I use elemental sulphur and DE for everything. To spray chooks and disinfect perches and boxes, I use brown vinegar with a few drops of lavender oil. Brown vinegar was the best before apple cider vinegar became popular. So don't waste your money on it, save it for yourself.

I love the idea of making a door to push the litter out into the wheel barrow… wish i had that yesterday when i did the big spring clean out. Going to show this video to my husband…. Lol. Re: lime and DE, I use First Saturday Lime (i highly recommend) in my chicken’s dust bath along with some food grade DE. Both are a fine powder, so i mix in plenty of soil, etc, thoroughly to keep the DE dust down… . I don’t use either of them inside my coop, but it’s just an 8x8 shed/playhouse converted into a coop and i only have 9 hens, and 2 ducks in there. i have sand boxes under their roosting bars and i use a kitty litter scoop to clean the poop out of those every morning as soon as i let them out. I remove all wet/soiled litter from the Duck’s bungalow. I also don’t keep any food or water in their coop. I’ve been it doing this way for 2 years with good success. No mites, fleas, etc. No odor in the coop after the morning scoop out and letting windows open in warmer weather. Hope someone finds this helpful.😊

We use sand under our chicken perches as well. I scoop it the poop in the morning and add it to my compost. We use pine shavings in the bedding boxes. We don't have odor issues. However, yesterday, I discovered that the outside of my coop was covered in chiggers! I threw DE everywhere and ran to the store to purchase cedar chips to spread in my yard and the run. I don't use cedar in my on a regular basis, but it was an emergency. Hopefully, they will have died overnight!

How do you get your ducks to go in at night?? Mine just wanted to stay in the yard where predators could get them.
@TD-zb8ly
@TD-zb8ly Жыл бұрын
@@annechen103 in the warmer months, they prefer to stay outside all night if I let them but i never let them because we live next to 1000 acres of forest and wildlife management area and it would be too tempting for predators, big and small. In fact, one night I came out to close up the coop and encountered a bobcat who was sniffing around the coop and very unhappy that I interrupted! So, I physically put them into the coop if they didn’t go in on their own but once I got them into that habit, they started going in on their own if I wasn’t out there to put them to bed by the time it started to get dark. So, it comes down to routine and when you do have to force them to go in, you can either pick them up and put them in, or o sometimes just used a large leaf rake and directed them up the ramp and into the coop. Best of luck!

When I use the DE I fill up a plastic jar with a perforated lid or a shaker (like the ones you find in Italian restaurants) or a used parm cheese shaker. You can also find the accordian-style powder spreader. I use this for my plants. It spreads the DE in finer fashion...just don't spread it when the wind is blowing 😮
@joesqudy
@joesqudy Жыл бұрын
Oh and by the way, both lime and DE are both completely safe to use in the garden. You could have too much lime which could ruin the pH of your garden, however it is still very good for your garden. Regarding the DE, if it’s mixed into the soil you’re only going to be killing any hard body insects you don’t want anyway. As far as bees and anything that flies, unless you’re putting it in the air while they’re flying around you’re not going to get them. It doesn’t harm worms, typically if you have water bugs, ants, Beatles (who are soil borne), it’s gonna kill those. Hope this clarifies some of the info. 😃❌⭕️♥️🙏🏽

I used to whitewash my coop ,roosts, floor , and nest boxes at least once a year . The recipe for whitewash is , 5 lbs. hydrated lime and 1 lb. calcium chloride and enough water to make it like paint . Easy to just paint a coat on everything . And I made a dust bath outside with ashes from the wood stove . Hope you find this helpful . I had layers for 30+ years .

Good information. I use DE in the nooks and crannies, BUT I bypass a lot of the need for all this as I clean my coop every day. I have 13 hens, free range and very loved. I find if I take 5, 10 min a day to clean, my hens are healthier, and therefore happier. I think anyone could get mites. Even me, but that's where the DE comes in. An ounce of prevention, y'know. I love that you have posted this for folks who don't clean as often as I do. So glad you're out there, bud.

