In this video coach Simon breaks down some of the main differences between the Roger Federer and Pate Sampras serves.
Two of the biggest differences are:
1. Sampras stretches the left side of his body much more than Federer in the trophy position, Federer is much straighter in that position
2. Sampras uses more of a snap finish with his elbow bending very quickly after contact whereas Federer has a much more extended arm on the follow through
Sampras also rotates a little more in the trophy position.

All technical aspects aside, Sampras was a beast with his serve when it counted. When he was down breakpoint, 15:30 or 0:30. He frustrated the hell out of his opponents with his serve like probably no one else.

Pistol Pete was not only the most efficient server of all time , but also the most aesthetically pleasing to watch. Boris Becker was saying in an interview that Pete would not lose his serve for weeks in a row, putting immense pressure on his opponents because they would always be behind trying to stay in the sets. Sampras serve is far better, the final snap with the elbow bent shows that he respects all the kinetic chain from the feet to the wrist. Federer finishes with the straight arm and does the snap only with the wrist, this meaning he skips at least one step in the kinetic chain, the elbow

Nice video, and good analysis. There is one important thing I would add which I have written about for over 10 years in articles and on forums but for some reason is often not mentioned or missed. However, it is one of the most important aspects of Sampras' delivery and precision. Sampras stood very close to the centre line on the ad court and fairly close to the centre line on the deuce court, in fact far closer than nearly all players today. This is why Sampras needed more rotation than others. However, this is the key reason Sampras was able to swing the serve down the middle (T) on the court with slice and topspin and thus have more disguise there, on the 2nd serve in particular. Andrew Castle once described the motion as a "quiver" and that makes total sense if you think about it. The serves often hitting the line and heading straight for the Centre Line Judge. In the video the chap tries to copy Sampras' serve but on the deuce court is too far from the centre line, more in keeping with modern players. Sampras, Becker, Ivanisevic, Krajicek and Rafter stood closer. That might suggest the serve was taught differently or it was more advisable to learn that way if you wanted to volley a lot. I also believe on the ad court, Sampras' serve out wide to the backhand (for a right hander) had an inside out motion, getting sidespin on the ball, I don't think many top players bar a few have that technique. Serena Williams does take the racquet down to the ground and then load into the motion, but as the chap said, more players would use the Roger Federer motion because it is certainly simpler to imitate. Both profoundly good servers.

Old saying in tennis, "You're only as good as your second serve". I've never seen a better second serve than Sampras's, with frequent second serve aces. Another thing he did better than anyone else, was disguising the direction. So many of his opponents said it was the most frustrating thing about his serve, that they could never tell where he was going to place it.

Great serve comparison video. However, just a thought, and that is the Sampras serve is predicated on his serve and volley game (and as you correctly point out, his serve takes him well into the court) and 3 more steps brings him to the T junction for his first set up volley. To my mind Federer's serve is slightly more neutral in the sense that he can stay back on the baseline/and or approach the net, should he choose to serve and volley. Apart from that - the commonalities between the Sampras and Federer serve have been made abundantly clear by your excellent video.

The main difference was the purpose of the serve. Sampras' whole body movement, from the hips to the angled shoulders to the snap, was made for power. Pronation with a racket that heavy would tire even a beast like Sampras; he uses the snap, which is the shortest movement possible to hit the ball effectively. Federer uses the serve as a tactic. Racket and string technology made return of serve more common, so Roger uses a lot of different grips and effects to place the ball inside or outside of the court. Pronation is btw the modern way to serve, not the traditional way. Both players have a real weapon of a serve. Nice imitations btw!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
Sampras uses pronation 100%. He did, however, use a "snap" of the elbow, his elbow stayed up considerably high after contact and he snapped the arm maintaining that high elbow while the arm bent. However he also used full pronation whilst doing that motion. Thanks for watching. Are there any videos you'd like to see from us in the near future? Simon

Note on your attempt on Federer service: you take your eyes off the ball on the last second so the head weight pulls you to the left when you land. Roger keeps his eyes a bit longer so his balance doesn't change and he follows his shot direction. You can notice because your left arm stretches to the left as you fall to catch your weight and Roger keeps his arm close to his body since his weight pulls forward in the fall.Anyway really good video! Thank you

Sampras is sometimes quoted as having said that he owed much of his success to the fact that he had the "best second serve in the game," and I have seen data on the phenomenal spin rates he achieved, which stood out similarly to how Rafa Nadal's TS spin rates exceed others'. At some point I came to the conclusion that something in the more vertical elbow (and racket) path that caused the famous "Sampras snap" is what produced so much spin on his serve. Now, if only I could!

