered then creates its own problems with ASB...

Well done Jane! Correct in your observations. We are all guilty of bias (particularly unconscious bias), because of the way we have developed since childhood. It is everywhere. We constantly make judgements based on pre-conceived ideas. If someone pre-conceives Blackpool is going to be bad it will always be bad no matter what Blackpool Council does, or you yourself does in promoting the Fylde Coast in your excellent little vlogs. If something nasty happened thousands would turn up as voyeurs but anything pleasant would struggle to make the news. Just spent a lovely week in The Imperial Hotel. Very interesting video and I agree with your philosophy but can also relate to the tenets of it too. I have pretty much grown up in the 'posh' parts of Cheshire and now even though I am in my very early 60s I have never been to Blackpool! At one time there was a horrible class based snobbery about BP which I think is totally unfounded. Recently, I started to feel a photographers curiosity about the location, I used to be a nightclub photographer and the manager of one of my clubs is now managing Trilogy and this drove me to want to explore BP - that incidentally was how I managed to come across your channel. The problem with a lot of people is a lack of cultural nuance and an inability to understand things in a proper context. The context for Blackpool is its status as one of the oldest purpose-made seaside resorts in the UK, it's Victorian heritage, the dramatic sense of defiance in the face of northern gloom or the cold indifference of the Irish sea - manifest in the lights and the colorfulness of the town and many other things. That coastline is very photogenic and I have visited other parts of the western coast, places like Formby and North Wales --- all very beautiful. People also forget that some of the most affluent coastal locations in the north are within the Fylde or Wirral catchment areas too. I liked one of your previous videos (with the mirror ball) that showed a very clean, linear coastline with quite a lot of smart contemporary architecture and attractive older buildings and I didn't expect BP to look like that. Never forget that even Venice Beach (in parts) is basically just Brighton with palm trees and a worse drug crime problem.

Very eloquently put. I hope you visit - there's some striking street photography to be had - and not many yards away beautiful, dramatic views and historic architecture. Certainly a town of contrasts

Its like everywhere, good and bad aspects, what gives it a bad name are the hen parties/stag parties young farmers drunk, day and night, causing problems for police and drugs as alot of other towns get, ambulance, maybe a charge for these services, as a deterrant, something to make these people think twice, they take the services for granted, and make delays happen for other people needing an ambulance, and the strain on police services, my council tax has shot up, and the resources are basically going to dealing with this. There needs to be a solution, or at least try and find one to change the negative and bad in all towns and city's, if only ! The council workers, do work hard keeping blackpool prom clean, and there is alot to offer people coming on holiday 😊

