Heard him live with Dizzy @ York College, maybe '76. Dizzy introduced him as the only African member of the band...ha! Dizzy was an incredible showman personality, but never compromise the music at all. Band was tight, swingin', & funky when they wanted to be... one of 1st jazz shows i attended. Earl May playing electric, & Micky Roker on drums. Al was smooth, playing lyrically with ease, all about the music. I wouldn't say this was better than Benson though, as he had that Warner Bros. production going for him, on top of his deeply soulful fluid clean playing, surrounded by musicians like Stanley Banks, Ronnie Foster & Harvey Mason, who specialized in smooth jazz & funk style grooves, also Claus Ogerman string arrangements. Kenny Barron's solo was great on Al's version though. He & Cedar Walton had a great touch on Fender Rhodes. And I think Al Foster became a lot more comfortable with funk groove playing a few years later, as he was the drummer with Miles band upon his return.

Can't find much info on the Web about Al Gaffa. He played with Gillespie and Jobim that's all I know. Love his style though
