Flight control is intended to be shot through an open bore which allows the "flight control wad" to hold the buckshot together longer in flight which yields the tighter patterns. When you use the FCW in a tighter bore it restricts/grips the wad and strips it away from the buckshot causing the buckshot to spread quicker which obviously defeats the purpose.

Half way through he mentions he is using full choke. I also have seen video confirming the plastic cup is supposed to hold the pellets together out to about ten yards, then it has fins that come out / shed the wad. I would love to see this re-done with a smooth bore / modified comparison.

I've had such good results with my rifled slug gun that even after they opened things to straight-wall rifle cartridges a few years back her in Ohio, I didn't switch because I had the process dialed in. I'm no Paul Harrell but with a Mossberg 500 with a 24-inch slug barrel and scope, I'm hitting them in the vitals out to 180 yards (generally 150-180 the last few years) using Hornady SST 12 gauge 2-3/4. They drop like a rock. One step at most. This year for the first time I had to do a coup de gras, but he was yelling in deer, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" Geezerhood is upon me now and I'd prefer less recoil but money is an issue too so I have so far procrastinated on a rifle.

Data shows the FCW groups open up as MV increases. This makes sense as aero drag rises quickly with increased MV, which pulls the wad off the shot column sooner. For example, see 3" FCW test results. These add 3 pellets and 100+ FPS, and the groups aren't as good. This is why we won't see magnum velocity FCW loads. (And for anyone who isn't aware, the FCW works best in cyl. and IC barrels- tighter chokes can strip the wad and yield poor results.) Also, data shows that ambient temperature affects the FCW enough to reduce effective range 5-10 yards on cold days. This makes sense, again, in terms of aero drag: cold air is more dense, and it seems to be enough to make a measurable difference on FCW groups, unlike traditional loads. Ultimately, the FCW is interesting and useful technology, but like most technology, it's got some "foibles." Great videos Paul! 😁

While I don't know that I would use this ammo for hunting dear at distance, this is a great personal defense round in the police and civilian world IMO. The agency I worked for switched to Federal Premium Buckshot Flight Control 9 pellet buckshot several years ago for a few reasons. The military grade 00-Buck hit hard but spread out quite a bit even at 15 yards. We trained patrol that the shotgun with buckshot was a 25 yard and closer tool. Other buckshot had a 16-20 inch spread at this distance which could mean pellets not hitting an intended target. The Federal load had a much tighter group (usually 10-14 inches at 25 yards) and even tighter at 15 yards (Hand size groups). This tighter group even helped with qualification scores and gave officers the confidence that they could strike their intended target and not have to worry about flyers. Great video.

Good Video!! Well, I am not a gun expert, I don't "hunt" either. But I live on what is left of our "family farm" and the Big City has sprawled out and just about RUINED everything. Since that happened it has turned in to a high crime area. I have been burglarized a number of times and my employee I used to have a family members have been the victims of violence. So, my guns are for "home defense" etc. I don't have the ability to do "scientice tests" but I do "practice" fairly often and do enjoy simple target shoting. I bought a Case of the Federal Law enforcement 12 gauge ammo with the Flite Control wadding because it was on sale from an on-line dealer and the price was good. I normally buy Remington or Winchester as a rule. With a Shotgun I rarely shoot over 65 FEET not Yards, but FEET, and with the "Flite Control" wadding I get a pattern with a diameter of about 2 inches and the wadding is often stuck in the HOLE the pellets make or the wadding is lying at the FEET of the target after hitting it and falling on the ground. But I repeat, this is at about 65, maybe 70 feet or LESS, not more. I LIKE Remington and Winchester Buckshot, from shooting targets, those two appear to really do the job at close combat distance 70 feet or less. I notice the "Brass" on Remington (it is attracted to a Magnet so it is ferrous metal and NOT brass, but the "cup" for the power is twice as tall at the Federal Cup. The Federal "brass cup" is NOT magnetic. That trivia seems to NOT MATTER at all. The Federal Law Enforcement, Flite control Wadding 12 gauge has plenty of GAS to cycle my Remington 1100 autoloader. But from a "feel" of shooting it it seems the Federal has slightly less "power" or "Pressure". But that is NOT scientific and I am not an expert. I have never fired the stuff at the distance you are shooting at. This is a very good and interesting video to me. Thanks, BB

You defeated the purpose, and design of this ammo, when you went to a full choke. It just stripped the wad off, when it squeezed thru the choke. I pattern A LOT of buckshot with 8 different size chokes, and I CANNOT beat the patterns of the Flight Control from a cylinder bore. This ammo isn't just "hype". But, you're right... Buckshot is just inconsistent in nature. Great video, as always, Paul.

