The 4876 was among one of the last GG1 locomotives in service. After it was repaired it served for another 30 years until finally being retired in 1983. It is in the collection of the B&O Museum in Baltimore today although in poor condition.

@bluerazor7049 5 ай бұрын
It's been 41 years since it last ran and it needs attention, even a cosmetic restoration would do it justice. It's a shame that a few of the GG1's are neglected and rotting.

@user-wi6sh6vh8u 5 ай бұрын
4876 may be in the B&O museum, and a number of others are as well, but any other GG1s in need of restoration will have to be limited to coal transport from Kentucky to Ohio by hauling bituminous from Pikeville to places like Toledo, Youngstown, and Cleveland, for fueling the steel mills.

That movie was based on the CSX 8888 "Crazy Eights" incident, in which a freight train was accidentally started up with no one in the cab, and so it ran unmanned for about 70 miles. Again, no one was killed or even injured, and in this case the train didn't even crash (though it was hauling hazardous chemicals). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSX_8888_incident

I didn’t realize this was one of the first broadcast news events. I was also an electric train enthusiast and fell in love with the Art Deco GG1. Eventually I bought a Lionel GG1 and it’s been one of my prize possessions and I proudly display it in my home. This story faded so fast It was frustrating to tell the story and realized nobody heard of it or remembered. It’s a joy to relive this story and yes even as a child I was surprised nobody was killed!

Nice video, thanks, but one detail is incorrect. The 4876 was not cut into 3 and rewelded. That's an urban legend. In fact the engine was totalled in the crash, its undercarriage ripped away. After Ike's inaugural it was scrapped, cut it into little pieces hauled away in gondola cars. Only some components were salvaged and reused at Altoona where they built a new GG1 with the same number. Insurer Lloyd's insisted on a rebuild, not scrapping, so although the new engine should have been numbered 4940, it kept 4876 to comply with the "rebuild" charade. Today's 4876 is not the same one that hit Union Station but is actually the youngest GG1 by a decade, though you'd never know it from its sadly deteriorated present state.

Thanks for the clarification. It is a good video. I grew up in the 1950s near North Philadelphia Station through which all of the great passenger trains of the, PRR,, Sou, ACL, Seaboard, C&O would stop, invariably powered, silently and majestically by a GG1. They invariably had a 'fireman', in those days, 'union rules'. Steam locomotives still serviced the 'Sea Breeze' to Atlantic City. GG1s were switched out for diesels on through trains in Harrisburg and Washington, D.C. The GG1s were extremely reliable and seemingly invincible.

Great work. A couple of comments (with so many reviews, I may be repeating someone else. I apologized if this is the case. 1) The issue with the 8600 coach was not a specific design flaw for that car, but the fact that the PRR car behind it had a lower buffer, which banged against the angle cock. It was common for NH and PRR to share equipment between Boston and DC. There was some sort of remediation done to the 8600's to prevent the problem from re-occurring. 2) The New Haven FL9, EP5, Hancock air whistles and the red/white/black paint scheme were not in existence in 1953. It was probably Alco PAs, EP4 and all would have been painted in the classic green and gold paint scheme. Good stuff none the less, and a great telling of the story

Today marks the 68th anniversary of this disaster and it's quite a shame it's often forgotten but at least the crash scene was inspired for the crash scene from the film "silver streak" which I have yet to see. It's also a surprise the anniversary of this disaster is a day after my birthday. But the 1 thing I'm hoping in the future is that 4876 the GG1 that fell into the basement of the station 68 years ago is to get some well deserved cosmetic work in the future since the engine deserves it

Been to the B&O museum in Baltimore many times, I highly recommend going. Also there's another B&O museum in Ellicott City, MD, it's very small compared to the one in Baltimore. However it still is worth checking out, it has the oldest surviving train station in the US, being that it was the first terminus for the B&O in 1831

This was truly one of the luckiest train wrecks in history. I really credit the durability of the GG1 and accompanying coaches for this one as had it occurred with todays trains, the whole thing would have been crushed and shards of thin steal would have killed and injured many.

The GG1 was VERY well received by crews. Not only were they solid builds, they were a jack of all trades. Fast intercity freight? no problem. Fast timed passenger trains? no problem. An old Amtrak guy told me the GG1s were the best locomotives they ever had due to their reliability. They even outlived their original replacements the GE E60s who couldn't hit 100mph without derailing. The thing that ended them was their frames started rotting due to age and the EMD AEM-7 which was just as good as the GG1 but could hit higher speeds was a worthy apprentice and the perfect engine the GG1 could pass the torch to.

There was one brief shot, filmed from a hi-rail truck, of the train entering the terminal, which was filmed at Northwestern Station, now called Ogilvie Transportation Center, which even showed the dwarf disc semaphores that were in use through 2005 at least. I tried to visit the B&O Museum last yr Before leaving the hotel, I checked the hrs. which they were open, I thought great, no problem. Upon arrival, I found the doors locked, but saw people inside. After knocking on the door, 2 people came and opened it to inform me that they are closed to prepare for the Santa train. After going ballistic, they tried to calm me down by offering a pass good for the rest of the year. Told them that I would not make the drive from Pittsburgh just to use it. This was the only reason that we stopped in Baltimore that year. They sure have Baltimore a black eye, I told them that the website should have said something about the closure.

Not to mention, when the ICC examined the train at the crash site, the brake shoes on the locomotive and the first 3 coaches were almost completely scorched and the locomotive's wheels had flat spots over 5 inches long! (Yikes!) However, the wheels and the brake shoes on the rest of the 13 coaches had little to no wear. Probably for at least a couple of hours or maybe a few hours after the initial crash, the wheels on the locomotive and the first 3 coaches were scorching hot. In fact, about an hour and a half after the initial crash, a railroad employee burned his hand when he touched one of the locomotive's wheels.

Such a sad ending picture of 4876 being eaten away by the elements. I guess since the GG1 holds a very special place in my heart and a position that have been cemented by playing Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe... Until you get to the late 80s and 90s, the only replacement for a GG1 is... Another GG1. No other locomotive could haul as much weight and at that speed as a GG1 could, if you wanted to do it with diesels you needed 4+ of them, and then they just wasn't as cost effective as the GG1.

This video makes me want to make one for the two Federal Express crashes that happened in my home-city of Bridgeport, CT (1911 and 1955). Interestingly, there was a crash in 2016 at almost the exact same spot as the 1911 wreck. There's also a crash that happened in nearby Trumbull that I think I've found the site of (now a dead-end street), plus there's infamous Great East Thompson Train Wreck of 1891. And I'm still looking into other wrecks that happened around here. When the taxes prevent you from leaving Connecticut, you gotta look inside for interesting things. Thankfully there's plenty here.
