FEEDING SELLING REPAIRING AND VACCINATING

January on the dairy farm and calving season is fast approaching. Trying to spend as much time as possible at maintenance and repairing. But this week we also had to vaccinate for lepto as well keep all the animals fed.

another poweful video alan, great to have help. i think a right hand side morris crush gate would suit you. weild on a extension piece to it the full lenght of the crush then weild on handles every few mitres and that leaves you that you can open and close the front gate from anywhere in the crush a great job when you are there on your own.

Still staying busy Alan, just a couple of things or suggestions for you, we here, & I know a lot of other dairy farmers, that no longer feed hay to young calves, as it only puts pot bellies on them, no hay fed here to calves in 25 years, bed them every day, dry clean straw way better for their stomachs, then introduce a little silage, at 8 weeks of age, works very well for us, noticed in other videos of yours, you have alot of good up to date , expensive machinery in your yard, but all outside in all weather, it should be housed somewhere, machinery gets very rough looking & weather beating in a few years, even the new tedder,behind a bush!!!

Hi Derek. I appreciate the feed back. I know what your saying about the hay. I feed straw to the calves for 8 weeks and introduce hay and silage. They eat very little hay. I know I said on the video about feeding them the hay but it was only a figure of speech. The whole calves wouldn’t eat a full bale between them. The hay will be probably ate by last years calves I’d be thinking. And Derek there is nothing I would love more than to have a big machinery shed/workshop on my farm. But unfortunately Rome wasn’t built in a day. I bought land in 2013, upgraded the milking parlour in 2018, done the calf shed and calving pens in 2019, made the farm roadways in 2018. The next project will be a new slatted house this year I hope. Then hopefully I can focus on getting the machinery housed. If the stock and land aren’t kept right then I wouldn’t have much need for the machinery. I had an empty mushroom house rented of a neighbour for a few years there and all was stored there but the neighbour needed it for his own use now. If anyone knows where I’d get the use of a shed or mushroom house in Cavan for reasonable money please let me know.

A right you are, let’s hope 2023 milk price stay’s as good as the year gone by, but milk powder is under pressure, gone to expensive for these far away markets to buy.. Anyway keep up the good work, we’ll keep watching, I don’t know how you have time ,for doin your videos / editing & all that goes with it, anyhow, keep up the good work…