We indeed gravitate toward the negative; look at what entertains us ... most fiction is based on the premise of the positive striving against the negative, most news stories are rooted in sensationalising the negative. I saw a trailer - a trailer for a christmas episode of East Enders which had a thug pinning someone up against the wall [and I am told this is about the level of the soap opera [I would rather chew my hand off than watch soap operas!] Most game station activity seems to be shooting at something or blowing something up. I consider that the reason for this resides in our emergance from being base primates to being Homo Sapien Sapien. We were self aware in the plural as in a cooperative tribe [with a view to the future] as well as being self aware [with a view to the future] as individuals,. As hunter gatherers we were intensely vulnerable to predation and losing proximity to food and water as a result of the fear of predation. That fear has followed us and even in this year of 2024 we fear predation at the hands of extremists, muggers and also the loss of income and food etcetera. Fear, like the onset of pain is protection as we have the concept of anticipation as Homo Sapien. The social media keyboard warriors prey on this fear and get more notoriety [and subscribers] for offering negativity, politicians prey on our vulnerability. We have awareness in our most basic level of understandings that we live in a fragile bubble. We watch on tv decades of people starving in countries like those in Ethiopian famines and other people oppressed - professing sadness but when they seek asylum or sanctuary here we react negatively when we know that if we were threatened with the same we would emigrate [and many have] The BBC reported the opening of Showtown, mentioning the problems but ignoring the huge investments aimed at improvements in the resort. [Perhaps Showtown being situated in what looks like a black, cuboid gassometer did not holp!] I personally have talked to agencies who admit sending vilnerable people to Blackpool because of the low rents, they have no response to the negativity they are causing. What follows is that certain vloggers make a point of walking up and down boarded streets filming but do not research the root cause and try to make change - and positive change only happens by evolution, not by revolution as some armchair economists / sociologist consider the solution to be. Negative bias .... about three years ago I was asked to find a beautiful, hopeful, positive poem to be read at a wedding .. I went right through a bookshelf of poems and amongst them all I found three poems that were not trite or based on over-sentimentality .... it is so easy to write of melancholy and despair rather than hopefully and positively. Negative bias has been with us all along. That is my two-pennorth! :-)
@calderdale67957 ай бұрын
Very well explained. I suspect you are familiar with the work of Carl Gustave Yung , who explains (among other things) the concept of the Collective Unconcious . For reasons you explain the suggestion is that shared negativity keeps you safe and that primordial memory is hard wired into our brain. It could also be argued that shared negativity is a fashionable trait and hence imbues an element of status .Hence the notion that Blackpool is necessarily downmarket for “those in the know” : even without objective knowledge. Thus the Blackpool vloggers who thrive on the negativity gain viewership , perceived confirmation and apparent status : and we all know who they are. Interestingly the female vloggers are invariably positive in their outlook.
@erykfreethinker71477 ай бұрын
@@calderdale6795 Thank you for your comment Calderdale. I had not considered a gender split but you offer a valid point of view. The temptation of course is to fall into the 'nurturing' stereotype but perhaps the positivity of female bloggers is a contrarian impulse - reaction to the egoistic subtext which I have detected in the male detractors. The wish for notoriety in showing the deepest faults may lead to a compensatory attitude where female vloggers may well allude to what is problematic whilst seeking for hope. I see a lack in male vloggers *with one or two notable exceptions*, [one of which I subscribe to] to describe what they film in detail for the lowest common denominator but do not discuss the problems behind the negativity before them. For me, Calderdale, a vlog on youtube is a symbiotic connection between viewer and uploader. If I use my time in watching and subscribing and commenting it is an appreciation of the work that has been done to offer me benefit for the use of my time. I get that in this channel and I respond to it. Where I have seen negative attitudes in this life I have [in fitter, younger years], protested on marches, worked on committees and organisations to oppose these attitudes, whether it be race or disability hate, anti-social behaviour or whatever. I wish I could know, Calderdale, how many detractors of Blackpool or any town or city have risen up and done anything of practical use as well as upload for ancreasing viewership. As a matter of interest I have found that when people are asked if they want the opportunity to stand up to the plate and make a difference there are more females than men responding but that is just subjective experience. As a tangent to what we have said it is interesting that we do not see many vloggers with negative attitudes filming the people cleaning the beaches, planting flowers and so many other things - resorts like Southport and Cleveleys as well as Blackpool and Fleetwood have caring citizens but this channel does appreciate their work and altruism and long may it continue. In sum I like the words of Jung as follows, if I remember correctly; "Knowing your own darkness may well be the best way forward in dealing with the darkness of other people" Not totally apposite in the context of our comments but I think it has much to commend it.
@calderdale67957 ай бұрын
@@erykfreethinker7147 Yes , the egoism you mention may well be the forerunner to the requirement for status that , in my experience tends to be typically male. The Jungian quote you recalled is on a fridge magnet here , next to one that says , “I’m on a gin and tonic diet , so far I’ve lost two days”. I hope Carl would approve ? A quote favoured by my late wife , who introduced me to Jung ,(and trawled from her note book ) , has some relevance to this channel , and I offer it to the good lady. “The sea is like music , it has all the dreams of the soul within itself and sounds them over “.

@@calderdale6795 Thank you for the quotes Calderdale. Jane would certainly like that depiction of the nature of the sea. It could end up as a quote on my refrigerator.

@erykfreethinker7147 and @calderdale6795 - some very interesting points you've both made there. From being a shy little quiet thing (believe it or not!) the years have made me realise that I have to stand up and be counted for what I believe in. If that goes against the algorithm then so be it. At least I know that I tried!

Hi Jane. You set the record straight. Too much negativity in the news. I live in Perth, Australia , and been to Blackpool twice on my trips to the UK. My hubby is from Southport UK & we always look forward to coming to Blackpool. So much to do & see always. Some people forget their are dirty places in other cities or sea side towns or countries. But, I say who cares, the nitty gritty part of the place makes it unique & interesting.
@visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
Thank you. Likewise I know that Southport has its problems, but we really enjoyed our day there last year and will be going again this summer.

I’m so glad you did this vlog Jane, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say, people are all too quick to bring Blackpool down. I have had many wonderful holidays there for almost 50 years, our children and now our grandchildren have the same love for it too. I have been to other places in the UK and yes they are very nice (and yes they do have run down areas too) but don’t offer the entertainment and wonderful seafront that Blackpool has, also there is nothing better than a good stormy day ! I would dearly love to live there but in the meantime will continue to come and have many more happy times in my favourite place .

