I don’t like roman numerals, but it annoys me when they use IIII instead of IV. Most watchmaker do this, so its not a dumb spelling error. But why?

Watchmakers often use "IIII" instead of "IV" for the number four on a Roman numeral dial primarily because of aesthetic reasons; using "IIII" creates a more visually balanced layout on the watch face, particularly when paired with the "VIII" at the opposite position, and provides a more symmetrical appearance across the dial.

In my eyes the Breguet Marine 5817 is the only real alternative to a Aquanaut. And I think an even better. If you ignore the hype and just compare the watch and the handmande part the Breguet wins in every way. Only the lack of a real in house movement is where Patek has the edge.

Breguet Marine 3400ba would be my choice for an old money watch. Absolutely love them and will add one to my collection one day as they’re very good value.

I also think old money needs to be simple and not ridiculously expensive. One side of my family are old money and they buy everything second hand and don’t go crazy with their spending. Charity shops and auctions are their go to for buying everything. The 3400ba can be had for around $5k in solid gold which I think is a bargain. Would love that to be my next watch.
