So for the question of cutting up insects I find it beneficial especially for smaller species with less powerful mandibles. However you can usually get away with feeding whole insects to larger species for example my pogonomyrmex have no problem with whole crickets. It also depends how thick the exoskeleton of the feeder insect is (crickets will be easier for the ants than mealworms. Overall I would recommend cutting up feeder so that none of the feeder goes to waste and so that I know the ants can easily access the feeder.