LADY JANE, people in the future will not be kind to each other, only a few, sad to this that will happen, I never wrote you any negative things, but I did noticed that tv news from England do give blackpool a very bad negative reviews,....why, this town used to look so grand and beautiful, I think some council judges that grew up there grew up really on the harsh side of life and now they want to bring their hurt toward blackpool town, the nice architecture buildings and kind folks there, somebody's hurting bad in the city council, and I sure don't know who, if they will change, the city town of sea side will change for the good, love ya, (A SMILE MAY NOT ONLY CHEER A FROWNED FACE, BUT ALSO AN HAPPY SOUL AND A HURTED FEELING, AND WILL BRING HOPE BACK TO YOU),.......MARIUS(PUNK RULES),......STAY STRONG LOVE, DON'T GIVE UP THERE

Hello Jane. I totally agree with you. I've said for a long time that the Southern based media is biased against Blackpool. I live in North Wales & it's completely different here - as they will never say anything negative about Wales & will get upset & angry at anyone who does say anything remotely negative, so it's the reverse problem. Neither viewpoint is accurate or helpful. I'm hoping to move to Thornton, Cleveleys or Fleetwood within the next couple of years so I follow your channel closely. Best Wishes, Maxine

Strange isn't it how for example the Welsh will be 'patriotic' and defend their place passionately, while other people are the exact opposite and haven't got a good word to say about where they come from.

I no longer read a paper or watch the news as it makes me angry or depressed and I can't be doing with it. All towns have problems like you said, I live in a rural area and I'm well aware there are drugs etc but it is still a beautiful place. It looks like lots is being done to improve Blackpool and I'm sure we will be back again in the future.

I think the world has gone skewiff. We've all got used to being materialistic and having everything we want. Life doesn't work like that and people have forgotten how to be happy with small things. Enjoying family, friends, the sunshine and sea views is every bit as enjoyable as spending hundreds of pounds on expensive days out.

The sea front of Blackpool is fun yes but step behind it and most of the town is a slum full off doss houses and imported crack heads .. go a few miles either way into Fleetwood or Lytham, St Annes and it’s a totally different world … FYI I live opposite Stanley park thank goodness, it’s remain nice here and on the whole it’s a love or hate relationship with the town … but being in denial about the real situation of the place is false it’s a false ideologie.. But no matter what it’s still a great town with flavour and the spice of live running through it
@visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
It's not fair to say 'most of the town' - although there are too many doss houses and imported crack heads but that's the fault of landlords who want cheap property and maximum income - landlords who rarely live in or come from the town and don't give a toss about whether it sinks or swims as long as they get their buck. It's the same in inner city areas everywhere - unfortunately inner city Blackpool is close to glitzy, holiday Blackpool so people see it more easily. I'm certainly not in denial - but I do know that a lot of time, effort and money is spent on trying to sort this kind of problem out.

Blackpool is very much a second home for me (first one being Manchester). Although there are positive things about where I live, I've seen Blackpool improve in those particular areas where it may have been lacking. One thing I can't defend though are the buses and how the services have been cut back...again! I'd say that's fairly neutral overall? ;)
@visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
I can't comment on buses as I don't use them. I have terrible travel sickness so it's walking, driving or trams for me!

All towns have the same kind of nightlife, from Cornwall to the tip of Scotland. People getting too drunk on cheap booze and drugs, fighting and throwing up. If that's what you like then fine but if you don't, then don't join in. Over the years the pubs and clubs in Blackpool have become concentrated around particular areas like Queen Street which does help to zone it.

I have to disagree I moved from London the best place in england to Thornton-clevelys 3 years ago forced to by parents, and Blackpoo my nearist town is a complete dump it was depressing as hell,I've now moved to Lancaster 4 months ago it's way better than Blackpool in every way,but I dont like it up north so I'll be going back to london where the people are acually nice and friendly
@visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
Strange. Everyone I've ever spoken to who comes to Blackpool/the north from London says it's the other way round - people are friendlier here.

@@visitfyldecoast This could be a generational thing? I remember being forcibly removed from Yorkshire as a child and not being too happy about it. The draw of London is quite strong in the young , as it was with me when I lived in SW1 for a while. Age changes perception.

Basically standards of people have deteriorated and many factors are to blame political media and aggression and ambulances in your videos I love your trying to be positive but on the whole it's badly deteriorated but I have a fondness connected to my past but sorry it's a terrible run down mess fact 😤😤
@visitfyldecoast7 ай бұрын
I can't disagree - there are a lot of terribly run down properties which is the fault of landlords - many of which live who knows where and buy property here because it's cheap. They aren't invested in the town and what it's like, they just invest their money where they think they will get most return. That's a lot of the problem all over the country - localism has all but disappeared and how are you ever going to care what your property looks like if it's in a place where you've never been, let alone feel passionate about?