Another great presentation. I've used the Federal 00-9 Buck "Tactical" Load with Flight Control Wad - this is a reduced velocity load (nominal 1145 fps). The patterns with that load are I think what made the reputation of the flight control wad. I've patterned that load in multiple shotguns, and in some the pattern was an incredible 2" out to 25 yards. The reduced velocity helps.

Very good, sir. I keep my shotgun loaded for home defense with Hornady Critical Defense 2 3/4" #00 buckshot with 8 pellets. I found a deal on 250 rounds of this stuff at about 6 bucks for a box of 10 rounds, and after looking at muzzle velocities of other shotgun ammo I decided to make the purchase. I'm pretty enthused by the ammo I bought although I haven't done any actual research or testing on it, except that the pattern just about covers a silhouette at 25 yards from my Mossberg 500. The ammo's advertised muzzle velocity is 1600 fps, compared to 1300 fps of most other ammo, but I take you at your word that 1600 fps is probably an optimistic figure. Anyway, just for the sake of curiosity, I wonder if you would consider doing some testing on it. It's expensive, even at 60 cents a round, but I wouldn't mind sending you a few boxes for testing.

Arie, I hear the same thing. 8-pellet for us was a game changer compared to the previous Winchester buck load. With a modified choke we get satisfactory performance on a target out to 40 yards and beyond. Different ethical standard vs hunting but the 8-pellet would cert@inly ruin a felon’s day out that far.

Many of our students had watched movies which gave an unrealistic representation of pattern spread. A rule of thumb, so to speak, was that a pattern of buckshot when fired through a cylinder choked barrel would spread ~ 1 inch per yard of travel. There have been advances in shotshell technology since then with, for example, Federal Premium that will shoot tighter patterns than had been achieved before, but that improvement begins to be seen at longer ranges of ~ 20 yards and beyond.

Thanks for the video. I've shot the low recoil version of this ammunition in defensive shotguns. I've always assumed this ammunition was developed mostly to reduce the number of stray pellets in self-defense or law enforcement situations. The idea of using them for deer hunting is interesting, and this test suggests that the higher power version would work. Your tests suggest that the range wouldn't change that much.

I love the Federal Flight Control ammo. I kinda wish that you hadn't switched to a full choke. This ammo is SPECIFICALLY made for cylinder bore. Any type of choke restriction, simply tears the wad off of the shot, as it travels thru the choke. I've watched some slow motion testing of this load. If shot with a cylinder bore, the buckshot doesn't start releasing from the wad, until it has traveled 8-10 yards down range. I've also tested this, and other buckshot extensively, thru different chokes. The Flight Control ammo ALWAYS performs the best, with a cylinder bore. ALWAYS! Maybe a part 2, using ONLY cylinder bore? THAT, would be the TRUE test, with this ammo. Of course, I'm shooting thru a cylinder bore(screw in choke), with a field barrel(28"). Barrel length could possibly make a difference, with cylinder bore. Thx, Paul...

As I watch the video I have to admit, that Federal buckshot is a little bit inconsistent, however I still stick by my original claim for centerfire handgun ammo -as it's always very close to advertised velocity with low extreme deviations and has decent working hollow points and accurate target ammo.

And while i'm here mentioning this, I just remembered that Federal makes some really good primers for hand loading too. They are a tad soft so they do sometimes falsely represent an over-pressuring sign when fired as they will flatten into the whole primer pocket, but they perform quite well, seat real well and all of that.

It always confounded me that in NC, the DNR mandated the use of shot when deer hunting in many eastern counties given how much more effective slugs prove to be over buck shot at typical range found so far outside urban populated areas. For those that do favor utilizing buck shot for deer hunting, I'll appreciate your take on the subject. Stay warm and be safe out there.

The best long range shotgun groups I've seen were done at 80 yards with an extremely tight choke, very long barrel, and 0000 buckshot. Many years ago there was a youtube competition for tightest buckshot pattern at 80 yards, and that setup seemed to rule supreme. It didn't need magic wads.

Most shotguns have non adjustable beads so the point of aim is different for each. With the Model 11 in this video it is very well centered with most ammo, but the federal patterned a little high. I ended up having to shoot at the bottom of the chest cavity.

I recently became a big fan of this buckshot. Where I'm from you aren't allowed to hunt deer with buckshot, though. I have, however, found it to be devastatingly effective for hunting Cormorant. The Federal buckshot holds a pretty good pattern even at comparatively long distances and the #4 shot gives you the penetration and shock power necessary to shoot down these relatively tough birds.