Federer is no way as good a volleyer as Sampras. I remember a great Aussie player saying how he couldn't believe that a no.1 player in the world could have such a terrible volley. Fed himself knew it, and hired Edberg to work on his volley, and improved somewhat. Sampras's volley was natural, and he executed it beautifully. As also mentioned in another comment here, his running forehand and slam dunk remain unmatched.

Sampras vs. Federer: • Sampras thrusted his hip forward before his body is leading into the court for rushing the net. Fed stayed back • Sampras finished with high elbow because he held the racket with a very loose grip - his arm is like spaghetti whip. Fed had more muscle tension on the arm and finished with a more straight arm • Sampras shown his back to his opponent more than Fed - open his chest with the racket arm more. Ended up with faster racket speed after a longer travel path.

great demo of both serves simon! fed must have dynamite in his quads - never seen such explosive leg drive in tennis serve (dolgi's serve being close though). pete's extreme angular momentum on serve with very little drive component requires a most diligent & strenuous practice, without which such serves might go all over the place - the proof being sampras' service games in iptl a couple of months ago. your thoughts?

Great effort in replicating both serve motions Simon. Interesting to note that Federer's fastest official recorded serve is 140 mph and Sampras I think is in the mid to high 130's. However I did hear rumours in the 90's that Sampras could crank his serve up to 150 mph in practise but no idea if this is true or not. Interesting to note that Sampras doesn't use his back leg for power nearly as much as Federer. He seems to be use his trunk, hip extension, twist rotation and incredible shoulder and thoracic flexibility to develope range and power. You do wonder if Sampras could of got even more pace on his serve if he used his back leg and hip to get even more explosive power. Great video Simon!
@hehehehehahahaha2025
@hehehehehahahaha2025 5 жыл бұрын
The radars were different in the 90s. As far as i remember, they used to measure the serve speed as the ball approached the net, whereas since the 2000s the speed is measured right as the ball leaves off the racket. A 125 mph serve in the 90s is said to equal something in the early 140s today, and Sampras was consistently serving in the mid 120s throughout the 90s. His 136 mph serve was measured with the new radars at the end of his career, after countless of injuries, and his serve wasn't quite as fast as in the 90s. About the use of his back leg: i think the reason he was able to utilize his hip so well was precisely because of the weight shift onto the front leg. Just my speculation, but i think using both legs would have taken more of his hip out of the equation. Which produces more power? Not sure, but I think the way he leaned into the court also somewhat contributed to how he was able to angle himself for more topspin, even on 1st serves. And that spin is what made it a monster serve.
@grantdelmege2724
@grantdelmege2724 5 жыл бұрын
@@hehehehehahahaha2025 very interesting, didn't know that re: radar guns. Yeah that would explain why Sampras didn't officially record a 140+ serve in his career. With his motion and flexibility, he should easily beable to crank his serve up to 140/145 mph. Well if you listen to Dr Mark Kovacs who's one of the worlds leading bio mechanists, he says virtually all of the serve power comes from the back hip and leg. Lots of conflicting advice out there re where power comes from on the serve. But I think it is a combination of twist rotation, a steep verticle angle of the body aligned 'up' and using the back leg and hip effectively.

Great job. You made it clear why Pete got more power than Roger, but Roger's serve may be easier on the body. I also read that Pete contacted the ball with 20 degrees more topspin than anyone else, which allowed him to be more offensive with his second serve. The serve was being pulled down into the court by all that topspin, so it was less likely to be go long.

Hey Simon, in the slow motion vids of Sampras' serve you can see him loosen and retighten certain fingers in his grip as he gets to the trophy position - in some it's his little finger, in others it's his index finger, do you think that's just a tick, or he is actually changing his grip slightly? He wouldn't be changing the grip very slightly - possibly sub-consciously - depending on the intended serve direction/spin would he? Helping hit the different serves from the same toss?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a grip change but more relaxation. I've read somewhere that one of his coaches, either Annacone or Tim Gullikson would make him hit serves using different fingers to feel the impact each one had. When you grip the racket tightly, you get tight muscles. When you relax the fingers and take them off the grip as Sampras does, you relax those muscles and relaxed muscles fire better

