he knew how light would behave.. he knew human's expression and movement.. he knew how camera would capture the combination of it... all he had to do was orchastrated those elements, and made his picture such a beautiful poetry...

Cinema without Fellini is like music without Bach. His movie lets life smear into the heart.

All Fellini’s Films are interesting and worthy of examination but to me Satyricon amazes me the most! An incredible journey into the PreChristian Roman past which resembles the present. Human nature hasn’t changed that much. A Decadent Journey and sometimes depraved but never dull or boring. It will sweep you away! And will change you. That’s powerful Art! The scenes flow like Theatre all in a continuous motion which makes me wonder how did he do this? A trip into the Id and the Dark Subconscious. Like a Waking dream or nightmare. Take your pick! I watched it transfixed and hypnotized by the Images and the Journey the two young men were on. I kept wondering? Where is this going and how does this end? I was Stunned and shocked at times and completely enveloped into another world from the not too distant Roman past. Amazing! My main criteria for any Art is that it should move you and resonate with you in some way. It definitely did that! You will not be the same person after you experience Fellini’s Satyricon. A Master Filmmaker!

We watched Fellini's Satyricon in Latin class, an though everyone else found it very disturbing and weird, I thought it was very interesting from a visual point of view. I can recommend it especially for artists who need some inspiration!

Truly one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century... he belongs in the absolute highest sphere - along with, imo, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Bergman & Welles. And Giulietta Masina is my favorite actress, no doubt. Great analysis! _8 1/2_ is perhaps the greatest of all films... PS. Thank you for giving _Juliet Of The Spirits_ its proper due 🙏🏼 It's still underrated, imo!

Fellini in going from the Poetic Realism Scorsese mentions here to a more abstract, spare and stylised expression; reminds me of some of the greatest composers: Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky; even Giuseppe Verdi. (there are too many to mention!!) They all started by using lots of tonal/orchestral colours and over time found that they could more clearly express what they wanted with less; with smaller forces. The difference between Britten's Peter Grimes in 1945, and Death in Venice from 1973, are striking. Grimes is lush and rich, whereas Death in Venice is much more sparing in its use of the orchestra, flirts much more with atonality, and focuses on the absolute essentials. They are both masterpieces; the work of one of the great musical geniuses of the 20th century. I just find the parallels fascinating; many artists have gone through this: painters, poets and film-makers. A striving for clarity through simplicity; focusing on the elements which are at the absolute core of what wants to be achieved, voiced, expressed, and cutting away the fat; the superfluous. I think that a good synonym which tome is even better than abstraction, is "distillation"; distilling the contents down to the absolute essentials. A reaching for abstraction is, I think a very logical step, but it is often met with bewilderment by an audience used to mainstream Hollywood, cheap novellas, IKEA posters and pop-music.
