Germany borders many countries so its cuisine has been influenced from outside at various points (for example, Rhineland cuisine is influenced by Belgium). Apfelstrudel, Spätzle and Wiener Schnitzel are eaten in southern Germany, which borders precisely Austria, from which they derive. But they are now so integrated into German culture (in those areas) that tourists go there to eat those dishes. It's like eating in New York, they didn't invent it but they are famous for their pizza!

Sometimes we go to a restaurant near St Louis called Hofbräuhaus and I always get the schnitzel (pork variety) with spätzle and it is so good. I laughed loudly several times during this video which was perfect for Herbert and his "that's what she said" looks at the camera. Especially when the size of sausages was mentioned. lol

Wiener Schnitzel is never served with Sauerkraut, greetings from Austria. Käsekrainer also is Austrian. Käsespätzle is usually done with 2 type of cheeses, one strong hard cheese and one even stronger one. It then is served with fried onion on top!

YB, some of these foods I've eaten in my life, being one of eastern European heritage. Potato pancakes we'll commonly eat during Lent (Catholic/Christian holiday), since we can't have meat on Fridays during it. Sauerkraut we'll usually eat on New Years Day, which is said to bring us luck in the new year.
