The USA may be one of the richest and most dynamic economies in the world, but one in six Americans receive help with their grocery bills in the form of food stamps, funded by the federal government. Economics Editor Faisal Islam reports.

My younger sister is 54 years old. She has a University degree and has been an accountant for most of her adult Life. Well, at age 48 she became extremely ill with Hepatitis C. While on the "Transplant List" she was SO sick she could hardly use the bathroom without help. So, from College to her illness she made about $50K to $75K as a CPA and now she is on Welfare (Disability) and Food Stamps. She worked hard, paid a lot of taxes and now she is barely hanging on to Life following a successful Liver Treatment last year. Why should she be JUDGED for using her Food Stamps? We shouldn't judge any of those less fortunate than ourselves. How would YOU like to depend on the Government for your next meal?? Judge Not, lest Ye be Judged. There but for the Grace of God go I...

People don't like to see others get something for nothing. They are too jealous to realize most people with health issues and disabilities would trade anything to be healthy and not need government assistance. I'm just glad it exists because you never no what can happen tomorrow. I'm praying for your sister.

+randy109 I understand disability. What angers taxpayers are people gaming the system or people that take welfare then do nothing to better themselves or their earning potential. There is way too much of that going on.

+randy109 Sorry to hear about your sister but keep in mind some people need welfare and some are just bums. I know a woman who has been and welfare for over 10 years now has 2 kids with 2 diff dads, has made no attempt to find a job and better her situation, she would rather drink wine at the bars. and yet tax payers are forced to pay for this. it is welfare bums that give the people who really need it a bad name

But unfortunately in a capitalist society it's not always the case. Right now over 78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and one emergency away from being homeless. A lot of people, even most of my relatives, must rely on government assistance just to get by. Now that's sad.

Alot of these people on SNAP already work full time for shit wages. How bout instead of looking to blame the individuals on food stamps, we instead look at the far greater issue of stagnant wages? Of course I don't expect most people to do that, it's far easier to blame the poor than examine the deep structural issue we have in this country that causes tens of millions of Americans to use food stamp.

I get SNAP (I refuse to call it "food stamps") in the amount of $192 a month. That works out to only $48 a week for food, even less when there are five weeks in a month. I literally can't afford meat or chicken or fish with that amount, so I decided to go vegetarian. I'm a diabetic so I can't buy cheap carby food. All I buy is eggs, spring mix, veggies, strawberries and a few pantry staples. You CAN eat healthy using SNAP. And I don't feel the least bit ashamed for having SNAP, either. I paid my taxes for 30 years so I'm getting back what was MINE to begin with.

As I read the comments that condemn food stamp users, my heart grows heavy. We're all aware that there is a small portion of the population that abuses the program. This is called the 'cost of doing business;. A nation is responsible for their poor. Without food death is soon to follow. This is not acceptable to me. I'd rather my tax contributions go to feed the hungry than to pay for wars and crooked governments. Judge not, least thee be judged. A very famous man spoke those words when he walked the earth.

In 2015 when I did our taxes, we made $115,000. my husband was laid off because the company was bought by another company. He was 56 and couldn't find a job in 2015 or 2016 that paid what he made at his old job. Unemployment ran out, no health insurance and we applied for SNAP. We get $283. a month. I used to spend that much on eating out a month. We buy meat mostly and some fresh veg then go to a pantry to fill out the rest of the meals with potatoes, canned stuff and sometimes bread. Meat is important as well as the almond milk I drink, lactose intolerant. I've returned to making from scratch and actually eat better than I did when I ate out. Go figure. It's the humiliation of using them. If we didn't need them, I would say give them to someone who needs them. Now, I'm the someone who needs them.

Food stamps are a great help. I don't get $200.00 a month but what I do get I'm greateful for them. I still have to shop for groceies so by the the time stamps come in, my shopping is done. The stamps go for milk, bread, vegetables and articles I need until I get my check. Thereare people who sell their stamps immediatly when they get them. These are the people who need to be moinitered not people who buy food with them. One thing about Food Stamps is they should take into consideration, the elderly, people with medical conditions such as diabetics, cancer patients. Food stamps keep a lot of people from going hungry. So what if a mother buys her kid an ice cream. Does anyonr know how many people sell food stamps to buy drug?

I'm in the US, retired to a rural area of the country. There is a sharp divide between four classes of people where I live. There are university and medical professional workers who would never look down on somebody using SNAP benefits. There are the skilled trade workers who do look down on them, and I've heard some pretty bad diatribes in grocery store lines. There are the working poor who are on some level of SNAP, and some level of disabled and seniors who qualify for SNAP because of their income, then there are those who are chronically unemployed and are professionally on welfare, for Section 8, food stamps, and AFDC. I'd say that 99% of the people in my area who are receiving any benefits are white. There are no manufacturing jobs in this area. Ranching is big, but you have to own the land to be successful at it. There are many business people who prey on everybody else, but I've never heard any complain about SNAP recipients. There's just nothing here to build an economy on unless somebody else is paying for it. That's the sad truth about the state of the union.