Thank you!! I just subscribed and look forward to checking out a few more of your video's. This was very informative. We just put our chicks out into their new coop (we are new chick parents), and they seem to really enjoy it. We still have their temporary runner, with wheels, that we can move around, as we complete their run that will be connected to their coop with a cover. We plan on keeping it, in the event one gets sick, or when we adopt a few more lovely little fluffy feather butts. I currently use the DE, as I already had it for a variety of other purposes, and although we have lime that we put in our compost every now'n then (such as when we get an odor). This is a great additional option that I will incorporate into our coop.

Please wear a mask or respirator, and eye protection. DE gets in your lungs and eyes and scratches the surfaces of your eyes, the lining of your trachea, and inside your airways. DE is made of fossilized, crystalline silica and it kills parasites by shredding their hard exoskeleton and they dehydrate and die.

I have a great tip for you for spreading out the DE or lime, for that matter anything that you want to spread in the coop or garden... I use this tip in the garden (I just got my coop so I will be using this in the coop as well). I save my empty spice bottles (which have holes in the top) fill them up with fertilizers, now I’m going to do this with the DE and lime. I sprinkle out in the garden (I will be spreading in the coop now using this method). It saves a lot of time trying to get just the right amount to a location. I hope this made sense.

Barn lime is caustic and a different king of lime. It is hydrated lime and can harm chickens.

I use construction sand. Inert and bugs don't like it. I use been on any pitching surfaces. Just rub it on. Its humid and hot here in tn. So the deep litter doesn't work well. Also in the wet cold winters the stew or chips get wet and stay wet!

Thank you! It’s so nice to find someone else in Texas (we’re close to San Antonio)! 🤠 We just purchased a few acres and will move in two weeks to our little homestead. So as a newbie, I have a couple of questions: I bought my very first chicks this week and I have liked the idea of the deep litter method for composting since we’re big gardeners, but I really have wondered how that would fare for the overall health of my hens? Do you still compost your bedding? Or does using these additives make it completely unusable? Would you mind sharing why you chose not to use deep litter? I’m just gathering all the info I can before it’s time to put the girls into their coop. I’m really enjoying your videos, brother! Thanks for all of the great content!

We use our bedding and add it to the compost pile. We don’t deep litter because it can ruin your coop floor and walls while it decomposes inside. You can’t use it if you have added too much lime because that can rapidly change the ph of your garden. Only use the litter/manure if you have only used the DE. Blessings for your new homestead. So glad you have moved out to the country.

I'd drive to Callahan's in Austin. They'll set you up the right way. You actually can remove the old straw. Then throw the new straw in. Don't mess it up. The chickens will enjoy breaking up the bale. Keep bales dry. Also in SA. You likely can avoid lime and DE. We are so dry. If inside the coop is wet with manure, it is time to clean it. Do put some straw in nest boxes. I also make nest boxes far larger than most people. Twice as big. I found setting hens prefer to hatch in a large box. Also use crushed lime for surfaces instead of dirt.

I have an A frame coop 6'x8' , nesting box on top level, I clean out the bottom twice a week, and move it 2x a month, I put aluminum screen on the inside of the bottom to get rid of flies , and I replace the hay in the top 2x a week, that keeps flies down.

Yes, I am newbie of chicks. My hubby n I started free range birds. Coop was a storage shed at first. I didn't like cleaning it. Smell as it was. Constantly it seemed putting fresh straw or hay. Fed up, my husband & my daughter finally built the coop I invisioned. Placed on concrete pad atop a burnt out nonworking tall freezer. We turned the door side down n built the coop on top of that. Used the deep litter method, once a year cleaning no mites, lice or flies. So nice to enjoy my girls. They not only feed us, but they are so calming to me with their lil chatter.

If someone is having a hard time finding garden/ agricultural lime, or the price has gone through the roof, some cat litter is made with dolomite lime. It's probably at least worth a cost comparison to see what's a better value for you.