In your professional opinion, which one is better for minimizing potential injuries? I've tried that Sampras' finish, aka the holding the dirt diaper finish as described by Jeff Salzenstein. But if my toss or timing is slightly off, then I ended up with elbow problem. As for the hip, would that cause a lower hip or back issue if the timing is off, especially with match situation?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

FYProduction From my experience, somewhere in the middle of best works best. I think the Sampras snap works great if you have shoulders like Pete, for the rest of us that isn't ideal, but the straight arm finish (Federer) puts a lot of strain on the shoulder also so I like to teach bending the elbow but in a very relaxed way. As for the hips in court, when I do it, I feel it in my back afterwards, however it is a great source of power and if you are flexible and do your physical training it will work

I've always tweaked my serve and experimented with different motions. I tried both Federer's and Sampras' style, but also Roddick's, a fast pinpoint motion and a few other styles. Eventually, I found that Sampras' hip loading style along with a fast motion gave me the most pop and felt the best on my body. Some styles I could really crank up the power but I'd end up injured from the motion. Federer's I liked also but found that I get more power when I use the Sampras style of hip loading. Thank you for watching! Are there any videos you'd like to see from us in the near future? All the best Simon

Good video. Sorry if this has been asked before but do you perform the pronation in Sampras' serve consciously or is it an automatic result of the way you use the upper body/hips etc? I've heard coaches say different things; some say you lose power if you consciously try to pronate, while others say you'll mistime the pronation if you let your arm come through completely loose and relaxed.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
Pronation should be mastered so that you never have to actually think about it when serving in a match. For most club players you need to isolate supination/pronation and drill it until it becomes second nature. Thanks for watching. All the best Simon

Simon, Do you see a difference in their grips as well? I think Federer uses a grip that's close to yours, where the index knuckle and the heel pad are both on bevel 1. Sampras seems to be using a slightly different grip, which I think that Nadal, Kyrgios, and probably others also appear to be using. That grip aligns the knuckles more closely with the long axis of the grip, so that index knuckle is on the #1 bevel, but the heel pad is on or closer to the #0 bevel. I think this grip enables a bit of topspin even on mostly flat or slice serves. Do you also see that, and what do you think of this grip?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

Federer spreads his fingers much more than Sampras. Pistol Pete tends to hold the racket more like a hammer, but he does modify his grip on 1st vs 2nd serves. More extreme on the 2nd for sure

Thanks for sharing. Great video. Two of the three best serves of all time, in my opinion. I use these two serves, and Pancho's, as my references when teaching the serve. Although, you also ultimately obviously need to follow the unique rhythms, body dynamics, and personality of each individual student. Cheers, mate, and thanks again!

So what do you prefer, the Sampras snap or the more straight arm finish like Fed? How about more leg drive vs more coil/hip, what works better for you? On another note, why you reckon most pros these days prefer the pinpoint rather than platform stance?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 9 жыл бұрын
pr4nk5tr I prefer the Sampras snap but it's much harder to do and master, however when I got the hang of it, it seemed to be easier to hit different spots on the court,The pinpoint has been more popular with pros for a while now due to the extra power you get but Federer and Djokovic seem to be doing very well with the platform. I think for second serve's the platform performs better

+Top Tennis Training - #1 in Online Tennis After copying their serves, did you realize any differences between them (speed, trajectory, spin, how it felt in contact, etc.)? which serve is more effortless and efficient? which serve is more effective (placement and power)? overall, which serve would you recommend (regardless of difficulty)? Also, you forgot to answer the answer the question about leg drive and hip rotation :) Your videos are very helpful. I really appreciate your work.

Both great serve motions. Pete's was the more potent serve - however, while in no way diminishing the hard work he put into it, he was also born to be a great server, and has tremendous natural gifts. There are elements of his serve to incorporate into ours, but copying it is ill-advised in my opinion. Federer has worked hard to get his serve to be 90% as good as Pete's. I actually think for us mere mortals the best serve to copy is Federer's early years serve (maybe 2004 or 2005). It wasn't as good a serve, but it was a more fluid, languid motion and provided a foundation for what he could do later on.

It depends on how much leg drive you can get with Federer's style. Sampras got inside the court much more because he used the hips over the baseline action that pulled him into the court

The Fed style is more taxing on the legs as you need that explosive energy from the leg muscles. The Sampras style is more taxing on the lower back and hips as they need to stretch prior to the extension

The angle of Sampras' tossing arm seems to be different as well. It's more pointed forward and doesn't go as far back as Federer's. I never completely understood how you can hit your serve well when you hold your tossing arm completely straight up in a 180 degree angle like some players do.
