I have heard from people who say they have traps in areas with heavy insect populations such that almost all traps are sprung most of the time, and they say their traps do well. I don't have experience, but I do know from other hobbies that people often make unfounded claims that are taken as truth.

Just don't make the mistake alot of people do with feeding their VTs. Use live insects as the constant moving around the insect does after the trap closes continues to trigger the trap. If you feed it dead insects and trigger the trap yourself you risk the trap thinking it was a false trigger and opening up too soon without digesting the insect.

All you need to do is massage the trap for about 40 seconds after the trap closes to trigger the digestive process

If it doesn't have access to live insects and i have to feed it dead ones i grab a tall piece of grass clip one of the ends at an angle then stimulate the hairs manually by putting it through the "teeth"

You should use tweezers to put the fly in so it doesn't go out and you feed it and you don't agitate it when it goes out. And rip the wings off so that in case it doesn't fly off or bounce off.

This is so cool! I have a small one at home and I'm keeping it well but I don't truly know how to give it better growing room/environment. We make sure it gets sunlight and water but I have about 8 traps now, all on super long stems, but still in a small plastic cup. I bought it from lowes a while ago and it's still going strong, and I've grown quite attached to it. It's the one type of plant we didn't cover in high school horticulture..

How do you get the mouths to be so red???? My b52s showed up with mouths like that but died during shipping. The new leaves that grew got to be the same size but not as red. 6-10hrs of sun/or uv light a day. Feeding 2 traps every 2 weeks. Distilled water in a tray and i water them when the sphagnum looks a little dry. Any tips?

I keep flys myself and have read a bit about them and several times, books on care specifically say _not_ to do this. They usually say that at no time should all of a flytrap's traps be triggered, with food or empty. It's supposedly bad for the plant because the plant requires a mix of various states of digestion at any given time and it's too much of a strain.

How did you have that many flies around even in summer I dont have that many naturally in my house hahaha. Also should the plants always be sitting on water like that? I have a device to measure soil moisture and it is always in the recommended level for the fly traps down the middle not to wet not too dry but I place it in water like that every 3 or 4 days and the moss soaks up the water within a minute or 2 so there is none on the tray

They suck it dry pretty much. Looks like a flat raisin afterwards. They absorb all the nutrients and protein for them :) You can take the body out later.

I bought a Venus fly trap but every time it ate something, it's heads would die (like not even just the one eating but like the ones next to it too) and then eventually the whole plant died and I couldn't resuscitate it. Any ideas as to why?
