I feel what's missing in today's Club and Music scene can be found here in a video which shows some great music, a fire breathing drumming machine in Gene Krupa who can even get a tune out of boiler pipes let alone his magnificent, natural gift of timing. There is the example of Class., as shown in a Elegant, Attractive Singer, a Class Band with many, many talented musicians all dressed very smartly. A audience who is also elegantly dressed, both Ladies & Gentlemen, polite and appreciative of the music played. I was born in 1948 but watched many B Grade Movies of the Big Band Era as a kid and while I understand the cost and complex problems with staging Big Band Concerts today I feel very fortunate om Australia.we still have these examples of such a Era, Classy stuff at it's best. Cheers All, from Australia, Denis.

Myself I listen to anything and everything but prefer Blues if anything. The Big Band era was just great in the music it produced that will still get played somewhere, at sometime by someone. You could say the same about 1960's Music as people will still listen to that in another 100 years. I Thank you for your comment and hope that you stay Healthy & Happy in these pandemic times. Growing up in the sixties it was funny that in discussions on music my grandparents would tell me matter of fact Gene Krupa was the best. Even playing guitar in a band I only knew I couldn't play drums but didn't fully understand what made them great. Seeing explanations and breaking it down I have a new respect. Also it seems the best drummers in rock were inspired by jazz drummers. Lately I find myself listening closer to drums and being amazed at some players.

I'm reading a book "Beast" about John Bonham, it says there young John was blown away when he saw in the cinema the part where Gene Krupa plays on steam pipes. Ever since Gene and Buddy Rich were his heroes.

Gene Krupa was to drummers what Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix were to rock guitarists - a big agent of change (for the better). He was given credit for inventing the modern drum kit. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Krupa. He was in his mid 20's when he played the drums on Benny Goodman's version of "Sing, Sing, Sing". He's ten years older in this movie, which was released two years before I was born. I remember seeing him on TV occasionally when I was a kid. There are young drummers today, each much younger than my trench coat, who have heard of Gene Krupa, despite the intervening years of Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Butch Trucks, Neil Peart, Phil Collins, Dave Grohl - whoever you'd care to name. I kinda liked my toms a little thuddier and less pongy, but whatever it is he does, I cannot do it! No autotune here, no drum machines, even if it's a studio recording inserted into a movie set. The man is a demigod!

Something similar really happened...at the Essex House in New York in 1932. Richard Himber, the up and coming society bandleader, told management that NBC wanted to broadcast him and offered to play there. They said sure...but until we know how you will do, you won't play in our main dining room. The band, and NBC's mic, ended up in a large storeroom full of busted up furniture. And from there, Himber broadcast with some of the best musicians in the country...and made such a hit that the Essex House was happy to let him play their main room.
