I cannot believe that!! I started at that college back in 1966. Even did the farm and milking schedule. Took Animal Sciences as wanted to be a Vet. Unfortunately life away from home the first time led to too much party time, and found myself being shipped off to Vietnam. Learned my lesson and became a teacher. There was a motel north of town that put 3 students per room. That was my abode while at SUNY Cobleskill.

1977 Cobleskill AnHus Dairy grad here. Hardest degree I got. I was there before the interstate came through, so it was VERY country. I loved it. The creeks and the rolling hills... Be still my heart. I couldn't recognize anything in the video though, I'm sure there's nothing left from 43 years ago. Love the channel - keep it coming!

The farm next to us (has about 1000 milking cows) uses 6 DaLaval milking robots. The cows go get themselves milked whenever they want to get milked. Most seem to go 3 times a day and about a third only go twice. Their system automatically detects any milk issues, or if the cow may be not feeling well, or even coming in heat. They automatically get moved to special pens for breading or to see the vet. The cows with bad milk, still get milked by the robots, but the milk automatically gets routed to calf milk storage where that milk is pasteurized & fed. Great setup, but very expensive. They have same alleyway water flushing, with sand recovery for reuse, and manure digestors which the gas powers the whole farm.

we use a flush system to clean our barns we find that it helps to separate sand better because at the end of our barn there is a flat concrete pad where all the sand settle and then we scoop it up with the loader put it on a pile let it dry out and use that as bedding (we dairy farm in central texas so freezing isn't an issue) in my opinion flushing is good when it works but when it doesn't its a pain also for parlors I prefer parallel with rapid exits

We actually have a flush system in our barn. I find in the warm weather algae grows on the floor and makes it slippery, and when we have water issues it makes for a shitty day literally. I prefer alley scrapers which we have in the new barn.

I am not from Cobleskill; my parents have a place in Cherry Valley, which is not far. I've been to Cobleskill literally dozens and dozens of times! There used to be a great pizza place up the street from you. It has closed and is now called Justine's. Maybe you know the place. Justine's has good Italian food...and reasonable pizza...but it is not as good as the old Randy's Royal Tavern Pizza and Bob's Pizza before it that were in the same location. Keep up the great work.

Just scrape the barn with a skid steer. Milking is done with a 6 head flat parlor. Works nice. On the plus side each stall is individual so if I have a cow that milks slow it doesn't hold up the whole group.

For the calves in the hutches, why don't you guys use a little fence around the hutches? Down here in NC we use hutches but just with a fence around them to protect them from coyotes. I was just wondering how do y'all keep predators away from them?
@nyfarmgirls1707
@nyfarmgirls1707 4 жыл бұрын
I'm really not sure why we do that. Maybe so it's easy access for students who are studying the anatomy of the calf? I would prefer the fence around the hutch, the chains are a pain in the butt. We have not had any issues with predators

I drink mostly raw milk and sometimes when i want hot milk and honey at night, I boil it. I hand milk. It works if you don't have as many cows as you do! Hand milking doesn't have as many things to clean, I think. Your parlor looks so nice and clean. Do you like sandbeds for the cows? How grainy is the sand? Is it like the beach?