Not everyone in this massive country will, or ever will have high-paying jobs, that's not reality. Before the Recession my 60 year old husband made a good living till his company split the state in 2008. Then we went bankrupt then lost our house in 2012. I had to go on Food Stamps for the first time in my adult life at age 52 in 2010. When I went to apply I expected to see a room full of really destitute looking people in tattered clothing but everyone in there looked like me. All ex-middle class folks who never thought in their wildest dreams they'd be on assistance. I used the EBT card for 1 year then stopped then switched to recycling money and change to buy groceries. EBT was nice to have temporarily but not forever. I couldn't take that. My husband finally found work this year (2015) after seven years of searching (50% pay cut) so now we're digging ourselves out w/$4OK in debt to still pay off. That's the new economy.

+hoover lee Recycling money = money (not a lot) you get for taking empty plastic water bottles and soda cans to the recycling centers all over town. I was digging plastic bottles and aluminum soda cans out of the neighbors trash, the gas station trash, basically any trash can I could find with recyclables in it. Buying groceries (and gasoline) with change = using only coins instead of dollars which sux. We had a little cardboard box we would put the coins we got in change and we literally lived off quarters for a couple of years. It's the pits going to the gas station every other day to put $1.00 worth of gas in your car.

+hoover lee I was collecting cans/bottles because there WEREN'T any jobs. I'd rather have been working in an office than digging through the trash. The unemployment rate was 15% in California at the time. The can money was enough to put a gallon of gas in the car, groceries (thank God for Trader Joes). Not a way of living I recommend. I was homeless at 52 after owning homes all my married life and never thought I'd be. I work part time in a surgeon's office (I got the job because I knew someone who knew someone) and I can't believe how many older/elderly patients we have who are homeless.

As an addendum to my prior comment, I'd like to add that people that DO Work and don't make enough to feed their family, then God Bless them. Give them enough to 'fill the gap'. I respect all Labor. Just because I earn triple the minimum wage doesn't mean a person working for the minimum wage doesn't work just as hard, or harder than I do. In the USA today being educated AND willing to work doesn't mean you will ever get that Dream Job. If a person is unable to work then this country is plenty rich to feed them well. We live in a "dog eat dog" capitalist society and musn't forget the "dogs" that are eaten while glorifying the success stories.

If I were given only $200 for food to spend per month or $6.70/day, I could easily make that work. The pre-packaged foods are mostly junk, stay away from them. Buy large packs of lean protein like ham, chicken, or beef, marinate them if needed, freeze them, and make rice dishes, sandwiches, breakfast burritos. Add lots of salad or steamed vegetables as sides. I personally make vegetable/nuts/fruit/protein smoothies to get the nutrient I need regardless of what I'm eating. Bunch of kale or spinach costs $2, get bags of nuts (pricey but lasts months), seeds (cheap and goes a long way), and bananas are only $2 for a whole bunch. Add some protein powder and milk and you've got yourself a super nutritious shake for maybe 50 cents per serving. Being creative and not eating microwave food will not only stretch the food budget but make you healthier and more productive.

Numerous studies by our government and NGOs have shown that food stamps are one of the best ways to get people out of poverty and have numerous other benifits. They act as a trickle up economic stimulus, unlike tax breaks to the wealthy that often are sent to overseas accounts, spent on forign goods, or just saved. With food stamps the majority are spent every month. At this point the money passes to the retail busineses that sold the products, many of which are small businesses. These businesses reinvest the money in more products to replace the ones food stamps bought, improvements to the store and increased employee hours. Many large corperations benefit as well most notably walmart who is one of the biggest advocates for the food stamp program because it is such a large contributing factor to their sucsess. Most food sold here is made in the usa so food product manufacturers also benefit from the program. That food has to be grown by some one and most food on our shelves was grown here so the money trickles to the famers who use it to reinvest in their farms and improve their conditions. Far more money is given out to farms as subsidies than as food stamps. But the rich are the real welfare queens. The govt only charges $5 an acre per year to many mine companies and they can take anything they find. Military hardware is often bought at prices that are ludicrously high becuase of the connections and crooked dealing between government officials and the arms industry. Everyone still remembers when they bailed out the banks with billions of dollars because they were "too big to fail" and then they executives who screwed the pooch and caused a recession gave themselves bonuses. The govt gives out far more handouts to the wealthy and to corperations that made corrupt under the table deals and are screwing the American public to this day. You realize food stamps are good if you actually understand and appreciate capitalism.

