100% agree with you. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a NACDL (National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyer) conference in 2018. He was very genuine and spoke at length about the need for effective re entry programs in prison.

This was incredible. I know that the State and the defendant are adversarial by nature, but it makes so much sense for the person about to go to prison to reach out to the State and begin to start paying your debt to society after a guilty verdict. At that point it seems like if you're genuine, it can only help you.

The main problem I see with this judge and his approach to sentencing is the EXPECTATION that a defendant in front of him/her has to have very significant communication, presentation and Socratic skills, in order to help themselves. Many defendants do not have these qualities and abilities. And it is obvious that they will be PUNISHED for that. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
