fyi. oyster shell is not for a chickens crop. It is for the calcium egg laying chickens need. Some say that the get plenty if you only feed them layer feed, but if you also free range, they need a calcium supliment. You can also crush up egg shells and recycle them to your birds. Chickens use small rocks in their crops for grinding their food up. You can purchase special grit "rock" at any feed store.

We have 5 chickens, they lay pretty much 5 eggs a day. They will kill for a meal worm but eat almost anything! They are an absolute joy and sooo easy to look after!

Yes definitely. You can get 'poulets' or 'point-of-lay' chickens which means they are just about to lay eggs but haven't started yet. If you really want friendly birds that are very tame or have personality then get them earlier in life. Mine respond to 'girls' and know that it's feeding time. They also know when i am weeding the garden and wait to eat the salad. My favorites are Rhode Island Reds: quiet, very tame, and numerous large brown eggs. Good luck.

I have heard somewhere to never feed chickens potato or potato peelings, that it could kill them, Is that true ???. Also, do you ever add a bit of vinegar to their water, to keep it from freezing ?. I am unsure of how much, and what type of vinegar to use ?.

i remember my grandpa grinding conch shells to powder and adding them to the chicken feed. never really knew why. i thought it was just to make the hens lay eggs with stronger shells.

Egg yolk is yellow, but when hens are fed, or can eat greens, or carrots, for example, the yolks are darker yellow, or even orange, and taste much richer than the normal store-bought eggs. Buy some free-range or yard eggs, and the normal white eggs in your grocery store and compare.

Grit is not the same as oyster shell. No protein? Veggies are great but brown eggs have yellower yolks anyway

my pet chickens are picky eaters. they don't eat dried cracked corns we bought at the feed store. I think I spoiled them by giving them too much blueberries and breads!

***** I don't even cook my oats, I just pour in a little hot tap water and stir it up, I don't leave hardly any extra water in the dish. By the time I get on my coat, boots and all and walk out to the hen house, it's cooled down to room temp or cooler and it's soft. I check to make sure it's cool enough before giving it to them.