I know this video is older but not much seems to have changed. I worked all my life. Single mom, two girls, now in college. Didn't use food stamps. Now I have been declared disabled by my doctors and I am on disability. I can no longer work hard to do it alone and my state will not help me. I do not qualify because I refuse to lie on my application like so many others do. I LITERALLY, LITERALLY eat peanut butter sandwiches twice a day with a glass of chocolate milk. The other meal is usually a different sandwich or cereal. The only problem I have locally with someone on food stamps is when after they pay for their food with the EBT, they pull out an inch thick piece of $100's and pay for the tequila, cigs and 20 more t-bone steaks. That is where the stigma comes from. Oh and they walk out in their brand new shoes to a brand new car. That's what's wrong. The government needs to work smarter and help the right PEOPLE.

Its interesting that large companies like Walmart encourage their employees to get on food stamps. Walmart does not offer a discount on their food to employees. It seems to me that if the Government (the citizens) are asked to make this effort to feed the population- that the major Food companies and large grociers should also bare a little burdon. Instead they are they themselves are making large profits off food stamps. Why would we not make a erminent coupon- a percent by oth large Food ompanies and Large Chain stores? This could be 10% of the total-which would be a big difference on $200.00 a month.

Not to mention veterans and our military. And don't even try to tell me that immigrants get nothing...because a "Latino" woman can come to the US illegally...pop out a baby...have the bill paid by Soonercare...then get WIC...food stamps...low income housing...the kids go to school free...and the whole time the boyfriend or husband is working for cash...and these people are living better than myself and other people in these documentaries. well it would help if the financial and economic system wasn't so geared and pushed by politics to favor major stake holders, mega corporations and the 1% that more jobs with livable wages (and the continuing fight to increase the minimum wage), social, financial and health benefits for the working middle class it would make them more independent of government. There is also this perceived growing culture that people would rather mooch and get free handouts instead of working is over blown -especially with the likes of Fox news and Republican Conservatives pandering to corporations. most of these people would rather be able to have good food, a good paying job instead of having scrounge and eek their way. being poor, living on food stamps is not so easy sailing A lot of these people were lower middle class treading in water and have been made redundant with mounting debt, they are just slowly sinking. It's not that unfeasible either that a lot of posters here on You tube can become homeless or are living like these folks. Heck I lived like that for a while leaning on welfare benefits to support me a few years before things started getting stable and I'm just working contract in IT.

@AdmiralBison
@AdmiralBison 9 жыл бұрын
***** and who is going to regulate the economy? Like I mentioned the financial system is geared towards the rich major stake holders have the power to lobby congress on a whole matter of financial issues. nothing wrong with free flowing currency. it's the basic economic model of the money wheel. it is how it's manipulated that's the issue. no doubt there is a debate about increasing the minimum wage being argued by Democrats but Republicans are against such a proposal, while McDonald's raked in 4 billion in PROFITS the year before - so a lot of the large companies can't plead poverty when it comes to paying the proposed minimum wage increase. Also the United States stands to prosper from refined gas extraction in Alaska, but I doubt the wealth of this will be distributed fairly.

@AdmiralBison
@AdmiralBison 9 жыл бұрын
***** that depends on who is going to regulate it. There is the issue where a lot of big companies are doing a tax loop hole called 'inversion' where they establish their headquarters outside of the country to like for example Ireland (in the case of Apple) as to avoid paying the company tax levels in the United States while still benefiting from being an established US company. there is an estimated $2 trillion dollars in lost money into the US economy with these "foreign" owned companies. Of course they are going to game the system but it is higher then that because it is also a political issue. The current Democrat administration are trying to close this loop hole, but Republicans are adamant on fighting it. D-increasing minimum wage- R- against it D-more government reg. wall st./banks R- claim it is over reach D- push for affordable health care act - R- say it is a socialist movement but do not provide a solution to mounting health care cost for the lower class D- push for more skills for the Science and Mathematics - R- big proponents of privatization of schools and dumbing down Maths and Science

Whatever happens there in the US will eventually be imported here into the UK (or the UK of A if you prefer), so I find this news item quite disturbing since it is a form of social branding. America is one of the richest Countries in the World and yet 50 million people are dependent on food stamps. The point is this - there is absolutely no need for poverty whatsoever. I know of a way to solve the poverty problem. Identify those areas within the jobs market where there are known skill shortages and retrain all unemployed people with all the latest and most needed skills (while paying them a decent living wage at the same time of course). You might ask yourself why politicians don't do that already? Well it's because they would much rather waste taxpayers money propping up tyrannical political regimes in foreign lands or wasting billions of dollars (pounds) trying to conquer the World in the form of unnecessary pointless wars - that is the reason - Corporate Fascist interests come first before the welfare of the people.

The majority of people that are on food stamps are very hard workers! Some of them are working two and three jobs just to make ends meet. Because it's very hard to find full time jobs in some places. That lady is right people do judge people that get food stamps. In my hometown I know of four companies that shut down without giving their employees a notice. One company's employees were told at 8 am that the company is closing for good a 4 pm. Two companies just left a note on their door saying that they were closed for good. Their employees didn't find out until they went to work that day. That they no longer had a job. The last company (a local pharmacy) had been in business for 30 years or more. The owners sold the company to Walgreens. They didn't tell their employees either. These are just a few examples of how people end up needing food stamps. Not everyone is lazy or trying to get over on the system. They need our compassion and understanding not our judgment.

These people aren't the primary beneficiaries, their employers are. Corporations, the elite, are the biggest welfare loafers going. Low wages mean more profits for the company. The usual argument is that Mom&Pop shops can't afford to pay a living wage. Granted. But Multibillion dollar international manufacturers, retailers , and food corporations certainly can. Meanwhile the rest of us foot the bill. And not just for food. Lack of health insurance sends them to emergency rooms. They can't pay, so the middle class does in higher costs. And what are the social costs of latchkey kids left on their own because both parents have to work? We judge the working poor for using EBTs but are outraged at the suggestion that the rich pay their fair share. We have become so warped that we actually believe the problem in America is that the poor have too much money while the rich don't have enough.

the benefits do not offset the costs of daily living and a lot of these people were lower middle class, yes with children schooling , mortgages or rent, bills and loans. Welfare is not glamorous and in no ways a replacement to financial levels needed to support a middle class. When you have a shrinking middle class that is the major driver of the economy of a country start to shrink and is not being support then there is big trouble ahead. As if the Global Financial Crises in 2008 wasn't a sign that a serious look and overhaul of our financial economic situation was required, but the impact of wealth distribution, government management and income disparities will continue. I can wager then anyone of us posting on You tube could become redundant and it wouldn't take long for us to be relying on food stamps, lower health costs, emergency housing or leaning on relatives for support.

The only indefinite benefit is food stamps for families with children. I'm on SSDI for a very severe disabling condition and after I pay for rent, health insurance, utilities, etc. I have less than $100 for food and all other needs. I work very hard to be a productive citizen. I know for a fact I don't have as many groceries in the house as the people I know getting food stamps and welfare. They all the time telling me to join up with them and rape the system like they do. They always inviting me over for dinner.

@jfsfrnd 200 dollars per month means approximately 6 dollars or so a day for food, which is only 180 but tax makes 200. That is enough to eat very well for 1 person, decently for 2 people, and if you really had to stretch it, could make do for 4 or 5 people but it would be rice and other stuff like that at that point so not good. To be blunt 200 dollars a month is not that much money, like 2400 a year, and if you can't earn 2400 dollars more a year somehow... then you probably aren't trying very hard. One part time job will literally make several times that. 5 hours a week will make that much.

the reason why people judge you for buying ice cream at the store is because ice cream is a junk food you don't need and the taxpayer is forced to pay for your junk food. if you are going to buy junk food on EBT the taxpayer has every right to judge you. there are lots of people who are not on welfare have to work their ass off, live paycheck to paycheck and can't rally afford junk food for themselves but are forced to pay for the people on EBT

Pat Studer Most people on food stamps have a job. The problem is minimum wage pays so little that those workers qualify for food stamp assistance. Companies are using the government and taxpayers to supplement the wages of their workers. What I'd like to see is min wage increased so that people who earn that pay no longer qualify for food stamps.

They said Rhode Island is wealthy??? Hahhh. I live an hour from Providence, commute to Boston everyday. The only rich part of Rhode island is South, near Newport (the mansions, the breakers, etc). Providence, the bucket (Pawtucket), Cranston, etc are full of Hispanic minorities that collect welfare that spill into Massachusetts New Bedford, Fall River, Woonsocket. My ancestors lived down there in the 1800s after coming here from England. My great grandfather, who owned an architecture business in Providence, closed up the ship and came up here closer to Boston in the 1950s during the White Flight. If you go to restaurants in Providence, it won't be English being spoken, and the staff will give you a dirty look for not speaking the Guatamalan or Brazilian dialect of Portuguese. The White people who remain there are extremely blue collar. I realize this sounds racist, but I'm not trying to be, this is all factual
